PPCB team visits Leather Complex
Removes common outlet connection with storm water sewerage
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, May 2
Following the publication of a report, "No check on tanneries discharging untreated waste into Kala Sanghian", in these columns today, a Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) team paid a visit to the Leather Complex on Kapurthala Road.

Giving details, Environmental Engineer, PPCB, SP Garg said during the visit, he noticed that the common outlet for the discharge of the untreated waste of the tanneries was connected with a storm water sewerage. The PPCB officials said the common outlet should have been going only to the treatment plant. But because of the common outlet connection with the storm water sewerage, some part of the untreated waste was being discharged into the Kala Sanghian drain.

Subsequently, the PPCB authorities got the common outlet connection with the storm water sewerage disconnected by getting it plugged manually by labourers. "The hearing of the Punjab Effluent Treatment Society (PETS), which manages the treatment plant, with the PPCB has already been fixed for May 6. During the hearing, we will ask PETS to explain their position in this regard," said Garg.

Chacha Raunki Ram goes ‘Young Malang’
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, May 2
The man who provided a constant supply of well-meaning, rooted and intelligent humour to a generation of TV watchers and radio listeners in Punjab, is back with his second stint - this time for the silver screen - delighting fans who were awaiting to catch a glimpse of him.

As crew members of upcoming film "Young Malang" gathered to announce the film here today, the film especially flaunted its greatest asset - veteran actor Balwinder Vicky - who would be making an appearance after many years, remembered for his rural Chacha Raunki Ram avatar.

Creative producer of the film Rahulinder Singh, while speaking to mediapersons here, said, "Young Malang is an interesting script based on college romance and comedy. The film depicts the phase in youngsters' life when they are complacent and in no mood to run after material comforts or wealth. They are free of the love of materialistic pleasures and in more of a mood to live a free life like saints, hence the name Young Malang."

Along with veteran comedian Balwinder Vicky, the film will also see three young couples. The male leads are being played by Yuvraj Hans, Balli Riar and Vinaypal Buttar (all of them singers, have also lent their voice for the film) and the female leads are being played by Anjana Sukhani, Neetu Singh and Anita Kailey.

While the film is currently being shot, it is slated for an August release.

The producer said since Jalandhar was close to Vicky as well as the film director Rajdeep Singh's heart, the makers had chosen to begin its promotion from the city.

Speaking on the occasion, actor Balwinder Vicky said, "This is the city where I was born and brought up and started my journey as an actor. It will always be closest to my heart. So we thought of introducing the film to Jalandhar first. I have always been doing comedy, but never had a chance to do romance. In this film people will be seeing this side of me. Though, we have made sure that the romance is depicted within the limits of grace and beauty."

Keeping with his characteristic humorous streak and known for calling a spade a spade, the actor whose constructive, clean humour found favour with people from all walks of life binding them, even in the tumultuous days of Punjab, is coming back in the avatar of a professor.

Playing a character called Professor Lathi in the film, Vicky will be playing a fresh, urban and minus-a-turban intellectual who goes out of his way to impress his lady love.

While the film has been shot at Patiala, Chandigarh and Rajpura in Punjab, the crew will also be heading for a final 10-day schedule to Italy.

Interestingly, the film is also sure to promise some great numbers to fans. While its music has been composed by Gurmeet Singh, it has tracks from singers Mika, Javed Ali, Shafqat Amant Ali and all three of its young male leads.

Deserted by husband, amputee seeks financial help
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, May 2
If it was not for some good Samaritans who chose to provide help and shelter to her, Rekha probably would not have survived today. Mother of an eight-year-old daughter, Rekha worked as a domestic servant in households. She had her left leg amputated due to a cancerous wound one of her thighs.

But while some people refuse to give up on her, they are hard pressed for money to continue with her future treatment.

Satnam Singh, who along with social activist Gurmeet Kaur (who originally met her at a hospital and has been helping her with her treatment ever since then), has been tending to her needs and has taken her in and out of various hospitals.

While the mother-daughter duo was abandoned by Rekha’s husband about three years ago, Rekha lives in a small rented shanty. After a minor operation made her situation worse, she visited two more hospitals where she received treatment but the cause of the sore was still not ascertained.

It was finally at the local Patel Hospital that a doctor told her the sore, which had now turned into a big wound, was cancerous.

Orthopaedic surgeon and specialist in bone and joint cancer Dr RR Saggar said, “She came to us four or five days back with a thigh wound which was two to three months old. Her haemoglobin was two. An MRI made it clear that the wound was cancerous and had spread to her entire thigh. So we had to amputate it. While she is out of an immediate danger now, it is only after reports of the leg sample that we will be able to determine whether the extent or nature of her cancer will cause problems for her in future.”

Rekha also suffers from a bloated stomach. Dr Saggar said her stomach had been filled with fluid owing to lack of proteins and reduced liver functioning.

Satnam Singh works as an Assistant Engineer with the Sewerage Department. He has been getting financial help for Rekha’s treatment from individuals and various organizations. He says since hefty hospital charges are going to only increase as her treatment advances, they need sound financial resources to help her.

Satnam and Gurmeet Kaur have so far arranged money from the Jalandhar-based Unique Home and the former’s colleagues at the Sewerage Department among others.

“Rekha started her treatment with her savings. Then little help came in as Rs 30,000 to 40,000 were spent per hospital. I was presently taking 11,000 more for her hospital charges. Now, we will need more,” Satnam said.

Dr Saggar said Rekha’s artificial limb cost will range between Rs 1 lakh to 2 lakh. But while the limb will be needed after about two months, her one month medicine costs will start from at least Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 or even higher depending upon the results of the reports of her leg samples and the fact that she needs lifelong treatment and a protein rich diet for a weak liver.

Those wishing to help Rekha can contact on 93572-06937.
