JU to take up demands of employees with govt again
Jammu, June 4 The employees said they would not call off their 24-day long strike till the university administration fulfilled their demands. “We are trying our best to end the stalemate. We have already accepted most of the demands of the employees but there is no flexibility on the part of the employees on the demand for regularisation of causal workers. We will take up the issue of regularisation of casual workers with the state government tomorrow and we are hopeful of positive response from the government," Professor Manoj K Dhar, Registrar, University of Jammu, said. Krishan Chand, Jammu University Non-Gazetted and Casual Workers Association representative said they (representatives of employees) held a meeting with the members of high-level committee, which had been constituted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, this afternoon. It failed to yield any results. “We took part in the fifth round of talks with the committee in the afternoon but no agreement could be reached with the administration. We have decided to continue our agitation till the authorities agree to fulfil our demands," Chand said. Instead of taking concrete steps, they (authorities) resorted to mere lip service. On Sunday, the University authorities had issued a statement claiming that they had "accepted most of the demands of Class-IV employees". "The Class IV employees will get pre-revised scale of Rs 4,000-Rs 6,000 for category-I and of Rs 5,000-Rs 8,000 for category-II after getting the third step in career advancement scheme which has been recently approved. By doing so, the major demand of the striking employees has been accepted. It would mean a major jump in their salaries," the statement added. The varsity authorities had urged the employees to call off their strike in the interest of the varsity. Meanwhile, sanitary conditions worsened on the campus as sanitary workers abstained from work. The inmates of the seven varsity hostels were forced to take food from outside as cooks and mess boys also went on strike in support of non-gazetted employees. Around 700 non-gazetted employees comprising Class- IV and casual workers had been protesting in support of their demands which include removal of pay anomalies, regularisation of causal workers and reduction in the period of conducting test for promotion of Class-IV employees from five years to three years. |

Govt adopting double standard, say acid attack victim’s kin
Barnota (RS Pura), June 4 The accused Sanjeev Kumar was arrested but no one visited the victim's family dealing with the tragedy. After a similar incident in Srinagar on January 2, Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture, Raman Bhalla, visited the victim's family in March. He provided some financial help and promised to help the family send her for advanced treatment outside the state. His visit followed public pressure. "Actually we forced the authorities to send a minister because the government was adopting double standards in providing relief to the acid attack victims in the state and we raised our voice against this brazen discrimination," Sabitra Devi, a local Panchayat member of Barnota said. The women panchayat members have reason to target the state government because the acid victim from Srinagar was airlifted to Delhi the very next day of the attack and the state government also gave her a job with the state school education department, on compassionate grounds besides bearing Rs 8 lakh as the cost of her treatment. On the other hand, Ruman Lata was given only a paltry sum of Rs 50,000 by the state government. "Are we living in a country like Pakistan where minorities and the weaker sections are treated as second class citizens," asked Yashpal, the father of the victim and regretted that the government had not kept its promise of providing advanced treatment to Rupan. “For the last one year we have been visiting Delhi for advanced treatment on our own expenses but unlike the acid victim from Kashmir, authorities have not come forward to take my sister outside for treatment," rued Sajan Bhagat, younger brother of Rupan, while narrating tale of the apathy of the state government. Rupan, who is in Delhi along with her mother to seek appointment with doctor, said over the phone that her family has so far spent Rs 1.75 lakh on her since the attack. "If all political parties, including the ruling party came forward to support acid victim of Srinagar, why same yardstick is not being adopted in my case," she said. She alleged that the state government had adopted double standards in dealing with such tragedies. Addressing a Women's Day function in Jammu this year, CM Omar Abdullah had admitted that Rs 8 lakh spent on the Sringar acid attack victim was paid by the government. the painful divide Ruman Lata, Dalit victim from Jammu, was given a paltry sum of Rs 50,000 as relief by the state government. The acid attack victim from Srinagar was airlifted to Delhi the very next day and the state government also gave her a job with the state school education department, on compassionate grounds besides bearing ~8 lakh as the cost of her treatment NC provincial president of Kashmir, Nasir Aslam Wani and Tanvir Sadiq, political secretary to the CM had visited the Srinagar acid attack victim to handover her appointment letter while no one visited the Jammu girl. |
