Oz complete fruitful outing
Jaipur September 28 While the Aussie batsmen, barring Simon Katich, Watson and Haddin, could not make much impact, the bowlers saved honours for them by bowling out RCA XI for 122 only. Right arm off spinner Jason Krejza and Young fast bowler Doug Bollinger, both playing first matches here scalped three wickets each. The match was called off at the end of RCA innings few minutes before tea much to the disappointment of spectators, who had turned out almost double in number than yesterday. Except host skipper Venugopal Rao (20), Gagan Khoda (33) and Robin Bist (34), rest of the RCA batting line-up collapsed without offering any resistance. Bist walked off on his own after edging Billinger to Haddin. Four other batsmen, including the openers S. Vijay, V Saxena, Rohit Jhalani and Pankaj returned to the pavilion without opening their account. Gajendra Singh, batting at number eleven after a 5-wicket haul in the pocket against the fancied kangaroos, entertained the crowd with a six and a boundary to the fence. Resuming at the overnight score of 38 for 2, RCA Centre could add only 84 runs to the total. Venugopal could add only two runs before Brett Lee trapped him right in front of the wicket. Gagan Khoda went to hit 33 and looked well settled when he got a beauty out swinger from pacer Peter Siddle. The batting honours went to young Robin Bist, who played a patient knock of 34 and handled the Aussies bowlers well till he lost out to
Bollinger. McCullum bamboozles India A
Chennai, September 28 In reply, the Kiwis were 36 for no loss, when stumps were drawn. Electing to bat first, India lost Sahil Kurkeja (5) early as he was trapped in front by Michal Mason. Shikhar Dhawan (27) and M Vijay (45, 66 balls, 7x4) added 71 runs for the second wicket in 21.2 overs before the innings lost the momentum. The absence of players like S Badrinath (away on duty for Irani Trophy), Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla, who had left for Hyderabad to join the Board President's XI team for the warm up match against Australia, were felt as the Indian-A middle order caved in. Stand-in skipper Suresh Raina (21) and Jaydev Shah (38, 55 balls, 5x4) got starts but failed to build on as the home team crashed from 79 for one to 156 for five. The stuttering team was briefly revived by in-form Yusuf Pathan (44, 63 balls, 4x4, 2x6) and Wriddhiman Saha (25) before they fell to the guiles of McCullum, who broke the back of the innings. Poor shot selection also contributed to India's downfall as some of the players holed out in the deep. Nathan McCullum, who bowled one-end unchanged finished with figures of 30.4-2-90-6 and leg-spinner Watling chipped in with two wickets as the Indian innings ended in 75.4 overs. Play was stopped for about 10 minutes due to bad light with Amit Mishra (23 not out) and Ashok Dinda in the middle with just one more wicket in hand. But the Kiwis did not waste much time and polished off the tail with McCullum trapping last man Sudip Tyagi in front of the wicket to complete his six wicket haul. He bowled two maiden overs. The Kiwi openers Aaron Redmond (31 batting, 4x4, 1x6) and B J Watling (two, batting) played out the overs to ensure that the visitors had the upper hand at the end of the day. Redmond looked positive and sweetly timed his shots, including a straight four, and was not troubled by both the new ball bowlers Dinda and Tyagi. Hoping for a wicket, Raina swiftly introduced double spin attack in the form of leg spinner Mishra and offie Mohnish Parmar. But Redmond was undeterred and even hoisted Parmar for a big six over long on in the eighth over.

Ganguly pins hopes on Venkat
Kolkata, September 28 Hopeful to be retained in India's Test squad for the series against Australia that begins from October 9, Ganguly said Venkat's appointment will give a major thrust to Bengal cricket. When asked whether Venkat will push for his selection in the Test side, Ganguly said, ''Let's hope he tries. I hope to do well (in the Australia series) if selected... If not then let's see,'' he said at a function today. ''Venkat's appointment as the national selector from East Zone is really good. It's a great thing for Bengal cricket. The state will definitely get help from him,'' Ganguly added. The former India captain further asserted that the Aussies might find it difficult to trouble the strong Indian batting without a quality spinner in their ranks. However, the stylish left-hander said the series would be a close one with some close finishes too.

We’re better prepared, thanks to RCA: Siddle
Jaipur, September 28 "We had a good preparation for the Test series. It is a good opportunity to have come here. The bowlers had bowled in different wickets, the batters had some hits in different conditions. So far so good, We are in fine nick," he said after his side's two-day practice game against RCA Centre of Excellence ended in a draw. Siddle praised RCA for the gesture to generously open the facilities at its Future Cricket Academy. "It is a fine gesture by them. The academy has different outdoor surfaces. We batted and bowled in different surfaces which we might just find ourselves in the Test series," he told reporters at a press conference. Asked about the role of pacers in the Test series on slow and turning pitches in India, Siddle said the fast bowlers will certainly have some role to play. "It depends on the conditions at the venues, the nature of the pitch. It is always good for pacers to take some early wickets and then the spinners chipped in later. That is Test cricket," said the 23-year-old fast bowler. On his own role in the series, he said he is looking forward to enjoy cricket if given a chance. "I am looking forward to the series. I am here as fifth fast bowler but if I get any chance to play I will try to do my best and enjoy cricket in India," said Siddle who took one wicket for seven runs from six overs today.

