MC puts nine commercial establishments on notice

Youth's mutilated body found
Ludhiana, May 6
Panic spread in and around the Dholewal Army Cantonment area after the mutilated body of a youth was found on the roadside here today. Commuters spotted the body and raised the alarm.

Mayor cancels auction of multi-level parking

Water samples of 127 schools in district fail purity test
Ludhiana, May 6
As many as 127 water samples of government and government-aided schools in the district have failed the purity test conducted by the district Health Department. Disclosing this, the medical officer of the school health programme for Ludhiana district, Dr Gurmeet Singh, said, "The Health Department collected water samples of 468 government and government-aided schools in the district.

Gastro cases up as mercury soars

City residents are feeling the heat as the mercury has crossed the 38°C mark. Dry and hot weather is making people uncomfortable. Cases of gastroenteritis have started pouring in at city hospitals and clinics.

Motorcyclist hit by truck, dies
Ludhiana, May 6
A 34-year-old motorcyclist was killed after being hit by an overspeeding truck at the Dholewal bridge here today. The deceased has been identified as Alok Kumar Nigam, a resident of Model Town Extension.

Consider proposal for upkeep of Shaheed Sukhdev’s house, DC told
Ludhiana, May 6
The ancestral house of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar in Ludhiana. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Ludhiana, to consider a proposal of the Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust for the maintenance, upkeep and preservation of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar’s house, which has been notified as a historical monument.

Dept challans 20 for violating tobacco Act
Ludhiana, May 6
A health inspector challans a roadside vendor for selling tobacco products near an educational institute in Ludhiana. A team of the Health Department from the Community Health Centre, Sahnewal, has challaned 20 persons under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Control Act Dr Parvinder Pal Singh Sidhu, Senior Medical Officer, Sahnewal, said: "Under Section VI of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Control Act.

Complaints against schools on the rise
Ludhiana, May 6
Complaints lodged by parents against schools in the city have witnessed increase in the recent times. Sore over the "high-handedness" adopted by certain schools, the parents gave written complaints against two more such schools in the city, to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (general), Neeru Katyal, here today. Katyal has marked an enquiry into both the cases and she has asked JP Singh, Assistant Commissioner Grievances, to submit the reports.

Members of the Dr Ambedkar Ekta Mission, Punjab, and the Bharatiya Valmiki Dharam Samaj meet DCP Harsh Bansal over the controversy surrounding a Hindi film, “Shootout at Wadala”, in Ludhiana on Monday. Day after the Commissioner of Police, Ishwar Singh, banned the screening of a Hindi film "Shootout at Wadala" following angry protests by activists of Dalit organisations, the film producers today expressed regret and apologised for causing inconvenience to the community.

Poets, writers remember Batalvi
Ludhiana, May 6
Poets participate in a function organised by the PAU in memory of Shiv Kumar Batalvi in Ludhiana on Monday. On the 40th death anniversary of Shiv Kumar Batalvi, intellectuals, poets, writers and university professors from the city discussed the life, poetry and contribution of legendary poet, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, to literature at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here today.

Rework on road-widening proposal, RITES told
Ludhiana, May 6
The officials of Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) Ltd have been asked to rework on their proposal to widen the Ferozepur Road-starting from the Jagraon Bridge till Sidhwan Canal. They have been asked to properly prepare a proposal for the widening of Ferozepur Road and discuss it before May 31.

PAU slashes paddy seed rate
Ludhiana, May 6
In view of the concern expressed by the Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) over the use of non-recommended paddy varieties in the Punjab state, the University has decided to make the seed of the rice varieties available to the farmers at appropriate place and at reasonable rate.

African delegation visits PAU

To gain in-depth understanding of farm mechanisation, a 16-member delegation from African countries, including Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe, visited the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAE&T) of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today.

Punbus contract workers' strike enters 10th day

The indefinite strike launched by the Punbus Contract Workers' Union in support of their long pending demands entered its tenth day today. The members of the Punbus Contract Workers' Union also held a demonstration against the Punjab Government at Jagraon Depot of Punjab Roadways.

292 file nomination papers for ZP poll
Ludhiana, May 6
As many as 292 candidates filed nominations, with their respective returning officials, for the up coming zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections. Out of these, 250 candidates filed nominations for panchayat samitis and 42 candidates filed papers for zila parishad elections.

No headway in Sachin kidnapping case

The police has failed to make any headway in the case pertaining to 18-year-old Sachin Gupta, who was kidnapped from outside his house in Basant Avenue near BCM School, Dugri, on Saturday night.

Woman killed, 15 injured in road mishap in Jagraon
Jagraon, May 6
A middle-aged woman was killed while 15 other passengers were injured including some critical, when a tempo (Tata Ace), they all were traveling in, rammed into a roadside tree near Gidarwindi village, situated around six kilometers away from Sidhwan Bet today afternoon. The deceased woman has been identified as Shinder Kaur (45), a resident of Gonspur village.

Two killed in road mishaps in Phillaur
Phillaur, May 6
Two persons were killed in two different mishaps near Phillaur here last night. In the first incident, a villager was killed after a speeding truck hit him near his Zand village in the Phillaur subdivision. The victim has been identified as Naresh Kumar. The truck driver managed to escape after the incident.

Blood donation camp held
A blood donation camp was organised by Bhai Ghanaiya Mission Sewa Society at Gurdwara Kalgidhar Singh Sabha. Taranjit Singh Nimana from the organisation said that the prime motive of the camp was to spread the thought of service of the humanity. Over 226 units of blood were collected during the camp, which would be distributed to different hospitals, according to their requirements in the city, he said.

Man robbed of valuables, thrown out of moving truck in city
Ludhiana, May 6
Armed assailants posing as a patient’s relatives robbed a man and threw him out of a moving vehicle near Ladhowal here last night. The incident came to limelight when the victim reported the matter to the police. The victim, Amarjit Singh, said last night when he was returning home on his mini-truck, four persons stopped him on the pretext of taking a patient to the hospital.

Delhi resident held on kidnap charge
Ludhiana, May 6
The accused, Amit, in police custody in Ludhiana. The city police arrested one person, named Amit, for purchasing the new born child from a nursing home in Jodhewal Basti area on April 10. Amit, a resident of Rajinder Nagar in Delhi, was nabbed by police from district court complex, while he was visiting the city to apply for anticipatory bail.

Two held for vegetable vendor's murder
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 6
The Sudhar police claimed to have solved a blind murder case of a vegetable vendor, Shree Parshad, a resident of Mohi village, whose body was found on the Ghuman Mohi road on February 20.

 


 

Players rue poor sports facilities
Ludhiana, May 6
The Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister, Punjab, claimed to provide the best sports infrastructure in the state, but the ground realities contradict the same. Lack of concern of state government buildings and poor condition of the grounds at the sports complex of city, apparently prove the neglect of the state government . Ironically, the careless behaviour of government proves costly to the players, who practise hard with dedication in order to bring laurels for the state.

Amandeep Kaur, a budding girl trainee of Shere Punjab Sports Academy, Chakar, near Jagraon, emerged as the state champion during 14th Senior Punjab Women Boxing Championship, concluded recently at the Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar. Amandeep Kaur, who is a student of Sri Ram College, Dalla, clinched gold medal in the 81kg weight category of the boxing championship.

Khanna girl excels in boxing
Khanna, May 6
Mirdula Chhabra won a silver medal in the 58th National Boxing Championship organised by the School Games Federation of India in Andhra Pardesh. she represented Punjab in 75-81 kg group in U-19 category. Mridula is a student of AS Modern Senior Secondary School, Khanna.
