Jalandhar, June 6
In a case of personal vendetta, the family of a girl Parveen Kumari, whose face was blackened last year by several people of her village, has once again been issued threats on their return to Rahimpur village.

Parveen Kumari, her mother Bonso and younger sister Suman Bala had left their village falling under Kartarpur police station when they were humiliated and threatened by Nambardar Harkishan Pappu on May 22 last year.

This time around too, when they returned to the village on May 20, Harkishan threatened them with dire consequences if they didn’t leave the village.

Bonso said, “Harkishan carrying a sharp-edged weapon came to our house on May 30 and threatened us.”

Banso said that Harkishan and his family members, including his wife Rani, his brother Ramu, Ramu’s wife Manjit and their mother Charan Kaur blackened her daughter Parveen Kumari’s face when they found that my son Varinder was having a love affair with Harkishan’ niece Preeti of Alipur village. Both of them were now happily married, she said.

Banso said, “They dragged my 17-year-old daughter Parveen Kumari to their house, humiliated her, blackened her face and took her to the village “chabutra”.

The police took over three months to register the FIR against the accused and still not presented the charge sheet in court.

After the recent threats, Banso met with the Senior Superintendent of Police Yurinder Singh Hayer on Friday to seek justice.

Hayer, when contacted, said, “I have directed SP (Operations) Gurmeet Singh to look into the matter. After I get the report from him, we will take action appropriately.”

Swimming pool for Gurdaspur
Tribune News Service

Gurdaspur, June 6
Sports aficionados of the border town got a shot in the arm when the local Delhi Public School (DPS) authorities inaugurated the first swimming pool in the town here on Wednesday.

The pool, built to international specifications, was formally inaugurated by the chairperson of the District Red Cross Society, Dr Bhavna Trikha, who is also the wife of the Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner (DC), Dr Abhinav Trikha.

The industrially backward town has little or no sports infrastructure to boast about and the inauguration of the 25mx13m pool has been welcomed by residents and sports lovers alike.

Dr AN Kaushal, secretary, District Red Cross Society, said the authorities were considering a proposal by residents to open up the pool for the general public. "We will go in for a pay and play system whereby students of other educational institutions can pay a nominal amount to use the pool.

"The town has a six a side astro-turf, but it is lying in a state of disuse at the government college grounds due to the apathy of the state government. The need of the hour was to create more sports infrastructure in the town in an attempt to woo students away from the scourge of drugs. That is the reason why we have established the state of the art pool," said Renu Kaushal, pro vice-chairperson of the school.
