Bathinda, June 30
For once, the forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department for the Malwa region proved to be true. The region was reeling under severe power shortage after the Lehra Mohabbat and Bathinda thermal plants tripped on Saturday. However, late night thunderstorm followed by a short but heavy rain provided some relief to the city residents. However, it left many areas in the city waterlogged.

The weather changed at around 1.30 am on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. A strong dust storm ensued which was followed by downpour.

The strong winds uprooted several trees along the Mansa, Goniana, Barnala, Dabwali and Bibiwala roads. The fallen trees caused traffic snarls at several roundabouts in the city.

The rain also laid bare the administration's preparedness for the monsoon. Though the downpour lasted only for 20-30 minutes, roads and streets in several low-lying areas of the city were clogged with rainwater till Sunday evening. Areas of the Power House road, Amrik Singh road, Parasram Nagar, Balla Ram Nagar, Kamla Nehru Colony, Prajapat Colony, Green Avenue, Nai Basti, Kothe Amarpura, Dhobi Bazaar and Sirki Bazaar witnessed waterlogging.

Though Saturday night’s weather somersault might have lowered the temperature a little, the IMD predicts the relief is short-lived. Sun shone bright on Sunday morning and maximum relative humidity was recorded at 65 per cent. The maximum temperature was recorded at 40.1 degree Celsius.

As per the forecast for the next four days released by the department today, the maximum temperature is expected to oscillate between 39 and 41 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature is expected to be recorded around 28 degree Celsius.

According to the IMD, the region is likely to experience thunderstorm with rain on Monday. However, the days later are expected to bring no respite from the hot and humid weather. From Tuesday till Thursday, the region is expected to experience partly cloudy sky with a possibility of thunderstorm

Bathinda, June 30
Although the government schools will reopen after summer vacations on July 1, Monday, the children will have an opportunity to make merry till July 4, courtesy the gram panchayat elections.

Close to 5,000 teachers of the elementary and senior secondary schools have been assigned poll duties. While those on poll duty attended rehearsals on June 26 and 29, they have been directed by the administration to pick the material related to the polls by July 2.

All those on poll duty have also been directed to report at their respective polling stations on July 2. After performing their election duties on July 3, those on poll duty will be allowed a holiday the day after (July 4).

Going by the schedule, the teachers will be able to join the schools only on July 5, which happens to be Friday. There are chances that several teachers will take offs on Friday and Saturday to make it an extended weekend and join their duties only by Monday.

Education Dept’s claim

However, officials in the Education Department assured that the absence of close to 65 per cent of the teaching staff will not hamper the classes.

They stated that the teachers who are not on poll duties have been asked to combine two or more sections and take classes to make up for the absence of other teachers.

DGSE directive

Interestingly, the Director General of School Education (DGSE) has directed that the teachers of social science to conduct activities on the occasion of the World Population Day on July 11 and the Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26.

Teacher’s take

“The state government keeps directing the government school teachers to ensure increase in the pass percentage every year. At the same time, it also ensures that the teachers are given poll duties and engaged with other activities or with training camps. This hampers the smooth conduct of classes and the teachers fail to stick to the schedule of covering topics month-wise,” said a teacher on the condition of anonymity.

Novel way of protest against fuel price hike, former Parasram Nagar councillor at it again
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, June 30
A former municipal councillor of Parasram Nagar, Vijay Kumar, today protested against the hike in petrol prices in a unique manner.

Kumar along with some residents of the locality pressed a horse and a cart into ‘service to ferry passengers’. Vijay said there was a time when horse carts were used to ferry passengers. The fare was just 10 paise per passenger from the railway station to Parasram Nagar. “We have a dual objective of sensitising people to the rising fuel prices and mocking at the government’s decision of increasing the prices for yet another time,” Vijay said.

The former MC also made passengers to sit on a mule to demonstrate that it was high time the ancient ways of transportation were brought into use considering the ever rising prices of fuel.

Vijay also pulled a car using a horse to show that it has become quite difficult to use petrol-run vehicles.

He also highlighted the advantages of using ancient means of transportation, stating that one needs no driving licence, registration certificate, insurance or any other documents for the same.

The former councillor said this was for the 18th time that the price of petrol has been hiked ever since the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance took over the reins at the Centre.

Sanjeev Kumar Soni, Anil Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Bikramjit Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Anjani Kumar and Surinder Kumar were among others who had joined the protest against the fuel price hike.

Bathinda, June 30
Taking stringent measures against those who furbish false details to seek exemption from election duty, the district administration has decided to get FIRs registered against government employees whose pleas are based on false grounds.

Nearly 350 employees were found absent during the second rehearsal which was held on June 29.

Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer Kamal Kishore Yadav said that anybody found absent at the final rehearsal, to be held on July 2, would be taken to task. Those who are absent must have a genuine reason, the DC said, and added that people have been devising inappropriate ways and means to seek exemption from duty for Panchayat elections to be held on July 3.

The office of the Deputy Commissioner has been flooded with written applications, verbal requests and recommendations by various political leaders, officials and others to grant exemption to government employees from election duty.

Yadav said a large number of such applications and recommendations have been turned down and only those who
are genuinely unable to perform election duty have been exempted by his office.

The DC said that all the department heads have been told to minutely scrutinise all the applications received to seek exemption from election duty.

"Any supporting document or application found to be based on deception would invite trouble for the erring employees. We have asked that a case be immediately registered in this connection for any wrongful act," Yadav said. He added that every time during the elections, such problems are faced by the administration and in view of a large number of people shirking election duty, stringent measures have to be adopted.

Giving a second chance to the offenders, the Deputy Commissioner said that those employees who had earlier refused to attend poll rehearsal on frivolous grounds may join the rehearsal on July 2 failing which they would find themselves in trouble. He advised the employees to be a part of the Panchayat elections which is a vital part of democracy and exhorted the government employees to perform their duty with dedication.
