No study of environment issues done for plant: Coca Cola
Jotirmay Thapliyal
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 5
Coca Cola has denied that it has done a due diligence exercise with regard to environment before signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttarakhand government for setting up a plant at Vikasnagar in Dehradun.

A corporate term ‘due diligence’ refers to voluntary investigations made into all aspects of the subject by a company before entering into a contract.

Anoop Nautiyal, a resident of Dehradun, had made a query to Coca Cola on its website primarily to know whether it had undertaken a due diligence exercise linked to environment before signing an MoU with the state government for setting up a Rs 600 crore plant at Vikasnagar, particularly when it would use a large amount water from the Yamuna.

Coca Cola in a brief response to Nautiyal’s query denied doing any due diligence exercise before entering into an MoU with the state government. The reply thus showed that the company did not find it appropriate to take environment concerns into consideration before deciding to set up a project that would consume a large amount of Yamuna water.

Nautiyal says it is unbecoming of a company like Coca Cola not to go for a due diligence exercise before signing an MoU for setting up a big plant at Vikasnagar.

Interestingly, the proposed plant at Vikasnagar has already become a subject of confrontation between the state government and environmentalists. While the state government has been claiming that the plant will create large scale employment opportunities for locals, environmentalists say it will be detrimental to the environment of the region, particularly the Yamuna.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Forest Research and Education (ICFRE) has expressed its willingness to carry out studies, if approached by the state government, on the impact of the beverage plant on biodiversity in the region. “Since the region gets ample rainfall the question of water scarcity does not arise, but still we can do an overall biodiversity study, provided the state government approaches us for it,” said Dr VK Bahuguna, Director General, ICFRE.

Sanjay Bhatt, district coordinator of the Aam Aadmi Party, said the honour of the country was at stake and all parties should urge the government to deal with it in a no-nonsense manner and keep politics out of it.

Talking to TNS, Anuradha said she hailed from a poor family and had suffered many hardships in her life.

She always wanted to do something big in her life. Her family did not have money or resources but only moral support which was more important for her, she said.

“I knew that only hard work is the ladder to make my dream come true. Many times, I did not even have money to buy books and pay for my engineering and civil services exams coaching. But thanks to the Almighty and parental support that these did not affect my studies,” said Anuradha.

After completing her schooling from Aurangabad, she appeared for the engineering examination of Pant Nagar Engineering College, where she opted for electronics stream. After completing her BTech, she desired to become an IAS officer.

However, owing to financial constraints, she started teaching at the College of Engineering, Roorkee, and started preparing for the civil services exams.

Anuradha said after three years, she realised that professional coaching was also important to crack the civil services exam as in her maiden attempt she couldn’t qualify.

She moved to New Delhi for preparations and started taking tuitions to afford the coaching, study material and rent expenses. And in her second attempt, she managed to crack the premier examination.

Her proud father Satish Pal said Anuradha was not a girl but a boy for them. She never asked for anything except money for books.

Her mother Santlesh said Anuradha had made her village as well as the entire state proud.

As Anuradha arrived at her ancestral home from Delhi, she was given a grand reception with musical bands.

Her uncle Dhani Ram said she had set an example for all village girls and boys.
