UT babus closed their eyes to violations
Authorities bent rules for Acropolis project of Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s nephew

The UT babus allegedly closed their eyes to the violations done by Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla while raising Acropolis, a project of Mirage Infra Limited. Singla was arrested by the CBI for receiving kickbacks.

Electricity Dept head cashier convicted of Rs 1.64-crore fraud 
Chandigarh, May 6
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Singh Nagpal today convicted a head cashier with the UT Electricity Department of embezzling Rs 1.64 crore.

Promised role in movie, model raped in vehicle 
Chandigarh, May 6
A 30-year-old city-based model was allegedly raped by a Sangrur resident on the promises of being given the lead role in a Punjabi film last night. The victim, who is married, was allegedly raped in a car near Sukhna Lake. She was forcefully made to consume liquor so as to impress the director.

4 killed, 6 hurt as truck collides with van 
Mohali, May 6
Four persons were killed and six sustained serious injuries when a truck collided head-on with a Tata Magic van around 5.30 am near Mauli Baidwan village today. The deceased were identified as Hifazudin and Chulka from West Bengal and Munish Kumar from Ambala. The fourth victim is yet to be identified.

10 liquor vends surrendered
Chandigarh, May 6
Within two weeks of auctioning liquor vends in the city, at least 10 liquor vends have been surrendered by the bidders. Some of the surrendered vends had attracted high bids.

ABVP holds protest against Bansal
Chandigarh, May 6
Representatives of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today organised a protest against Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and the cane charging on ABVP workers on Sunday. Members of the ABVP gathered at the Student Centre, Panjab University, in the evening and demonstrated against the Minister’s alleged involvement in the graft case and the Chandigarh police for cane charging.

Inquiry against SHO for beating up protesters outside Bansal’s house

A day after the police resorted to cane charge on protesting members of the ABVP outside the residence of Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in Sector 28, senior police officials have marked an inquiry against Inspector Anokh Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sector 26 police station.

Four youths injured as car overturns

Bunking their school and going for an outing to Pinjore cost four youths heavily. These youths were seriously injured after the Skoda car in which they were travelling overturned due to over speeding. Overloading continues in P’kula

The rear door of a school van remains unlocked outside a school in Sector 14, Panchkula. Lives of hundreds of schoolchildren are put to risk on a daily basis by the school bus operators who continue to overload buses in the town. A reality check was done by the Chandigarh Tribune, during which students were found packed like sardines in mini vans, school buses and auto-rickshaws, despite the recent issuance of challans by the Panchkula police.

Student fractures leg, others injured as auto overturns
Mohali, May 6
A ten-year-old Jaspreet Kaur, a student of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, suffered a fracture in her right leg when the auto-rickshaw she was commuting in, with other students of different schools of Chandigarh, overturned at Daun village here this afternoon.

UT notifies state advisory council

Chandigarh, May 6
After a series of meetings, the UT notified the state advisory council under Section 34 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and will soon be issued in the official UT Gazette. The council, consisting of 15 members, will advise as well monitor the implementation of the provisions of the Act in an effective manner.

Panjab University not to re-conduct maths exam

Taking a U-turn over its decision on re-conducting BA, BSc second-year paper-B of mathematics on May 11, Panjab University today decided that it will not re-conduct the exam now.

Several expelled guest faculty and contractual teachers again staged a protest for several hours near Sector 17 here against the Education Department’s inaction to re-employ them. A teacher said they would continue to protest till the time the department would not adjust them.

Fatehgarh Sahib, May 6
86 candidates filed nominations for panchyat samiti and 8 candidates for zila parishad elections here today. Hectic political activity was witnessed at Fatehgarh Sahib today as both the major political parties SAD(B) led by Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra and Congress led by Kuljeet Singh Nagra, MLA,organised the gatherings of their supporters before filing the nominations . Prof Chandumajra addressed a gathering at Sohan Farm House, whereas supporters of the Congress had gathered at the office of the MLA.

Saying no to defacement on the Panjab University campus, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today put on notice student leaders of all organisations. The notice was issued during the resumed hearing of a suo motu contempt petition after justice Rajesh Bindal expressed displeasure over the defacement of public property.

Rape bid: Evidence recorded

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Shalini Nagpal, today recorded evidence against a 56-year-old man in a rape attempt case of a minor girl today. Both the victim and her father, who was the complainant, turned hostile in the case.

Rare species of turtle recovered, accused arrested from residence
Chandigarh, May 6
A tortoise recovered from a house in Sector 34, Chandigarh, on Monday. The UT police today recovered a rare species of turtle from a house in Sector 44. The police received a complaint from Gaurav Gupta, In charge, Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, that they had received a secret information regarding a person Deva Malhotra, resident of Sector 44-D, who was keeping an Indian Tent tortoise, which was an endangered species, in his house.

Traders booked for submitting forged VAT returns
Chandigarh, May 6
The UT police has registered separate cases of cheating against 12 traders for allegedly submitting forged VAT returns. The cases were registered at the Sector 17 police station. The case has been registered on a complaint of UT Excise and Taxation Department lodged five months ago.

Carver again elected carrom body chief

The Chandigarh Carrom Association has unanimously re-elected Harold Carver, Director-Principal of St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, as its president. During the general council meeting of the association at St Stephen’s School here today, Mahesh Sekhri, manager, Punjab National Bank, and Malik Singh Kang, too, were re-elected as the general secretary and senior vice-president respectively. City lad stars in inter-school cricket tie
Chandigarh, May 6
Angad Bir Singh (17), a Class XII student of The Lawrence School, Sanawar, hogged the limelight with a 217-run knock during an inter-public school tie at YPS, Patiala. A local resident, Angad scored his individual best, studded with 11 sixes and 29 boundaries in a T20 match against Woodstock School. His team won the match by 189 runs after scoring a total of 290 runs in the allotted 20 overs.

AEC club beat GMCH-32
Chandigarh, May 6
AEC Cricket Club, Sector 16, defeated Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, by 23 runs during a T20 tie at the Sector 16 stadium today.