I’m still friends with Symonds, says Clarke
Melbourne, September 28 “When I was given the vice-captaincy, I knew part of that role was making sure you put the team first. The one thing that has probably been misinterpreted is that I didn’t make the decision to send Andrew Symonds home on my own, it was the leadership group,” Clarke said in Jaipur, where the Aussies are playing the Rajasthan Cricket Academy Centre of Excellence team in a practice match. Clarke, who along with Ricky Ponting, coach Tim Nielsen and team manager Steve Bernard took the decision to remove Symonds, said he stood by it since it was in the interest of the team as well as Symonds. “We believed and still believe it was best for the team and best for Symmo as well. I have made clear that I am still great friends with Andrew and I will be until the day I die. I want him back playing because I love playing cricket with him,” he said. Clarke's fledgling leadership was tested in Darwin when he gained first-hand experience of the extra responsibilities that come with the title of Ponting’s deputy. His handling of a difficult situation drew praise from Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland. The 27-year-old player is excited about returning to Bangalore, where four years ago he made his Test debut with a 151, for the opening Test against India. “I want it to feel the same. Four years ago for my debut, it was tough cricket but my mindset was just about absolutely soaking up every chance of playing Test cricket for my country,” he said.

Paes-Dlouhy clinch Thai Open
Bangkok, September 28 The winners played a solid service game and converted two of the four break points en route to their win. Paes, who now has 40 ATP doubles title in his cupboard, had earlier won the Thailand Open along with Australian partner Paul Hanley in 2005. Paes and Dlouhy had joined forces for the first time at Roland Garros in May and have since reached the finals of Halle and the US Open. They also reached semifinals of Wimbledon. Paes praised his partner saying he was learning from him. “It’s always special stepping on the court with Lukas because not only does he complement my style of playing but he’s also teaching me things. It’s interesting that, after playing for so many years, to have a partner who’s also teaching me a few things is really beautiful,” Paes said after the win. “It is special and I think that one of the things I like to do is see my partner win a lot more. This is the challenge for me because I know if he’s winning I’m winning too. I’m trying to step up Lukas, this is the fifth one that he’s won, so now I’m trying to step up his wins because then mine will go up automatically,” he added.

JCT down Dempo
Margao, September 28 Dempo could have won the match, had they utilised the number of chances before them in both the halves but luck did not smile on them. Dempo, who had upper hand in the first half, came near scoring in the 15th minute of the first half when Roberto Mendis Silva (Beto) unleashed a left footer from out side of the box which missed the mark narrowly. JCT shot into the lead in the 17th minute through Brazilain Eduardo. It was a good move initiated by Baljit Sahani, who sent a cross from the left flank to Edwardo who first chested the ball and controlled it well and his rasping left footer found the net to make it 1-0. Stung by an early debacle, Dempo attacked vigorously and come up with couple of splendid opportunities in the 25th and 33 minutes. In the 25th minute Climax Lawrence sent a well measured pass to Ranty Martin whose powerpacked shot was smartly saved by JCT goalkeeper Karanjit Singh. In the 33rd minute Roberto Mendis Silva and Clifford Miranda failed to connect a cross from the left flank by Mboyo Iyomi. In the second half, Dempo had a chance to equalise in the 52nd minute when John Dias floated a cross to Roberto whose header went towards Climax Lawrence who was lurking inside the box but his kick hit the cross bar and rebounded into play. On the counter attack, JCT increased their lead in the 63rd minute through Balwant Singh who after collecting a pass from Baljit Sahani beat Dempo’s substitute goalkeeper Satish Kumar who came in place of the injured Abhijit Mondal. Towards the close of play Dempo reduced the margin in the 78th minute through substitute Nicolau Borges, who came in place of Clifford Miranda. It was a good pass from Roberto Mendis Silva to make it 2-1. Dempo could have levelled the score in the 83rd minute but JCT goalkeeper Karanjit Singh brought off a fine save a long ranger by Sameer Naik. JCT’s defender Anwar was adjudged man of the match for his fine performance.

