Hard work makes a difference AN interesting message sent to me by a friend read: “Success is like a train, it has several coaches, hard work, honesty, focus, luck, attitude, vision but leading all, is the engine of confidence”. This set me thinking, and another friend’s thoughts in the recent past came rushing to my head. Years back, when my elder son was in Class III, I was finding it hard to cope with his studies. I was ruing over the fact that our children are burdened with studies. My friend, after giving me a patient hearing, remarked that the Indian education system is one of the best in the world because it teaches one to sit at a place and have long sittings that augur well in the long run. Yes, it applied to our generation where we sat at our worktables for hours, with short breaks in between, working hard. Since that day, I have set my thoughts in order and have been consistently working with my son. Whenever I feel he is being burdened, I see around me. We all are working hard and hard work doesn’t end at any age. We need to continuously work hard to meet deadlines. And we all do it, thanks to the education system we are brought up in. Working hard has become a habit for all of us. We, Indians, learn early in life that there is no place for “moods” and “luck’ favours only the brave. In fact, our parents and well-wishers do not mention the “luck factor” to children and we learn about it only when we take the competitive exams approximately at the age of fifteen. Before that, it is sheer hard work that matters. Some people argue that the present education system suppresses passion. I don’t believe so. Passion can never be suppressed. If one is passionate about something, one always finds time for it. We have had great artists in India, who have followed a rigorous lifestyle growing in ashrams under the guru-shishya parampara and yet have carved a niche for themselves in the fields that they have chosen. One can succeed and survive by dint of hard work in these competitive times where people working in multinationals are given the “pink slip” at a slight pretext. If we have to work hard and endeavour throughout our lives, why not start at an early age? In retrospect, I looked back at my growing up years. Television was a big “NO” and my parents made it very clear that good marks were my priority as I had nothing else to do. They expected a good performance in studies as well in extra-curricular activities from me as I was getting all the facilities that I needed. They often quoted examples of children studying under adverse conditions and doing exceptionally well in life. Their simple question was, “If such children can do well, why can’t you?” No arguments after that. Our parents’ generation worked hard and put us in the same habit. But we are not doing the same with our children. We are mollycoddling them to their disadvantage. If children these days can play games at PlayStation or watch television for hours, why can’t they put in long hours at their study tables? The latter is going to stand them in good stead in life. Reading as a part-time hobby doesn’t figure as a priority on majority of the children’s do-it list. They don’t read, so they can’t imagine and thus, cannot write qualitative essays. The idiot box further does not let them think. Children have to see what they are shown and not what they would want to see. Studies are tough because the time allocated for studies has shrunk and their day is crowded with too many activities that are not structured. Children like them because they require no hard work or discipline. With the changes that we are bringing in our education system, we should be careful not to lose the essence of hard work, focus and discipline. These traits set the Indian children apart from the others, besides the Chinese, in the world. We succeed where the others give up. It is not without reason that US President Barack Obama said a few years ago to the children in America, “Start studying because the Indians and Chinese are coming”. We take up plum jobs in such countries beating citizens of those countries. Why? We have the answer; we just need to be consistent in it. Let’s not sacrifice “hard work” at the altar of a “happy childhood” for then we grow up into miserable adults. Childhood is always happy because we have our well-wishers with us teaching us such values for a lifetime. Children anyway get enough these days to be happy, imparting them discipline and hard work is our investment for their happy and bright future.

Studying long-term effects of boarding schools CHILDREN sent away to boarding school can suffer psychological damage akin to being taken into care, a leading psychotherapist warns. “Boarding School Syndrome” can leave adults struggling to form intimate relationships and unable to communicate emotions after being traumatised by forced separation from friends and family at a young age. Despite the damage, therapists fail to recognise the significance of boarding school in their patients’ problems because such an education is still regarded as a character-forming privilege, according to Prof. Joy Schaverien in British Journal of Psychotherapy. But no matter how privileged the surroundings or wonderful the education, children who board are left in the care of adults who do not love them — itself deeply traumatising, she warns. And many children in the past suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse from staff or other children, and had no refuge or loved one to confide in. Isolated and confused, children learn to hide how they feel, and “get on with it” — becoming outwardly confident and successful but emotionally retarded adults. James Taylor, 44, a psychotherapist himself, suffered sexual and physical abuse at boarding school from the age of 10. “I had no trust in authority for years,” he said. Professor Schaverien, who identified the syndrome after 30 years of treating former boarders, said: “Children need to grow among people who love them... Things have improved but children are still exposed to regimented lifestyles, loneliness and separation. They often turn into very successful adults — look at the current Cabinet — but they can suffer from a poverty of emotion which deserves attention... Prep school is pretty much bad for everyone; it is not loving to send a young child away.” More than 72,000 children boarded last year; around 20 per cent were 12 or younger, but the number of very young children boarding has declined steeply. In 1996, 501 children aged between four and seven boarded, but that fell to 170 last year. Hilary Moriarty, director of the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA), believes things have improved immeasurably since the introduction of inspections 10 years ago, and that boarding school is best for some children. “I don’t think you would find a single unhappy boarder now because children wouldn’t stay and parents would not keep them there,” she said. According to the BSA, family tradition is still important, but many children now board because parents — working long hours — don’t have the time to spend with them during the week.

