Help us get rid of pubs, Gurgaon mall managment asks Excise Dept
Gurgaon, March 28 In a communiqué to the Gurgaon Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner Aruna Singh, the mall management has that the liquor licences of Blue Eye Pub, Lovely Obsession Restaurant/Prison Pub and IPSA Hospitality as the operators of these had been illegally occupying the mall premises. “We have already asked the operators of the said bars/pubs to vacate the mall premises and are in the process of initiating legal proceedings against the defaulters. The mall management has earlier restrained some restaurants from converting their premises into pub/bar as it was in gross violation of the lease agreement,” said a statement issued by the Sahara India Parivar. It may be pertinent to mention here that the area surrounding Sahara Mall on MG Road in Gurgaon has been in the news for prevalence of flesh-trade racket, several instances of crime against women and other criminal/anti-social activities. Nearly half-a-dozen pubs/bars are operating from the mall premises and most of them are infamous for having notorious bouncers, escort-girls and midnight brawls. Now, the management of Sahara Mall has maintained that it had tried its best to restrain the pub-owners, but when all efforts to influence the pub-owners to maintain decorum at their pubs went in vain, terminated the lease agreement of three of the five pubs. But the operators of these pubs/bars have not vacated the premises and continue to operate from the mall. In addition to this, the mall management has sent the request to the Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner (HQ) to cancel the liquor license of all pubs operating from its premises to end the nuisance. Several NGOs and residents of neighboring areas have been staging demonstrations from time to time demanding the closure of pubs in view of the nuisance being created by pub visitors and bouncer hired by pub-owners. However, no action has been taken by Excise Department in this regard till date. The mall management has alleged that the pub-owners, due to their influence in government departments, are not only able to retain their licences, but also successful in getting these renewed and getting new ones. The mall management has also written to the Commissioner of Police, Gurgaon, seeking security of visitors, shop-owners, mall management and common facilities of Sahara Mall due to irregularities and public nuisance created by pubs. Moreover, the mall management has requested the society of the adjoining Sahara Grace residential complex and the shop-owners of the mall to come together with them in these efforts to make the place safe for people.
