Second hand smoke more lethal: Experts
New Delhi, May 29 As was with a 65-year-old woman to whom her diagnosis with lung cancer in a private hospital in Delhi came as a shocker particularly since she was a non smoker and had been pursuing a fairly healthy lifestyle. Dr. Ullas
Batra, consultant medical oncology at Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Institute, where she is undergoing treatment, said, "She was diagnosed with lung cancer and when probed further, it was discovered that she had been exposed to second-hand smoking since 40 years because of her husband." Currently, for no fault of her own, the woman is undergoing painful chemotherapies and radiation therapies, but at the end-stage of the disease they do not seem to be much effective either. Her husband has given up smoking, but the realisation has come a tad too late. If timed better, the act could have saved his wife from the dreaded disease. This is not a single example, we encounter such cases that result from possible second hand smoke quite often," added Dr
Batra. Public health experts from AIIMs point out that nearly 29 per cent of non smokers too are found to be susceptible to second hand smoke in public places too in the Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2009-2010. All thanks to the laxity on the part of the authorities that people even in public places and sensitive areas, such as hospitals and college campuses, markets too continue to violate the anti-smoking and tobacco laws right under the nose of the vigilant system. Second hand smoke is lethal because it has at least twice the amount of nicotine and tar as the smoke inhaled by the smoker, has five times the amount of carbon monoxide, contains higher levels of ammonia and cadmium, contains hydrogen cyanide, a toxic poisonous gas, contains nitrogen dioxide which is very harmful. A regular exposure to second hand smoke increases the risk of lung disease by 25 per cent and heart disease by 10 per cent. It is found that 66 per cent of the smoke from a cigarette is not inhaled by the smoker, but enters the air around having a damaging effect on others around, said experts. |

BJP to launch Janata Adalats tomorrow
New Delhi, May 30 'Adalats' will be held by the BJP councillors in their respective areas of three municipal corporations, said president of the Delhi party unit Vijay
Goel, in order to listen to public grievances on sanitation, house taxes, pensions and other civic amenities provided by the civic authority. The party will also provide 'Admission Information Booklet for Delhi University' during the hearings. "This will help people directly approach their civic representatives and express their grievances. Also, our councillors will be held accountable to the people who voted for them," Goel added. The hearing will be held on every Tuesday and Saturday from now on, where the
councillor, along with the civic body representatives, will hear public grievances and take steps to solve them. "The Congress government in Delhi is stalling the developmental works in unauthorised colonies by not allowing councillors to spend their money in these colonies. It is also discriminating against 583 unauthorised colonies on government land," said Goel alleging that the Delhi government is taking a 'step- motherly' attitude towards the civic bodies. |
