four-laning of Bathinda-Zirakpur highway Trees from Bhucho Mandi till near Lehra Bega village in Rampura Phul already felled Megha Mann Tribune News Service
Bathinda, June 26 The divisional manager, Punjab State Forest Development Corporation (PSFDC), Daljit Singh, said the work on axing the auctioned trees have begun. The rest of the work would be done after the panchayat elections, he added. The PSFDC commenced auctioning and axing of trees after the Forest Department, Punjab, transferred these trees in the name of the corporation. “As soon as the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) gives environmental clearance to a project, the Forest Department transfers trees to the PSFDC. The Forest Department does not take responsibility of axing trees. We simply identify the trees and transfer them in the name of the PSFDC. The corporation auctions, axes down the green canopies and pay the amount to us as royalty,” said officials of the Forest Division, preferring not to be named. While the Central government has terminated the contract awarded to two private companies for executing the Rs 2500-crore project of four-laning the Bathinda-Zirakpur highway, the PSFDC is working at its own pace and clearing the ground before the project starts taking shape. Residents of Lehra Bega said many trees being axed were more than 45 years old. “We have no option but to live with the fact that our green lungs are being choked,” said Ranjit Singh, a resident of Bhucho Mandi area. Besides voluminous canopies of neem, the highway is dotted with kikkar, ailanthus, sheesham and other miscellaneous trees, which will be felled. The road is being widened to remove traffic bottlenecks at Rampura Phul, Barnala, Sangrur, Patiala, Banur, Rajpura and other places enroute.

SSA survey finds 3,300 students in dist disabled
Bathinda, June 26 The figure has been arrived at after a door-to-door survey conducted under the ‘Inclusive Education for the Disabled’ programme of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA). As per the programme, the in-school as well as out-of-school children in the age group of 6-14 years were checked for eight categories of impairments. The categories included visually impaired, partially blind, orthopaedic impairment, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, multiple disability and hearing impairment. The survey, which was conducted between June 1 and 9, has also collected details about the number of students who can manage to come to school on their own, how many can do so with some assistance and how many children are so severely challenged that they are unable to come to school. As many as 195 out-of-school children were also identified to be suffering from one or the other kind of disability. The survey was conducted to make sure that all the differently-abled children in the district have disability certificates and railway passes and can avail of the benefits being offered to them by the government. “A large number of these 3,300 students are suffering from low vision or what we call partial blindness. A slightly lower number is of the students who have one or the other kind of orthopaedic disability. The survey will help us initiate various help programmes drafted for such children under the SSA,” said District Special Educator Devinder Kumar. Aiming at addressing the problems being faced by differently-abled children in schools and by teachers teaching such students, cluster-level resource rooms have been set up in the district. There are as many as 20 special teachers who address the problems of students and the teachers at these resource rooms. “To address the problems faced by the children who are unable to travel to schools, as many as 53 assistant special teachers or the inclusive education volunteers (IEVs) in the district have been trained to educate the children on how they could take care of themselves, and to explain to their parents the nuances of special treatment that the child may require and which may better his condition. The IEVs spend three months on every child,” said Kumar. As part of the ‘Inclusive Education for the Disabled’ programme, surgeries are also conducted free of cost in some cases with an objective of treating the disability and enable students to attend classes. Children with orthopaedic disability are provided with physiotherapies to make them overcome their disability. “Children who can manage to come to school but only with some assistance are also given Rs 10 per attendance under the programme to encourage them to continue coming to school,” the District Special Educator said. District Education Officer (Elementary Education) Amarjit Kaur, who is the district project director of the programme for Bathinda, said, “Under the programme, students who have a hole in their hearts will undergo surgeries. Those with low vision will be given medical assistance and will also be operated upon if there is a need. The programme aims at making the children with disabilities a part of the social fabric.” Meanwhile, as a part of the programme, a 12-day summer camp for such students was also organised at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bathinda. As many as 40 children from the district participated in the camp. On the concluding day of the camp, participants presented musical, dance and theatrical items.

Bathinda, June 26 In a press statement issued here, the president of the association, Sadhu Ram Kusla, stated that since Pannu did not head the department of tourism and disaster management, sending him to Uttarakhand for relief work was questionable. “It seems that some people conspired against Pannu as he had highlighted the book scam in the education department and he had cooperated with the inquiry team sent by the Government of India. The video of the incident was made with a high quality camera and was immediately uploaded on social sites indicating that it was a preplanned event and the attackers belonged to Bathinda district,” he said. Fans sulk as Diljit, Neeru perform for mere 10 mins
Bathinda, June 26 The event was scheduled to start at 6 pm and nearly 3,000-4,000 passes had been distributed for free across the city. Till 8.30 pm, the 500-strong crowd, which was waiting for Diljit and Neeru to perform, had to settle with the performances by upcoming singers, who rendered their own songs and asked the gathering to buy their albums. Ironically, the songs sung by these singers had nothing to do with 'sabhyachar' (culture), as the name of the show suggested. While one singer sang about how he still remembers the classroom where he used to meet his love interest the other singer compared the posture of his love interest to that of Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie. Diljit and Neeru, who finally arrived after 8.30 pm, were welcomed with a loud cheer by the crowd. Neeru, who had addressed a press conference earlier during the day in a no-makeup de-glam avatar, had dressed in Punjabi attire for the live show. After addressing the crowd and asking them to watch the film, Diljit finally got down to singing songs. His performance was not what the crowd was waiting for. He started off with singing a song 'Jehda dhakke chaddh gaya yaaran de, Punjab police sardaaran de' from his upcoming film 'Jatt & Juliet 2' and followed it up with two more songs. Neeru Bajwa gave him company on the stage before bidding goodbye to the audience, which had been waiting for them since evening. |
