Only one teacher for 175 students in primary school
Haridwar, May 6 The student-teacher ratio in the school is also surprising. There is only one teacher to teach a total of 175 students. She is also acting-Principal. Riyaz Fatima says to teach such a large number of students on a daily basis is a herculean task. She said one teacher retired last year and since then she had been managing the school. Fatima said: "I will also retire next year. Many a time, my health does not allow me to come to the school. But I cannot take leave as it's a matter of students' future. I have to make sure that at least the school opens on a daily basis. Despite writing to education officials several times, no new appointment has been made
so far." Social activist Tripta Sharma said as per government directives, schools should have at least 40:1 student-teacher ratio. However, in this school only one teacher was taking care of 175 students, which was not an easy task. Tripta said in this situation, it was very difficult to pay attention to every student. Fatima said the school rooftop had damaged in the rains two years ago. It had not been repaired so far. To add to the problems, there was no electricity in the school. Local people also tried to collect funds for the repair of the school building, but a sufficient amount could not be collected, as most of the students here belonged to poor families. Fatima said with an increase in the temperature, it had become difficult for the students to study in the open. They are being forced to take shelter under a huge tree on the school premises. Many students were also falling ill due to this, she added. She said the situation would worsen during the monsoon, which would also hamper the
academic activities. Mohsin Ali, a parent, said children were the future of the country, but it's quite ironical that lakhs were being spent on the security of ministers and the government had no time and funds to repair a
school building. Siksha Samiti, a parents' association, has also written to the Director, Uttarakhand Education Department, in this
regard and brought the matter to the notice of Jwalapur MLA Chandrasekhar Bhattewala. Primary education officer Krishna Uniyal said since the matter had been brought to her notice, she would look into it and take necessary
action. |

The exhibition also covers various other facets like marine, coastal, forest, microbial, agro-biodiversity and their linkage with livelihoods, besides the challenges of conservation. The eight coaches showcasing India’s rich biodiversity have been conceptualised and designed by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE). The Science Express is being looked at as an opportunity to mobilise and interact with teachers and students to have a feedback, motivate them to take up action projects in their schools, train teachers to guide their students in a better manner, and recognise some good work being done by such schools. At the halts, a number of other activities are also planned to ensure the active participation and involvement of the audience in the conservation of the country’s biodiversity. Congress councillors protest removal of Oppn leader’s chamber on day 1 of DMC
Dehradun, May 6 Kumar expressed ignorance and sent for Executive Engineer Ravi Pandey, who said he had executed the orders of the “higher-ups” but hesitated to take any names. Kumar was displeased that he was not contacted in the matter and suggested Pandey to be sensitive towards political matters. The delegation of veteran Congress councillors, led by Jagdish Dhiman, Dr Vijender and Vinay Kohli, threatened to complain about the matter to the Chief Minister and resign if the matter was not resolved within two days. Kumar’s assertion that the structure would be erected again did not pacify them. They were also miffed that most of the chairs in the councillor’s room were missing and said instead of giving them a warm welcome, they were insulted on the first day at the corporation. Kumar said he would conduct an inquiry into the matter and punish the responsible officials for the lapse. He said he would not let anything disturb the atmosphere of DMC. Regarding building the chamber, he changed his stance, saying he would consult the people concerned and take the
final call on it. Mayor Vinod Chamoli said, “In the first DMC board, there was no room for the councillors. When this room was allotted, this separate chamber within the room was created without any permission. Hence there should not be unnecessary objections and noise over its removal. The structure was cleared to add more space
in the room”.
