Six killed in separate accidents
New Delhi, June 14 The man has been identified as Ramu. He worked at Rajdhani Enclave in Preet Vihar. The police said as there were no eyewitnesses, the vehicle could not be identified. "It is possible that the vehicle could be a Mercedes Benz as we found the company's ensign on the spot," said a police official. The incident took place at 10.30 pm. Ramu was crossing the road at Vikas Marg, which is located between the Nirman Vihar and Preet Vihar Metro stations. A passerby, who saw him lying on the ground, informed the police control room (PCR). The PCR van rushed him to Metro Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The police official said he had come to Delhi to meet one of his friends in Okhla. They were heading towards this friend's house in Khoda Colony when the accident took place at 3.10 am near the Mayur Vihar Phase-I Metro station. The bike was being driven at a high speed and the two were reportedly not wearing helmets. The motorcycle rammed into the railings, causing Mehandi to fall off the flyover, which is at a height of 50 ft from the ground. The pillion rider was lying near the railings in a critical condition. A passerby informed the police and they were taken to Jeevan Anmol Hospital, where Mehandi was declared dead. Tunnel trauma: Metro panel suggests steps
New Delhi, June 14 An internal preliminary inquiry report into the incident that happened due to a technical snag on a train on the Central Secretariat-Udyog Bhawan line has suggested measures to avoid such incidents in future. The three-member committee proposed that the DMRC operational managers will be asked to initiate evacuation of passengers in case they are stranded in the tunnel without lights and ventilation for more than ten minutes. DMRC engineers have been asked to examine the feasibility of having a secondary backup system for train lightning and ventilation in an emergency. It said that the lighting in the underground tunnel should be reoriented by the Metro electrical engineers so that a clear view of the passage is available to the commuters during an evacuation. The committee also suggested that in such situations, the DMRC operational managers should normally evacuate passengers if they are not able to rectify the fault through local trouble-shooting and in case a rescue train has to be thrust into service, it will be done on the orders of the Operation Control Centre

Nitrates in groundwater make rare 'blue baby’ case
New Delhi, June 14 When the 23-day-old baby was brought to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) last month, her body was in blue colour and the suspicion of heart defect was ruled out in the blood tests and echocardiogram, which were normal while the connection of the 'bluishness' to breastfeeding too was overruled, said doctors from the private hospital's department of neonatology. The vice-chairperson of the neonatology department, Dr Satish Saluja, said, "The baby was born healthy and it was 20 days after her birth that she started getting blue. “This is commonly due to an underlying heart or lung problem or if the lactating mother was on some medicine like anti-leprosy medication." But in this case, the baby was not breastfed. It was instead administered packaged formula milk mixed with the underground boring water in village Dhamori Khurd. Its sample report was sent for testing to the FICCI laboratory in Dwarka here yesterday which confirmed the presence of high nitrate levels of 27 p.p.m. against the normal levels of less than 10 p.p.m. After assessment, she was orally given methyline blue which has the property to reverse the ferric form of blood to ferrous form and within 12 hours, the results were satisfactory. After about 48 hours, the colour of the baby changed from blue to normal, added Dr Saluja. Based on the findings, doctors have cautioned that the infants for whom the formula is prepared with boring or well water remain a high-risk group for nitrate poisoning due to mixing of sewage or fertilisers in the water. "The baby was brought to us well on time and the problem got corrected but there could be other contaminants in underground water in the area. The groundwater samples of the area where there is excessive use of pesticides and discharge of industrial wastes need to be tested
as it could trigger chronic health problems," Dr Saluja said. |

BJP misleading people on power tariff hike: Cong
New Delhi, June 14 Urban Development Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said power tariff in Delhi was "cheaper" than the BJP-ruled states and the bills have gone up due to round-the-clock supply of electricity. Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel had announced that the electricity tariff would be slashed by 30 per cent, if his party came to power in the assembly polls in Delhi slated for November. "He is talking about it (to slash rates) to get votes. If he really has such a formula, he should give it to the Chief Ministers of the BJP-rules states. |
