Sports council may announce fee concession for trainees
Jammu, June 5 Sources said the parents of sportspersons had expressed displeasure over the hike in registration fee and remained adamant not to pay the new fee besides putting pressure on the authorities to roll back the decision. Sources added that as a result, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, who is also the vice-president of the autonomous sports body, had convened a meeting with the office-bearers and held threadbare discussion on this issue. The sources said though it was decided in the meeting that no concession in registration fee would be provided to the trainees of above 21 years age group, there was a general view that if the concession was given, trainees of other age groups and their parents might oppose the move. “Though the official announcement is yet to be made by the authorities, it is likely that concession in registration fee will be given to the trainees in all age groups in the better interest of all,” a sports council official said. “In fact when the minister convened a meeting, it was obvious that he was particular about the smooth functioning of the department. The way things were going after the hike in the registration fee of players, it was imperative to take an unanimous but balanced decision,” he added. “For example, if the registration fee of above 21 years age group is Rs 1,800 as per the recent hike and the authorities announce a decision to reduce it, then it will be around Rs 600 to 700,” he said. The sources added that a suggestion was also mooted in the meeting where it was mentioned that outstanding sportspersons, who had brought laurels to the state in different disciplines, should be provide coaching free of cost. |

Demanding regularisation, 1,000 safai karamcharis threaten to suspend work
Jammu, June 5 They are being paid Rs 3,900, while they were promised Rs 4,500. They are regularly holding protests against contractors and the corporation, which has stopped the recruitment of permanent safai karamcharis due to fund crunch and state subject issue, as many of the workers are non-state subjects. Sources said the corporation had decided to continue its earlier practice of giving contract to NGOs to keep the city clean. “We are facing a major fraud as contractors with the support of municipal staff do not pay us the promised salary and humiliate us whenever the issue is raised,” said Vijay Sood, one of the workers. “Hundreds of people are working to maintain sanitation in the city, but no consideration is given to solve our issues. So many posts are vacant and the process should be started to fill them,” said Parvez, another sanitation worker. Apart from regularisation, workers are demanding better working conditions, keeping in view the rising workload and contact with highly contaminated garbage and other materials. They said work pressure on them was high as compared to daily wages being provided to them. Before the formation of the JMC in 2005, there were 23 wards, but as the city had expanded, the government decided to create 48 new wards covering the newly established colonies, which came up during the past two decades. Now there are 71 municipal wards under the municipal limits. Jammu generates nearly 350 tonnes of garbage daily and it is expected that there will be tremendous increase in the solid waste generation in the next decade keeping in view the growing population. |

Ahead of Amarnath yatra, work at Yatri Niwas in full swing
Jammu, June 5 Besides, security points, health check-up points and other pilgrimage-related preparations will be completed within a week. Men are on the job to give new colour to walls and new floor tiles are being put in place to make the Yatri Niwas livable for pilgrims coming from other parts of the country. “The renovation work will be completed within five to seven days and roads leading to the Yatri Niwas have been re-laid. Keeping in view the security, points have been identified and everything will be put in place within a few days,” said Ajit Kumar Sahu, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu. The annual Amarnath Yatra will commence on June 28 and will end on August 21 on the eve of Rakhsha Bandhan. Every year lakhs of pilgrims from other parts of the country reach Jammu to start their journey towards the Amarnath cave. Most of the pilgrims reach the Yatri Niwas, Jammu, to get pilgrimage-related information and even to stay there. Sadhus have already started reaching Jammu and in a few days, the Yatri Niwas will be thrown open for them. This year, getting health certificate is a must for pilgrims before the start of the pilgrimage and in its absence, nobody will be allowed to move forward. This step was taken after the directions of the Supreme Court last year when more than 100 pilgrims were killed during the Yatra. “People without health certificates will not be registered and this time a group of specialised doctors will have to give this certificate to pilgrims,” Sahu said, adding that no on-the-spot registration would be done this year. The registration of pilgrims is being done online and through bank counters established in various parts of the country. No unregistered pilgrim will be allowed to take part in the pilgrimage. “In case of any slots available, the registration will be done at the Yatri Niwas and beyond that, no registration will be done,” the Deputy Commissioner added. |

Consumer body discusses power situation with officials
Jammu, June 5 Association members met PDD Development Commissioner Asgar Ali, Chief Engineer Sehnaz Goni, Gurcharan Singh, SE, Jammu, and Executive Engineers of the M&RE Divisions to discuss the problems being faced by the people due to frequent power cuts. Seeking reasons for the lapse on the part of the PDD to improve the existing under-capacity supply and distribution system, CWA members expressed concern, particularly when the funds for improvement were already available. “It was explained that non-utilisation of available funds was due to poor response of the tender enquiry floated for the work under the R-APDRP by the PDD and non-finalisation of the engagement of the consultants to be engaged,” the members said. Problems of heavy T&D losses, power shortage, theft and 100 per cent metering
were also discussed. Regarding the demand of starting area-wise 24-hours helpline to attend to the public complaints, it was explained that work of creating data centres would be taken up soon. The Commissioner, PDD, also made it clear that strict monitoring of energy had been started and all the substations would be metered this year and the department should be able to identify loss-prone areas and the priority for improvement and augmentation would be given to the areas which show lesser losses. |

Strike by cooks a boon for Jammu varsity hostelers
Jammu, June 5 For this, the hostelers were being charged as per their “day-to-day” hostel canteens’ expenses while the remaining cost of the food was being borne by the university. There were seven hostels, including three girls’ hostels on the Jammu University campus, for meritorious students and those belonging to far-off places. While students staying in boys’ hostels were allowed to take food from outside the campus, the hostelers in three girls’ hostels viz Priyadarshni hostel, Chanderbagha hostel and Sarojni Naidu hostel were being served three meals a day either in packed form or being provided through reputed caterers. Sources said around 300 students and scholars staying in girls’ hostels had registered a strong protest last week when cooks and mess boys went on a strike in support of non-gazetted employees. “Hostelers from girls’ hostels had staged a protest at night last week after they were deprived of food due to strike of mess boys and cooks. Top officials of the university administration had rushed to the hostels and pacified the agitating students by arranging packed food from a reputed restaurant in the Gandhi Nagar area,” the sources said. The mess boys and the cooks, after suspending their strike on May 31, again went on strike from June 3 putting the university authorities in a quandary. “The university administration constituted a committee to deal with the situation arising out of the strike of cooks and mess boys. The committee has engaged some contractors or caterers who have been supplying three meals a day to girls staying in hostels,” Professor Ramnika Jalali, provost (girls) hostels, Jammu University said. He said all the necessary measures had been taken to ensure proper food
facilities to the students and scholars staying in the hostels. Rakesh Chib, president, Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association, said it was the duty of the university authorities to arrange food for students and scholars staying in hostels in view of the non-gazetted employees’ strike. “Why should students suffer for the ongoing tussle between the university administration and the employees, It is good that they have been arranging food for the students from outside in the wake of strike of cooks and mess boys,” Chib said. Over 700 non-gazetted employees comprising Class- IV and casual workers had been protesting in support of their demands, which include removal of pay anomalies, regularisation of causal workers and reduction in the period of conducting test for promotion of Class-IV employees from five years to three years, for the last 25 days. However, still it is pending,” they said.
