Lowest gender ratio in 5 constituencies
EC to start summary revision of rolls on July 1
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 7
Five Assembly constituencies in Delhi have the lowest gender ratio of registration in electoral rolls, said senior officials of the Delhi State Election Commission.

The constituencies with the lowest ratio are found to be Tughlakabad (640), Sangam Vihar (668), Okhla (671), Chattarpur (700) and Badarpur (708).

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vijay Dev said that the female staff camps have been organized to encourage the gender ratio.

"We have focused on increasing this ratio. In 2012, special camps were organized in schools and colleges where 8.18 lakh registrants were enrolled," said Dev.

The commission has also taken action against 82 employees for non-performance. As many as 13 FIRs were registered for refusing work and involvement in bribery, nine were suspended and the rest issued show cause notice.

Plunging into action in preparation for the Assembly elections, the Election Commission will start the summary revision of rolls on July 1. Around 1,900 locations, including schools and colleges, have been identified for enrolling the names. Volunteers will be nominated as enrolment ambassadors for this mega exercise.

The summary revision is a significant campaign before the Assembly elections for inviting 'claims and objections' by publishing draft rolls which will be displayed at the office of the district election officers, electoral registration officers, voter centres and polling station buildings.

"We have appealed to nationalized political parties to appoint their booth-level agents well in time so that they can positively contribute to the revision process," he said.

Further, in the last 10 months about 55,000 duplicate electors have been removed from the electoral rolls.

An SMS service is also on the way by the CEO office to help people know about their constituencies.

"For the convenience of the citizens, we are developing an 'SMS search' facility for electors. To give shape to this initiative, we have recently corrected about 1.58 lakh duplicate Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers and about 9,000 deficient and incomplete numbers. People may be able to use this facility from July 1 onwards," said Dev. He said that since January 15 this year, another 4.5 lakh electors have been added. Till date, there are 1.12 crore electors in Delhi.

DPCC chief kicks off ‘padyatra’ to woo voters
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 7
Keeping in view the ensuing Assembly elections, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Jai Prakash Agarwal has started ‘padyatra’ to woo the electorate.

This is the first step taken by the DPCC president after All-India Congress Committee vice-president Rahul Gandhi asked the partymen to work unitedly to bring the party back into power in Delhi.

Agarwal started padayatra from Chirag Dilli Temple and then went through the Harijan Mohalla before ending at the Dargah.

Agarwal was accompanied by spokesperson for DPCC Jitendra Kumar Kochar, block president Bhrampal Popal, Deepak Bharadwaj and Mahendra Singh.

The DPCC chief started the padayatra after offering prayers at the temple and a chaddar at the dargah. Thousands of Congress workers, carrying flags and banners, accompanied him.

During the yatra he told the gathering that the BJP, ruling all the three municipal corporations in the capital, was involved in corruption. Corruption in the corporations has touched a new high. All the three corporations are in appalling conditions, he said.

The Congress is the party of the poor and the toiling masses while the BJP was the party of rich and powerful people, he said.

The Congress is taking the path of development and progress, and has played a decisive role in the all-round development of Delhi, said the DPCC president.