EPL: Hull City shock Arsenal
London, September 28 Arsenal, who dominated the first half, went ahead after a scrambled own goal came off Paul McShane in the 50th minute, but Hull hit back with an awesome strike from Geovanni after 62 minutes and Cousin's header from a corner in the 66th. The shock result meant Chelsea stayed top with 14 points from six matches, the same number of points as Liverpool but with a better goal difference. Aston Villa, who beat Sunderland 2-1, were third with 13 points and Arsenal fourth with 12. Chelsea and Liverpool maintained their unbeaten starts to the season with 2-0 away wins earlier on Saturday. Goals from Jose Bosingwa and Nicolas Anelka gave Chelsea victory at Stoke City. Manchester United also won 2-0, beating Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford where a debatable penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and a second goal from substitute Wayne Rooney gave United victory. Manchester United, who started the day in 15th place, climbed up the table with their win over Bolton. United made the breakthrough after 60 minutes when referee Rob Styles awarded them a penalty even though no United player had appealed for it. Newcastle United's troubles continued when they lost 2-1 at St James’ Park to Blackburn Rovers. West Ham United also won a lively match against Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Alonso wins dramatic Singapore GP Singapore, September 28 He had said on Saturday he needed a miracle to win and it happened. “Actually, I was hoping more for rain as you can make up quite a few positions in those conditions,” Alonso told reporters after registering his first victory since winning the Italian Grand Prix for McLaren a little over a year ago. “In dry conditions, you can normally only make up one or two positions from where you started or even lose the same number of places.” As the sport’s dramatic first night race unfolded under the floodlights on the Marina Bay street circuit, the only rain that fell was on pole sitter Felipe Massa’s parade after the Brazilian suffered a miserable evening of mishaps to ruin his chances of victory. A disastrous pitstop when the safety car had been deployed after a Nelson Piquet crash on the 15th lap took Ferrari’s title contender Massa from first to last in the blink of an eye. The Brazilian’s misery was compounded when he was slapped with a drive-through penalty for the dangerous stop. Alonso had pitted before the safety car came out and was able to move smoothly up the field and into the lead after two more penalties were handed out to his closest rivals for stopping when the pit lane was closed. The Spaniard then cruised all the way to the chequered flag for a memorable triumph. “I don’t know... without the safety car, I may have finished in the same position,” Alonso added. “The brakes were running too hot all weekend so I came in early and we chose the right tyres for the race. Obviously, all these things worked in our favour.” Alonso, with his future at Renault still uncertain, refused to be drawn into thinking the victory was a turning point with three races left in what has been a fairly miserable season. “We will find out very quickly if the car has improved in Fuji (Japanese Grand Prix on Oct. 12) because we cannot forget that this is a very special track,” he added. “It’s a street circuit like Monaco... corner after corner in a low gear on slippery asphalt. I think on a normal circuit, maybe we can find the potential of the car a little bit better than on a track like here. The car is improving though and we are getting closer to pole position in qualifying and the top teams. But maybe that shows more because we were not at the right level earlier.” — Reuters |

Stokes on her own for FIH post: IOA
Chandigarh, September 28 Suresh Kalmadi, who also heads the ad hoc committee of the Indian Hockey Confederation, says he is not aware how many votes India will have when the general house of the International Hockey Federation meets in Los Angeles in November this year to elect a new president, a female vice-president, three female and two male executive committee members. Vidya Stokes is the lone Indian candidate in the FIH elections. If elected she will become the first Indian woman to hold an office in the FIH. MAM Ramswamy was the last Indian to hold an elected office in the FIH. He remained vice-president for two terms. India will watch the FIH elections with tremendous interest as the incumbent president; Els van Breda faces honorary secretary, Peter Cohen, and the president of the European Hockey Federation, Leandro Negre of Spain in the presidential election. Els van Breda has been the president of FIH since 2001. It is Els van Breda who made no secret of her feelings about the functioning of the ousted administrative set-up in the Indian Hockey Confederation headed by K.P.S. Gill. Gill had made a couple of unsuccessful attempts to get into the FIH as well as the Asian Hockey Federation. Now when the IOA has taken over the IHC, the outcome of the general house meeting in Los Angeles may have a direct bearing on the future of Indian hockey. Vidya Stokes faces the sitting female vice-president, Annabel Dillon of Singapore. For the three seats for female members on the executive board, there are four contestants. Besides the three sitting members - Joke Bougron (France), Anne Ellis (Wales) and Sue Neill (Canada), Renita Gerard (Australia) has also filed her papers. Two vacancies in the men’s section on the executive board have been caused by David Balbirnie (Ireland) and Wolfgang Rommel (Germany), who have decided against seeking re-election. Those in the run are Stephan Abel (Germany), Jan Albers (Holland) and Serguey Checkenov (Russia). Talking about the appointment of Harendra Singh as coach incharge for the mens’ team, Suresh Kalmadi said that his appointment was till the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi. Suresh Kalmadi also promised to take up with the union minister of state for sports, Manohar Singh Gill, about transfer of old equipment of the Tughlaqabad Shooting Range to Punjab. |
Gebrselassie smashes marathon record
Berlin, September 28 Wearing his distinctive yellow vest and yellow shoes, the 35-year-old was inside the required pace from the start and at the halfway stage already 25 seconds faster than his split time last year. Gebrselassie, who opted not to run the marathon at last month's Beijing Olympics because of concerns about the pollution, dropped the last of his challengers with around six kilometres left and his victory was never in
doubt. — Reuters |
Force India duo disappoints
Singapore, September 28 Sutil will start in the 19th position while his experienced team-mate Fisichella will be 20th on the grid under the lights of the Marina Bay circuit. Fisichella's qualifying was compromised following an accident in the final 15 minutes of the third and final practice session last night. The Italian fell foul of the high kerbs through turn 10 and went into the barriers, damaging the front right corner of his VJM01. With just two hours to repair the car between practice and qualifying, Fisichella was only able to run in the final five minutes of the qualifier. However, he could not set a time when a puncture caused him to run wide into turn three and lose his front wing.