Campus Notes MAHARSHI Dayanand University has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Pt. B.D.S University of Health Sciences (UHS), Rohtak, to promote academic and research collaborations between the two institutions. MDU Registrar and UHS Registrar signed the agreement recently in this connection. According to a university spokesperson, both the institutions will work together, especially in the area of medical biotechnology. Under the provisions of the MoU, there will be provision for joint research, academic exchange, and exchange of software as well as related material/components. The UHS Vice-Chancellor, Dr S. S. Sangwan, hailed the signing of the agreement and described it as right step towards facilitating knowledge sharing, which would prove beneficial to the students, research scholars and faculty members of both the institutions. Four books released Good governance is essential for economic growth of a nation, and it is equally important that corruption is kept at bay. In this scenario, it is heartening that the Department of Economics has published four books on such important themes. This was stated by the Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University at a book release function organised here recently. The four books, authored and edited under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the University Grant Commission (UGC), were released by Dr R. K. Chauhan, former Secretary, UGC. These books, published by Intellectual Foundation (India), include Governance Issues and Corruption: A Select Bibliography (Seema Lamba); Development Programmes in India (Ed. Neelam Chaudhary); Kautilya on Governance and Corruption (Eds S.B. Dahiya, Nandita Rathee and Seema Lamba); Governance Issues and Corruption (Eds S.B.Dahiya, Kavita Chakravarty and Nandita Rathee). Narain Singh, former Joint Secretary, UGC, was the guest of honour. Faculty members, research scholars and students were also present at the function.
Workshop on application of
software in research A two-day workshop on "Application of SPPS Software in Research" concluded here recently at the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (IHTM). Dr Radhey Shyam, Professor, Department of Psychology, gave a detailed presentation on research methodology, especially techniques of data analysis. While emphasising the importance of using the correct research design, he said the choice of correct statistical tools and tests was essential in research. Pt. B.D.S. University of Health Sciences, Rohtak A hands-on workshop on Illizarov techniques in the orthopaedics surgery was organised at the Department of Orthopaedics, PGIMS, Rohtak, recently. Dr Mangal Parihar, a well-known expert on Illizarov techniques, conducted the workshop. Illizarov techniques have important uses in non-union of fractures, mal-union, infected non-union, deformity correction, limb lengthening, etc. All the resident doctors of the department concerned attended the workshop. The Vice-Chancellor of Pt. BD Sharma Health University, Dr S. S. Sangwan, who is also a well-known orthopaedic surgeon, emphasised on the correct application of Illizarov techniques for optimum results. Dr N. K. Maggu, HoD, exhorted the resident doctors to learn Illizarov techniques on bone models so that they could easily treat the disorders connected with ortho ailments.
International Nurses Day Around 127 units of blood were collected at a function held here recently to mark the International Nurses Day. The nurses day is observed to pay tributes to the late Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing profession. In 1860, Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St. Thomas Hospital in London, now part of King's College, London. The International Nurses Day is celebrated all over the world on her birthday. During the function, senior doctors called upon the students undergoing nursing courses to take a leaf from the life of Nightingale and inculcate professional values to earn the love and gratitude of patients.
Appointment hailed The faculty members of the PGIMS, Rohtak, have hailed the appointment of Major General (retd) Dr D. P. Vats as Chairman of the Haryana Public Service Commission. Dr Vats, who is an alumnus of the PGIMS, did his MBBS from the institute in 1974 before joining the Army in 1975. The Vice-Chancellor has described it as a matter of pride for the institute. —
