India put aside worries
Cardiff, June 6 The star of the show was Dhawan, who made 114 of a mere 94 balls to set the tone for India. The left-hander had scored 185 on his Test debut against Australia in March. South Africa, who ran neck-and-neck in terms of runs with India till at least the 35th over, paid the price for losing far too many wickets after at least three middle-order batsmen frittered good starts. India, on the other hand, profited after their openers Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (65) laid a solid foundation with an opening stand of 127. This was the biggest difference between victory and defeat. Dhawan was adjudged Man of the Match. Robin Peterson's departure in the 25th over opened the floodgates as South Africa lost three quick wickets, including the man who had the calibre to take the game to the wire, skipper A B De
Villiers. Two horrible mix-ups ruined the South African run chase. Peterson, who survived a run out chance when he was on 29, was not lucky the second time as a diving Ravindra Jadeja caught him well short after De Villiers refused to run. The left-handed Peterson was out for 68 (72 balls, 6 x 4s) and his 124-run third-wicket partnership with De Villiers kept South Africa in the running even after the Proteas lost openers Hashim Amla (22) and Colin Ingram (6) to Indian pacers Umesh Yadav (2/75) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/49), respectively. Peterson, struck in the elbow by a Yadav delivery when he was on 17, battled pain and stitched a confident stand with his captain till disaster struck. J P Duminy (LBW to Jadeja for 14) followed Peterson and then a rush of blood saw De Villiers throw his wicket away after a polished 70 off 71 balls, his 33rd ODI half-century. Interestingly, all the seven completed ODIs here have been won by the team batting second. With this win Indian team has put aside various controversies dogging the team in past one month. If India can put up a good show here they will do good for the fans who have been sceptical of the game. The Indian team now take on West Indies on June 11, followed by Pakistan on June 15.

