Independent MLAs joining the Cabinet does not mean that they have merged with the ruling party nor can they be hauled up under the anti-defection law if they subsequently withdraw support to the government, the Supreme Court has ruled.

Govt orders probe into most-wanted list gaffe
Mumbai/New Delhi, May 17
In a major embarrassment for India, a terror accused whose name figured in the list of 50 most-wanted fugitives given to Pakistan has been found to be living in a suburb of Mumbai, prompting the government to order a probe into the goof-up. Wazhul Kamar Khan, whose name figures in the list of fugitives sought by India from Pakistan, has been found staying in Thane’s Waghle Estate with his mother, wife and children. He was arrested last year for his alleged role in the 2003 Mulund train blasts here and was released on bail last year.

Centre likely to file review petition in HC

The Centre is considering filing a review petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court which had, in March this year, ruled that Panjab University, Chandigarh, is neither a Central University nor a centrally-funded varsity.

Dawood’s brother shot at in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 17
Iqbal Kaskar, brother of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, survived an attempt on his life after he was shot at by four men in south Mumbai this evening, the police said. According to initial reports, the incident happened near a restaurant on Pakmodia Street in the Nagpada area frequented by Kaskar.

NATO choppers fly into Pak, fire on troops
Miranshah (Pak), May 17
NATO helicopters from Afghanistan intruded into northwest Pakistan today, wounding two soldiers, officials said, prompting a protest from the military already seething over the secret US operation to kill Osama bin Laden.
The Pakistan army said it had lodged a “strong protest” and sought a flag meeting with NATO commanders over the incursion in Pakistan’s North Waziristan near the Afghan border, which has been repeatedly targeted by US drone aircraft.

India, US to hold security dialogue 
New Delhi, May 17
Within a month of the killing of Osama bin Laden, India and the United States are set to hold their first-ever homeland security dialogue here on May 27.
The Indian side would be led by Home Minister P Chidambaram while the American team would be headed by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

One-rupee sanitary napkin for rural girls
New Delhi, May 17
Rural adolescent girls can now demand one sanitary napkin for one rupee. The Health Ministry has approved a new scheme for easy access to sanitary napkins as part of the menstrual hygiene promotion programme for adolescent girls aged 10 to 19 years in villages. This scheme aims to spread hygiene awareness among girls.
The scheme will work simply. The girls will henceforth get a pack of six sanitary napkins under the National Rural Health Mission’s brand called “Freedays”. A pack of six napkins will cost Rs 6 (Re 1 per piece), and will be distributed by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs).
