Jawan cremated with state honours: Twenty eight-year-old army jawan Gursewak Singh was cremated with full state honours at Kairon village in Tarn Taran district on Thursday. He had died in an avalanche at Siachen on May 27. Sources said he was deployed at the Tiger Post.

Moga
Man kills wife in Moga village: Bachittar Singh of Kot-ise-Khan town in the district allegedly killed his wife Bimla Devi with a knife on Wednesday. Preliminary investigations revealed the accused, who had snapped ties with his elder son over a family dispute, did not like his wife visiting his house. When she refused to listen, he killed her. The accused is absconding.

8,012 boxes of liquor seized
: Excise and Taxation officials on Thursday seized 8,012 boxes of beer and whisky worth Rs 85 lakh, stocked "illegally" at four shops on Malout Road here. The stock belonged to Unique Wine Developers Ltd, a firm whose licence was cancelled on May 7. PK Malhotra, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Muktsar, said, "As many as 5,611 boxes of branded beer and 2,401 boxes of IMFL liquor were seized from the shops."

3 hurt in clash over land dispute
: Three persons, including a patwari, were injured in a clash allegedly over a land dispute at Gurre village on Thursday. Station House Officer (SHO) Subhash Bath said the victims, Thomas Masih, patwari of Adharwal village, Dharam Veer and Kamal of Lambhrra village, were admitted to the local Civil Hospital. A case has been registered.

Goods worth Rs 1 cr damaged in fire: Some miscreants allegedly set a sanitary shop on fire on late Tuesday night. Goods worth more than Rs 1 crore were damaged. Fire tenders from Jalandhar were pressed into service. It took six hours for the firemen to douse the flames. Nakodar DSP HS Hundal said the police had registered a case against unidentified persons. Further investigations were on, but no arrest had been made so far, he added.

Tyres of two cars stolen: The incidents of tyre thefts are increasing in the city. Karan Galhotra, a resident of Sector 8-C, today reported that someone had stolen two wheels of his car, which was parked in front of his house. In another incident, Rakesh Garg, a resident of Sector 40, reported that someone had stolen the tyres and alloy wheels of his car (No. CH-04H-9381), which was parked in front of his house.

Man booked for jumping bail: The UT police has registered a case against a drug peddler for jumping bail and not appearing before the court. A case under Section 229 (A) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Sector 36 police station here against Bablu, a resident of Bhaskar Colony, Sector 25, who did not appear before the court on May 17 in a four-year-old case registered under the NDPS Act against him.

Camp on loan facilities
: An awareness camp on loan facilities for skilled and semi-skilled persons was organised at Ghou Manhasa village in Marh block on Wednesday. Jeyoti Bhat from Kalamkari Centre Society spoke.

Samba wins in volleyball: The eves of Samba district clinched the U-14 and U-17 volleyball titles in the inter-district volleyball tournament organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports at Government High School, Ghagwal, on Wednesday. In the U-17 finals, Samba beat Kathua by 3-0. In the U-14, Samba beat Udhampur by 3-0.

Awareness camp held: Civil Defence Rajouri organised an awareness camp on ‘Earthquake and school fire safety’ at Elite Public Higher Secondary School Saaj in Thannamandi area of Rajouri district on Wednesday. About 120 students and staff members of the school participated in the camp. Suresh Kumar Chib, Dy SP Dy Controller Civil Defence, Rajouri, was the chief guest while school principal Mohd Shabir presided over the function. Suresh Kumar Chib, Deputy Controller, Civil Defence, Rajouri, spoke on the steps and precautions required to be taken before, during and after an earthquake.
