BJP, INLD cosying up?
New Delhi, May 16 Party spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain neither confirmed nor denied the politically significant meeting. All that he said was that it might have been a courtesy call. Sources, however, confirmed that the BJP president and Naqvi reached the hospital around 11.30 am and were there with for almost half an hour. During this “get-well-soon courtesy call”, the leaders may also have exchanged notes on political issues. Notably, Singh’s meeting with the former Haryana CM takes place at a time when speculations about a rift between the BJP and the HJC on issues pertaining to elections to seven Municipal Corporations are doing the rounds. Even though the BJP and the HJC have already decided on a seat-sharing formula for the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, sources say the BJP leadership is finding it difficult to keep pace with Bishnoi’s “style of functioning”. Moreover, while the HJC’s real voter base is yet to pass a real political test, the INLD’s rural-Jat vote bank stands confirmed. The INLD managed to give a good fight to the Congress in the last assembly elections and with the BJP’s urban, non-Jat support, the combination can be quite formidable for the Congress, party sources say. Moreover, shoring up the anti-Congress votes in the state serves another purpose for the BJP. Significantly, after becoming the BJP president for the second time, Singh had indicated that he would like to expand the NDA by adding new allies and the BJP’s growing closeness to the INLD can be viewed in this context. The INLD is a natural ally for the BJP. Beginning during Devi Lal’s tenure, their political friendship continued during Chautala’s tenure as the CM. However, the two allies fell out, fought the 2005 elections separately and lost badly to the Congress . The last Assembly elections also saw the two parties going their separate ways. However, any political significance of this meeting would also have to viewed in the context of the HJC, the BJP’s official ally in the state. |
State paid Rs 1.44 cr to Tulsi
Gurgaon, May 16 The Manesar plant of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) witnessed arson and violence in July last in which a senior company executive was killed and nearly 100 were injured. Following the incident, the company management sacked 500-odd regular workers while around 150 were arrested. The arrested workers are facing trial in a Gurgaon court, and the state authorities had appointed Tulsi as special public prosecutor in August, 2012, to plead the case. In response to an RTI application, the authorities have conceded that Tulsi and his team had been paid approximately Rs 1.44 crore as fees. In a statement issued here, the president of the Gurgaon and Mewat Committee of the All-India Lawyers Union has maintained that the government had engaged the senior advocate to please the Maruti-Suzuki management and create an atmosphere of terror among the hapless workers. The union has further stated that on the one hand, the state government had expressed its inability to release the amount sanctioned for the construction of a court building in Gurgaon, on the other, it was mercilessly spending public money to pay the exorbitant fees to a lawyer. |

Passion to marry another girl lands her in jail
Bhiwani, May 16 The police said the girl had threatened that if she was not married with her classmate, she would either commit suicide or kill her classmate. The two girls study together in a government school at Sanwar village in Bhiwani. The parents of the other girl approached the police and expressed apprehension that the girl could harm their daughter. The police said efforts were made to counsel the girl and they sent her to Child Marriage Protection Officer Harbans Kaur too. But efforts to counsel the girl did not yield any result and the girl, according to police sources, remained adamant on marrying her classmate. The SHO of the Bond police station in Bhiwani said finally, the police got a written complaint from the victim and booked the girl. The parents of the victim girl alleged that the girl had barged into their house on May 9 and threatened to kill their daughter if they did not marry the two. The police produced the girl before the juvenile court from where she was sent to a reform centre. The police action has, however, sent shockwaves among social activists. “It is most insensitive on the part of the police to have sent an adolescent girl to jail instead of handling the case with sensitivity,” said Jagmati Sangwan, national vice-president of the All-India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA). |

Baby cremated as unclaimed without mother’s knowledge
Fatehabad, May 16 The woman, Sukhbir Kaur, had a rude shock today when she went to the nursery to know the condition of her daughter, but could not see even her. The doctors lodged a complaint yesterday with the police that a woman had escaped after leaving her critically ill female baby in emergency, who eventually died. Today, the hospital authorities found that the newborn's mother was admitted in a female ward of the hospital. However, the "revelation" came only after the police had cremated the baby as an unidentified body. It has now come out that Sukhbir Kaur brought her newborn baby to the hospital in a government ambulance with her brother Balwinder Singh and sister-in-law Jasbir Kaur. When the hospital staff took the baby inside the hospital nursery, the woman and her relatives were stopped outside. In a few minutes, the woman fainted outside the nursery and his brother and sister-in-law rushed her to the emergency again, where the doctor on duty admitted her to the female ward. After the newborn died in the nursery and the doctors did not find her mother outside, they called the police and lodged a complaint that the child's mother had left her critically daughter in the hospital. Had the doctors or the police started inquiries, they would have found that the name and address of the mother was entered in the ambulance register, OPD register as well as the indoor register of the hospital. The police did not even wait for 72 hours, a mandatory period in the mortuary for the identification of an unclaimed body, and cremated the child. Dr Mukta Kumar, Medical Superintendent of the General Hospital, said the police should have waited for identification of the body. Shamsher Singh Dahiya, DSP (Headquarters) said the police acted on the opinion of doctors in such cases. |
