Minor's Rape
Girls used to frequent ashram
Chandigarh, May 16
The wife of accused godman Mahavir, alias Sant Ram Rishi, who was arrested yesterday for allegedly raping a minor girl inside his ashram, had committed suicide two decades ago as she was reportedly fed up of his nefarious activities. The self-styled godman, whose ashram was reportedly frequented by many girls, has been associated with several police cases. At the age of 51, he had an inbuilt gym in his ashram and had grown marijuana (bhang) in his backyard.

Panchkula robbery case cracked, three arrested
Panchkula, May 16
The lure of a lavish lifestyle and making a quick buck led four girls to plan and execute the dacoity that took place at Sector 4, Panchkula, on Monday. The police today claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of three of the eight accused.

MC impounds 228 stray cattle

The Municipal Corporation has impounded 228 stray cattle from the municipal limits of Chandigarh during a special stray cattle catching drive, which started on April 10. A fine of Rs 1,23,200 has also been realised from the owners of these cattle.

Akali activists ‘flout’ poll code in Mohali

In what could be termed as violation of code of conduct for the forthcoming block samiti and zila parishad elections, some Akali activists were seen giving residents of Badhmajra village new water connections to lure the voters. Primary students await NCERT textbooks

Even after one and half months of new session, students of elementary classes of the government schools are still waiting for the different NCERT textbooks. Nearly 50% of the text books of various elementary classes have yet not been delivered in government high and middle schools, both in urban and suburb areas.

Redress people’s grievances, DC directs officials
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 15
Officials must redress the grievances of the people and get their work done within the stipulated  period as per the provisions of Right to Service Act, so that they may  not face unnecessary harassment in government offices. If any one found responsible for delay, suitable action under the Civil Services Act would be initiated against him, said Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner here today.

2.65 lakh tonnes of wheat crop procured
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 16
The procurement of wheat has been completed at all the 33 procurement centres set up in the district. Till today, 2.64.683 lakh tonnes of wheat has been purchased by various government and private parties. Over 99 per cent payments have been made to the commission agents, said DC Arun Sekhri.

Two held with pistol, live cartridges

Physically challenged man dies in road accident

A physically challenged man died after being hit by two motorcycles in quick succession at Sector 38-C here today in the morning. The mishap took place at 11:15 am when 47-year-old Avtar Singh was riding a scooter with four wheels (meant for handicapped persons). He was a resident of Sector 41-D, Chandigarh.
