Power cuts make city sweat
Jammu, June 9 The last month has been the worst with many transformers tripping because of overload. The PDD blames it on the excessive burden put on the grid stations due to the unregistered load but many blame it on the poor maintenance of rusting transformers. Further the shortfall in power supply has forced the PDD to resort to cuts, following warnings from the Northern Grid not to overdraw power. The state needs 2,300 MW of power. It faces a shortfall of 650 to 700 MW as against the availability of 1,650 MW of electricity from all sources. This has to be distributed between the Jammu region and Kashmir Valley. "Since May 1, there have been frequent cuts in our area and frequent fluctuations have rendered our all electronic cooling gadgets useless. We don't get regular power supply for even two hours," rued Jagdeev Singh, a resident of Channi Himmat. Posh localities of Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Trikuta nagar, Channi Himmat, Jeevan nagar, Janipur, parts of Muthi and Bantalab are left to face sweltering summer days without power. The entire region is under the grip of intense heat wave. Residents spend sleepless nights, due to frequent power shutdowns. Chief Engineer, Sehnaz Goni, blamed excessive heat for tripping of transformers, leading to power cuts. “We have enough electricity but illegal load and summer heat is creating problems with our systems and transformers. We are doing our best to maintain supply. Improvement will be only after there is change in the weather," Goni said. "A middle class family uses a fan, cooler and a fridge and action should be taken against the rich who use air conditioners for overdrawing power," said Ravi Sharma, a resident of Janipur. |

Pay up or no transformer repair, industry assn to PDD
Jammu, June 9 When the rush of repair work at the workshops of the Power Development Department (PDD) increases, the SSIA repairs power transformers. However, due to non-clearance of liability by the government, the association has decided to stop the repair work till their dues are cleared. “We have received the meagre amount of Rs 20 lakh against the liability of more than 10 crore for the repair of the transformers, and this amount has accumulated over the past few years,” alleged SSIA president Harith Bhalla. He said the association had exhausted all funds and had no capacity to undertake the repair activity. “We are forced to stop the repair of the transformers till the payment is released,” he stated. If the repair work is stopped, it will further increase the power woes and ultimately, it will be the people who will suffer. Accusing the government of adopting double standards, the association president, referring of a letter written by the chief engineer, electricity maintenance (EM) and RE wing, alleged the government had released Rs 175 lakh in favour of the EM and RE wing of Kashmir against Rs 20 lakh for the same wings of Jammu for the repair of the damaged transformers. He alleged during summers, Jammu needs more transformers and the amount should be released equally, as was being done in the past. He said the government had adopted a discriminatory approach towards the division. Gurbachan Singh, superintending officer, PDD, said the liability of Kashmir was more and the government had released equal money on percentage basis. |

JMC decides to get ready for monsoon
Jammu, June 9 Men and machinery is being collected to start removing debris from Rajiv Nagar, Gangyal, Digiana, Trikuta Nagar, Bhour Camp nullahs so that the residents of the localities are saved from the flooding during the monsoon. Officials said efforts were being made to create awareness among the local residents not to dump building material in the nullahs as it clogs them during rainfall, resulting in the water entering adjoining areas. Adding to the problem is numerous unauthorised colonies constructed some of them even in khuds and nullahs or on their banks. Minister for Housing, Raman Bhalla, has earmarked Rs 68 crore to modernise these nullahs. The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) has been approached to fortify the banks and lay concrete floors. Sources said efforts were also being made to regularise illegal residential colonies as flash floods had been wreaking havoc. Devotees look towards admn for facilities at shrine
Jammu, June 9 The devotees visiting the historic Mahamaya temple, built by Maharaja Gulab Singh in the 19th Century, rue lack of basic facilities and cleanliness here. One of the revered temples dedicated to mother goddess is visited by hundreds of pilgrims daily. Even the Tourism Department and the Dharmath Trust, which looks after several temples in the state or provides financial help is yet to make efforts to provide services for pilgrims who visit the shrine. Steps in this direction can make the shrine located on the national highway a major tourist attraction. No public transport is available to reach the shrine. “We have been demanding transport facility, but to no avail,”
said Rajan Sharma, a local resident. Though the permit has been given to the mini-buses operators but they hardly operate vehicles on the said route and even the authorities concerned have turned a blind eye towards the menace. Surrounded by a forest, the view from temple of Jammu city and Trikuta mountain range is breathtaking. |

JKCA warns cricketers against playing in unauthorised tournaments
Jammu, June 9 In fact, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had issued a letter to all state cricket bodies to inform the cricketers before they play in any unauthorised tournament.” “In 2007, when the Indian Cricket League (ICL) was started, the BCCI had issued letters to all state cricket associations, including the JKCA. We informed the cricketers about the development. The same letter was issued by the apex cricket body in 2011 also and we again apprised the persons concerned, including the players, of the matter,” Bhat said. “In the interest of cricketers of our state, the JKCA, at its working committee meeting, has decided to approach the media to publish this important letter issued by the BCCI, so that the cricketers living in the state get the notice,” stated the JKCA joint secretary. He said the JKCA was an affiliated unit of the BCCI and they had to follow the rules. “The BCCI does not allow its registered players to participate in any unapproved tournaments. It does not, however, bind any player to not compete in any such competitions.” “It is for them to decide whether they want to participate in it or not. The JKCA has 13 affiliated clubs and those players who do not belong to any of the affiliated clubs are free to participate in such tournaments. The association cannot stop anyone from organising a cricket tournament, but can ask the players to adhere to the BCCI guidelines,” said Bhat. However, the letter issued by the BCCI claimed that any affiliated player of the BCCI or those who taking benefits from the board, cannot get involved in any unauthorised tournament. If any player still wants to participate, it was entirely his decision and he will have to leave the state cricket body and the BCCI. |
