Mumbai, May 17
Iqbal Kaskar, brother of gangster Dawood Ibrahim, survived an attempt on his life after he was shot at by four men in south Mumbai this evening, the police said.

According to initial reports, the incident happened near a restaurant on Pakmodia Street in the Nagpada area frequented by Kaskar. The Dawood Ibrahim gang operates from Nagpada.

Kaskar was travelling in a car when two men on a bike intercepted the vehicle and opened fire at its occupants. Two others, who were on foot, also shot at Kaskar, the police said.

One person, believed to be the driver of Kaskar, was killed in the shooting while another man, said to be an associate of the gangster received bullet injuries. Both were rushed to the JJ Hospital nearby.

The two assailants on foot were immediately nabbed by passers-by and handed over to the authorities while the two on the motorcycle escaped, the police said. Initial reports say Kaskar escaped unhurt. However, the police said they are waiting for a further confirmation on his condition, sources said.

Kaskar was extradited to India some years ago and is facing trial for grabbing a plot of land belonging to the Mumbai police. A shopping complex called Sara Sahara has come up on the property.
