Russian woman's body shifted to Doon Hospital
Dehradun, May 12 Shumilina, a Russian woman, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on May 7. She had gone on a trekking trip to the Auli-Kwaripass-Tapoavn-Jumma-Dronagiri-Bagini glacier and Jhumpka (Chamoli district), but while returning back she died
at Jhumpka. Trouble started for the hospital authorities after her body was taken there for a post-mortem examination. "As the issue concerned a foreign national, the body had to be kept in a mortuary following the orders of the Russian High Commission and the state government. However, as the mortuary is not properly equipped, the authorities, fearing decomposition, approached the government for shifting the body to the Doon Hospital," said Dr RS Aswal, CMS, Doon Hospital. The incident has exposed the lack of facilities at district hospitals. "The government has not been able to fix a major requirement at the hospital. What to speak of other things? A refrigerated mortuary is a major requirement of any hospital, but the Department of Medical Health and Family Welfare has not paid any attention towards upgrading it," said a senior doctor. Doctors at the Gopeshwar hospital spent several hours trying to figure out how best to keep the body free from decomposition after conducting the postmortem, "We had to ensure that the body was preserved properly so that it could be handed over to her family in a proper condition. Once we were granted permission to shift the body to Dehradun, we heaved a sigh of relief," said a senior doctor. |
PFA worried over filthy conditions at Corbett Tiger Reserve
Dehradun, May 12 In a letter to NTCA member secretary Rajesh Gopal, People for Animals Uttarakhand member secretary Gauri Maulekhi stated that Jim Corbett National
Park is fast turning into a garbage dump due to accumulation of polythene bags and other items left out by the tourists in the park. “Over 2 lakh tourists visit the Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) every year. People who enter the CTR consume eatables and other products. Bottled water, packaged food, and toiletries are made available
at all forest rest houses in the CTR. The amount of plastic and other form of garbage generated in the park is huge, but there is no system for their disposal,” Maulekhi said. She said tourism infrastructure must conform to environment-friendly conditions as per the NTCA guidelines issued under the Wildlife Protection
Act, 1972. “There should be a complete ban on burying, burning or otherwise disposing non- biodegradable or toxic waste in and around the reserve. A proper plan for disposal of degradable waste must be formed and strictly implemented,” Maulekhi said. She claimed that the CTR authorities had never adopted any scientific garbage disposal method to dispose of the accumulated waste from the reserve. “Tonnes of non biodegradable garbage are dumped in holes near the forest rest houses. The open dumps attract wild animals which turn to scavenging at these dumps,” she said. Significantly, many rhesus macaques have become dependent on these garbage dumps for food thus, leading to more man-animal conflicts at the rest houses. Maulekhi has asked NTCA member secretary Dr Rajesh Gopal to take appropriate action on the
matter taking into account the violation of the NTCA guidelines. |
Manch opposes wheat, rice quota reduction
Dehradun, May 12 Manch president Nanda Ballabh Pandey said the government had shown that it stood by the wealthy not the poor. "The slogan of the Congress, 'Garibi hatao', is actually meant to eliminate the poor not poverty. The government will have to give a reply to the public on this issue in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections," he said. He said they would expose the shortcomings of the state government before the masses. Pandey said all organisations of statehood agitators would oppose the state government in the Lok
Sabha election. President of the Uttarakhand Rajya Andolankari Congress Jitender Chauhan said, "There should be transparency in the identification process of statehood agitators and the files concerned should be cleared without
any delay. The government must announce a separate treasury section for the disbursement of pension to statehood agitators. It must give top priority to statehood agitators in the matters of financial assistance, fielding in the elections and disbursements of allowance or
BPL cards." |
Diarrhoea, fever cases on the rise
Dehradun, May 12 Doctors say that change in weather conditions is one of the reasons behind the increase in the number of cases. At the Doon Hospital, 10-15 patients with symptoms of vomiting and dehydration are being treated on a daily basis. “The symptoms of vomiting and dehydration should not be ignored in summer. The body has to be replenished with water periodically,” said Dr Navjeet Bedi, Emergency Medical Officer, Doon Hospital. Diarrhoea and vomiting can prove fatal for infants and children as they have poor body resistance. “Unhealthy surroundings and consuming contaminated food and water are the main causes of the diseases. The bacterial and virus infections have to be treated cautiously,”
said Bedi. |