BCCI to discuss Kundra issue at working committee meet
Kolkata, June 6 Addressing a press conference here, the BCCI Working Group's chief Jagmohan Dalmiya said the entire issue of Raj Kundra's alleged involvement in betting will come up for discussion at the meeting. “Raj Kundra issue will be discussed in the Working Committee, which is going to be held on June 10 and after we hear the details, if it demands any strict action, we will look into it," Dalmiya said. The veteran administrator also said that Baroda Cricket Association's Sanjay Patel will be the new BCCI Secretary while the post of the treasurer will be announced later. He also said that no BCCI member will be part of the inquiry Commission and the two retired High Court judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramaniam will form the two-member commission to probe allegations against BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and CSK. Both justices Chouta and Balasubramaniam were members of the original panel, which also had BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale as the third member. The Committee had to be re-constituted following Jagdale's resignation. Dalmiya was given the responsibility to choose the third member. “I have decided that let there be a two-man commission. We pose full faith in the two retired judges and leave the matter to them. These two judges will carry on the probe," Dalmiya said. Dalmiya said there would be no time frame for the Commission to submit the report to the BCCI since, “we want total justice and will go deep into it. We will not curtail inquiry.” It's shocking: Jagdale on Kundra's admission
Former BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale expressed shock over Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra's admission to betting in IPL matches, saying it furthers shakes faith of the fans in the sport. “It (Betting) is morally wrong since you're owning a team. Such things are not good for cricket and not good for IPL. It's another instance of damaging the faith, Indian cricket lovers have in the sport. Really shocking," said Jagdale, who resigned recently from his BCCI position. Asked if Royals should be suspended if charges of betting against Kundra is proved, Jagdale said the decision lies with the IPL authorities. “I can't comment on the legalities. It's is upto the Governing Council and Executive Committee (to decide on the fate of RR),” he said. “These are the lessons the BCCI will have to learn. The sooner they do it the better it will be. They need to sit together and give top priority to cleaning the system and all that has happened recently. Top priorities should be given to it. And not to any individual who is holding any post. There are people who are capable of taking decisions in the BCCI. And such decisions will be taken soon," he said. IPL, CLT20 should be put on hold pending inquiry: Modi
Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi suggested that the upcoming Champions League T20 and next year's IPL should be put "on hold" till the time the sport is completely free of corruption. "IPL 7 and current upcoming CL should be put on hold till full and complete cleansing of Bcci and IPL is done. One cannot continue to take fans for a ride," Modi wrote on his twitter handle. Modi said Kundra should be terminated. “Just woke up to flurry of new activities - Rule is simple if an owner in involved in betting - he should be terminated. “The rules on this have no ambiguity. Betting is a no no," Modi said.
— Agencies Lanka mull strict anti-fixing law
The Sri Lankan government is mulling to bring a tough anti-corruption law against unfair practices in sports in the wake of spot-fixing scandals in the IPL and Bangladesh Premier League. "We are bringing a law against fixing and are working on its draft. It will have strict provisions like life ban if anyone found guilty of fixing. I will send the draft to the cabinet and after its approval, it will be passed by the Parliament. The whole process will take around six months," Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said from Colombo. Aluthgamage vowed to put in place a proper mechanism to to combat ill practices in the Sri Lankan Premier League. "Naturally, we will be much more alert this time in the wake of what has happened in the IPL and BPL. The Board (SLC) will work with ICC's anti-corruption unit officials during the league," he said. |
It’s an interim post but I will do justice: Patel
New Delhi, June 6 I am fully confident that I will perform the duties to the best of my abilities and do justice to the role," Patel, who is the secretary of Baroda Cricket Association, told PTI. Asked how difficult it will be to take up this role at a juncture when Indian cricket has been rocked by betting and spot-fixing scandal, Patel answered: "Agreed the time is difficult but we will have to work hard to regain the faith of millions of cricket crazy fans who have been shaken by this controversy. "Our endeavour will be to clean up the mess and I can assure you that guilty won't go unpunished." Patel also informed that the outgoing secretary Sanjay Jagdale has spoken to him. “I have spoken to Sanjay and he had assured me that he will providing me with all help so that I can run the office of secretary smoothly," he said. To a query that whether he had worked with newly-appointed BCCI's Working Group chief Jagmohan Dalmiya earlier, Patel replied, "I have known Mr. Dalmiya for more than a decade now. I have been regularly attending important BCCI meeting since 2002. I have also been a member of the BCCI's finance committee for 4 years. I believe I have the experience to work in an efficient manner." HC asks ESPN to share feed of CT with DD
A day before the commencement of the ICC Champions trophy 2013 in England, the Delhi High Court today directed ESPN channel to provide live signal of the international cricket tournament to Doordarshan without any commercial till the its further order. A vacation bench of justices Manmohan Singh and R V Easwar said in an interim order that "till the next date, we direct that the petitioner (ESPN) shall provide live signals which would be clean without any commercial to Doordarshan so that Doordarshan would be able to telecast the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 as per commitment and object of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act". The bench also said the pleadings in the matter are yet to be completed and “the interim application as well as the writ petition be listed before the roster bench on July 12". The bench was hearing a petition filed by the TV channel which sought a direction to Prasar Bharati not to insist on the live signal of the ICC Trophy without any commercial. On Apri 6, in a communication to ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd, Prasar Bharati had said "it is not in a position to share the live signals which are not clean" and insisted the channel provide the feed of the matches without any commercial.

West Indies bank on Gayle, Narine star power
New Delhi, June 6 The Caribbean team, which won the title in 2004 besides finishing runners-up in 1998 and 2006, is high on star power with the intimidating presence of an in-form Chris Gayle being a massive confidence-booster. Pakistan, on the other hand, is a team full of greenhorns despite being led by the oldest player in the event -a 39-year-old
Misbah-ul-Haq. A look at the line-ups would make the West Indies slight favourites for tomorrow's match. Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and Kemar Roach have the ability to just knock out the opposition attack with their power-hitting. In fact, the troika of Gayle, Pollard and Samuels displayed good form at the recent IPL and would be looking to carry the confidence into the Champions Trophy even though the format would be different. Skipper and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is another player who can be a match-winner on his day. Gayle's aggregate of 695 in Champions Trophy matches is the highest among all batsmen. On the bowling front, the outfit has quite a few tricksters in the line-up, including the surprise package of pacer Jason Holder. The youngest in the team is 6' 8" tall and could prove to be a decisive factor in the seaming conditions with his medium pace. Among the slower bowlers, Sunil Narine has been a proven performer.

