No study of environment issues done for plant: Coca Cola
Dehradun, May 5 A corporate term ‘due diligence’ refers to voluntary investigations made into all aspects of the subject by a company before entering into a contract. Anoop Nautiyal, a resident of Dehradun, had made a query to Coca Cola on its website primarily to know whether it had undertaken a due diligence exercise linked to environment before signing an MoU with the state government for setting up a Rs 600 crore plant at Vikasnagar, particularly when it would use a large amount water from the Yamuna. Coca Cola in a brief response to Nautiyal’s query denied doing any due diligence exercise before entering into an MoU with the state government. The reply thus showed that the company did not find it appropriate to take environment concerns into consideration before deciding to set up a project that would consume a large amount of Yamuna water. Nautiyal says it is unbecoming of a company like Coca Cola not to go for a due diligence exercise before signing an MoU for setting up a big plant at Vikasnagar. Interestingly, the proposed plant at Vikasnagar has already become a subject of confrontation between the state government and environmentalists. While the state government has been claiming that the plant will create large scale employment opportunities for locals, environmentalists say it will be detrimental to the environment of the region, particularly the Yamuna. Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Forest Research and Education (ICFRE) has expressed its willingness to carry out studies, if approached by the state government, on the impact of the beverage plant on biodiversity in the region. “Since the region gets ample rainfall the question of water scarcity does not arise, but still we can do an overall biodiversity study, provided the state government approaches us for it,” said Dr VK Bahuguna, Director
General, ICFRE. |
