Australia’s last pair adds 65 runs but team falls short by 14 runs, England end Ashes opener jinx

Nottingham, July 14
James Anderson took five wickets to inspire England to a nerve-wracking 14-run victory over Australia on a dramatic final day of the first Ashes test at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

Australia's Brad Haddin and James Pattinson shared a superb last-wicket partnership of 65 to put their team on the verge of an astonishing win.

But Anderson, who dismissed Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc and Peter Siddle in the morning, returned to force Haddin, on 71, to nick a catch through to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

The England fielders celebrated but umpire Aleem Dar did not raise his finger, forcing captain Alastair Cook to call for a review.

Amid unbearable tension, the third official reviewed the incident and, after a lengthy delay, told Dar to give Haddin out, prompting scenes of joy around the ground.

“I'm delighted with the way things went,” man-of-the-match Anderson told a news conference. “We stayed calm even when they were getting closer and closer.

“I wasn't sure (if Haddin hit the ball) to be honest but Matt Prior and Cookie were convinced. “I'm just delighted we could review it and sneak home... I'm lost for words, it's been an amazing five days.”

It was perhaps inevitable that the final act of a gripping and enthralling match would be decided by the Decision Review System which has played such a significant role in the game. England fell foul of it when Jonathan Trott was wrongly given out lbw after an operator failure in the Hot Spot system meant the third umpire was unable to see that he had hit the ball with his bat.

Australia were incensed when Stuart Broad refused to walk after edging the ball to slip but were unable to send the decision to the third umpire because they had used up all their referrals.

“The bottom line with the review system is that you do get more decisions right,” Cook said.

Australia captain Michael Clarke admitted that he must improve they way he uses the system. “I need to get better,” he said. “Unfortunately if I had used my reviews better it would have helped our team.”

No team had ever chased more than 300 to win a Test match at Trent Bridge but Haddin and Agar, who resumed on 174 for six, batted comfortably for 55 minutes until Anderson removed Agar for 14. England had taken the second new ball and the 19-year-old, who made 98 on his debut in the first innings and shared a test record last-wicket partnership of 163 with Phil Hughes, edged a catch to Cook at first slip.

DIVING CATCH

Anderson struck again to dismiss Starc for one, also safely pouched by Cook. The England skipper then dropped a routine catch off Peter Siddle but he soon made amends to Anderson with a superb diving catch to dismiss the Australian fast bowler for 11.

Anderson bowled 13 overs in a row from the Radcliffe Road end before being replaced by Steven Finn who conceded 15 runs off his first over.

Haddin reached his fifty off 115 balls and Pattinson looked increasingly comfortable at the crease. The fast bowler hoisted Graeme Swann over mid-wicket for six and the pair brought up their fifty partnership off just 46 deliveries.

Haddin was nearly run out after being sent back by Pattinson and Finn dropped the Australian wicketkeeper when he was on 64, a very difficult chance on the backward square leg boundary.

England had taken the extra half hour with Australia nine wickets down but in an atmosphere of extreme tension the players had to leave the field for lunch with the match still firmly in the balance.

Australia needed 20 runs at the start of the afternoon session and they eked out another five before Anderson trapped Haddin. — Reuters

Delight disbelief and loads of drama

It has been draining emotionally and physically. I didn't hear anything but Matt Prior and Cookie were convinced. I'm just delighted we could review it and sneak home... I'm lost for words, it's been an amazing five days.
— James Anderson

Credit to England, they fought well. The two best performers in the match were Bell and Anderson and England deserved the win.!
— Michael Clarke

Incredible effort by Haddin and Pattinson but Jimmy showed why he is one of the best.
— G Mcgrath

I still think England will win the series...it would have been better for cricket if Australia won today
— G Boycott

Nothing can prepare you for these kind of days. Alastair Cook reckoned he would be the only kind of captain that does not go bald but I wonder how he's feeling now. — Alec stewart

I always said I would be the only England captain not to go bald in the job but days like today won't help that. — Alastair cook

India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni: Laxman

Kolkata, July 14
Former Test batsman VVS Laxman was today effusive in his praise for India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who lead the national team to back-to-back title triumphs at the Champions Trophy in England and Tri-nation series in the West Indies.

"His records (of winning all the world titles) speak for himself. He has that uniqueness to respond to a tough situation with ease. He does not involve himself much emotionally, and that`s his quality. India are lucky to have a captain like Dhoni," Laxman said.

The 38-year-old batsman, who had announced his retirement from International cricket in August last year, however, refused to draw comparisons between Dhoni and former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

Ravindra Jadeja`s emergence as an allrounder and Shikhar Dhawan`s batting prowess at the top have been two positives for the Indian cricket and Laxman feels it`s Dhoni who should be credited for finding a talent like Jadeja.

"Dhoni backed him well especially using Jadeja as a bowler. He is also a great fielder and a handy batsman. Jadeja has emerged as a great asset to the Indian team and Dhoni should be complemented," he said.

Talking about Dhawan, Laxman said: "I mentored him during his stint at (IPL franchise) Sunrisers Hyderabad. He always had the talent and his change in approach is working well for him." Laxman said India, the defending champions and world number one ODI side, are going in the right direction ahead of the World Cup 2015.

"The manner in which we beat England in England (in the Champions Trophy last month) was really commendable. The youngsters should also be credited for the performance. It`s a side that`s going in the right direction ahead of the World Cup 2015," he said.

Talking about India`s triumph in the recently-concluded Tri-Nation Series in the West Indies, Laxman said: "He once again stayed composed yet on the top of his game. I really appreciate the way he`s instilling confidence among the young players. The credit goes to Dhoni and his team." — PTI

Victorious Indian team returns from WI

The victorious Indian cricketers have started trickling into the country after being on the road for more than a month during which they lifted the ICC Champions Trophy and won the ODI tri-series in the West Indies. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been rested from the upcoming series against Zimbabwe, has taken a break and is on a holiday, reportedly in London.

But some of the travelling players have landed back in the country. "Its nice to be back at home after two months, but bad thing is its difficult to adjust the timing!!," tweeted pacer Ishant Sharma upon his return to the city. Batsman Rohit Sharma, who flourished after being promoted to the opening slot, touched down in Mumbai.

"Touched down in Mumbai finally and such a warm welcome at d airport, really thrilled to see d smile on people's face..fantastic 2 months!," he tweeted.

Mumbai
More wary of confining Gauti, Sehwag to history: Kiran More is wary of dismissing the comeback chances of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. "Competition is a healthy sign for Indian cricket. There is a good healthy competition going on. Whoever performs will be in the team. If somebody is unfit then Gambhir or Sehwag, or (even) Zaheer Khan, can walk in. You need experience also when you go on tough tours. Overall it is looking good and you can fall back on some of the players," More said. Praising the performance of Dhawan and Sharma, More said,"They (Gambhir and Sehwag) have to keep performing in domestic cricket. They need to have the belief. It is a healthy competition. All these players who are playing at the moment could also have a bad phase and some of these guys can come into the team then."