League needs big investors: Prasanna
New Delhi, June 6 Adding more drama to the spot-fixing drama, it was today revealed that Rajasthan Royals co-owner Kundra lost a lot of money while placing bets during IPL matches. Asked if the game should have a place for businessmen, Prasanna said they were indispensable for events such as IPL. "In an event like this, huge amount of investment is required. You do require people with lot of money and I expect money is hoarded by business people. There presence is required in these events," Prasanna said. However, the former spinner said people like Kundra should be satisfied with the money they already are making through their association with the IPL. "If they are investing money knowing that they will get an X amount of money in return from the Board, they should accept it. This is beyond that," Prasanna said.

Serena, Sharapova reach final in contrasting style Paris, June 6 The American world number one ran away with the match in 46 spellbinding minutes as she completed the most one sided semi-final win at the claycourt grand slam since compatriot Chris Evert whitewashed Camille Benjamin 6-0 6-0 in 1984. Williams, who owns only one Suzanne Lenglen Cup among her 15 grand slam trophies, left the Italian down and out after producing 40 screaming winners as she set up a final showdown with defending champion Maria Sharapova. Errani won only 16 points in the entire match and did not even manage to muster a winning shot until the 10th game of the contest. Defending champion Maria Sharapova bludgeoned her way past Belarussian third seed Victoria Azarenka 6-1 2-6 6-4 to reach the final. The Russian second seed, who will take on world number one Serena Williams or Italian fifth seed Sara Errani, served 12 aces and 11 double faults in a see-saw contest. The four-times grand-slam champion dropped serve in the first game before racing through the opener in less than half an hour, spraying Court Philippe Chatrier with forehand winners. Double Australian Open champion Azarenka hit back to take the second set but lost her momentum after a 30-minute rain interruption, Sharapova wrapping it up on her fifth match point after two hours 10 minutes. Hradecka and Cermak mixed doubles champs The Czech Republic's recent run of tennis success continued at the French Open when Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak claimed the mixed doubles title. The country already holds the Davis Cup and Fed Cup team trophies; Hradecka/Cermak gave the nation another reason to rejoice with a 1-6 6-4 10-6 (champions tiebreak) win over France-Canada duo Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor. Hradecka brought up match point with an ace but after the Czechs had squandered their first attempt to close the match, Mladenovic dumped the ball into the net to hand the Czechs victory. — Agencies |
Woods reclaims world’s best-paid athlete tag
London, June 6 The American returned to the top of golf's rankings in March for the first time since October 2010. A number of sponsors had abandoned Woods after he was involved in an adultery scandal that broke in 2009 but sportswear company Nike was among those that stood by him. Woods had topped the Forbes list every year from 2001 until boxer Floyd Mayweather deposed him last year. Swiss tennis player Roger Federer was second in the new list, making more than $71 million since June 2012. U.S. basketball players Kobe Bryant and LeBron James took the next two slots. Mayweather slipped to 14th after fighting only once over the past year. Russia's Maria Sharapova was the highest earning female athlete in 22nd place. Fellow tennis players Serena Williams of the United States and China's Li Na were the only other women to feature in the 100-strong list.

Brazil drop to record low 22nd in FIFA rankings
Berne, June 6 The latest rankings were also hugely embarrassing for Asia, whose highest-placed team Japan were a modest 32nd, with South Korea and Australia the region's only other teams in the top 50. Brazil's low position is a combination of their lacklustre recent results, including four draws in their last six games, and their lack of competitive internationals. Brazil, have spent the last two years playing only friendlies, which earn fewer points under the complex calculation system. There was no change in the top four with Germany, Argentina and Croatia trailing Spain.
