Delhi succumb without fight
Gambhir (91) played the lone hand as Rest of India rout Delhi by 187 runs to lift Irani Cup

Vadodara, September 27
Gautam Gambhir (91) stood tall amid ruins but his teammates could not show the same belligerent obduracy as Rest of India trampled Delhi by 187 runs to lift the Irani Cup with more that one day to spare at the IPCL Stadium here today.

Seven wickets separated Anil Kumble's men from an imminent win while Delhi pinned its hopes on Gambhir to score another 268 runs for an improbable victory. In the end, the miracle Delhi needed never happened and Rest of India shot out the Ranji Champions for 190 in their second innings.

Gambhir waged a grim battle, flaying the Rest of India attack even though his teammates kept coming and going at the other end. He ran down Zaheer Khan through the slips and walked cut fiercely to add salt to the wound.

Gambhir also walked out to thrash Munaf Patel through onside and disdainfully hit RP Singh to find the long on fence.

All along, his partners kept changing at the other end.

Aakash Chopra, who did not open yesterday after having twisted his ankle, took to the field with Virat Kohli in tow as his runner. But the gritty right-hander returned with a golden duck against his name, dragging the first ball he faced, from Zaheer, onto the stumps.

Veteran of many a battle, Mithun Manhas (12) wanted to leave Harbhajan Singh's first delivery of the day but the ball kissed the blade and flew to Rahul Dravid at slips.

Having removed Rajat Bhatia with his previous delivery yesterday, the off-spinner was on a hat-trick but next man in Puneet Bisht (9) foiled the bid.

Harbhajan was exasperate to see the diminutive Delhi stumper getting two lives - first Mahendra Singh Dhoni dropped him behind the stumps and then S Badrinath grassed one at leg slip - but the offie eventually had the last laugh.

Bisht forgot he needed to hang around to lend some support to Gambhir and stepped out to hit Harbhajan out of the park only to see Zaheer getting beneath the ball at mid-on.

Delhi had a tail but Kumble ensured it didn't wag. The Rest of India captain trapped Nanda (1) and castled Pradeep Sangwan (1) before dealing the biggest blow to get rid of Gambhir.

Aussies’ spin frailties exposed
Little known left-arm bowler Gajendra jolts visitors with 5-wkt haul

Jupinderjit Singh
Tribune News Service

Jaipur, September 27
Australian batting line-up's susceptibility to spin was reaffirmed in their very opening practice match against Rajasthan Cricket Association XI when they were bowled out for 228 with seven wickets falling to spin duo of little known Gajendra Singh and irregular bowler Venugopal Rao.

Australia bounced back claiming two early bursts of RCA innings in which they sent back both openers for dismal score of two runs only. Lee and Simon Katich struck with the first ball they bowled.

Their joy, however, was shortlived as vice-captain Gagan Khoda started sweetly timing the ball to the fence. Captain Venugopal Rao supported him well with several dispatches to the ground. Both were not out at 18 and 17 at the close of play today. RCA XI were 40 for 2.

Left-arm spinner Gajendra Singh, a product of Rajasthan cricket Academy, was the bowler of the day as he knocked off five wickets of the Kangaroos, who were clearly discomfortable against spinners. He scalped Aussie stalwarts like Mathew Hayden, Michael Clarke, Ponting and Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson.

But for the 73-knock by Simon Katich with useful contribution of 30 by Shane Watson, 21 by Brad Haddin, the Aussie score would have been quite dismal.

Gajendra Singh troubled the Aussie from the world go. He broke the first wicket partnership of 59 runs between Hayden and Katich, who were going great guns. He trapped Hayden LBW as the burly opener tried to sweep him.

Gajendra got Ponting caught at silly point while went through the defence of vice-captain Michael Clarke. Both these players had attended special session by Chappell during net practice on how to counter spin bowling for last five days.

Later Gajandra scalped the well set Brad Haddin, who ambitiously stepped out of the crease to hit a massive one only to be stumped by Rohit Jhalani

Brief Scores:

Australia : 228 all out ( Katich 73, Watson 30, Haddin 21 , Hayden 16, Gajendra Singh 5 for 58, Rao 2 for 30) RCA XI: 40 for 2.

Aussies seek fresh security advice
Jupinderjit Singh
Tribune News Service

Jaipur, September 27
The Australian cricket team is taking fresh security advice following a blast in Delhi here today. Australian opener Simon Katich told reporters the management was looking into the incident and security fears especially because Australia is scheduled to play the third Test match with India in the national capital.

Katich confessed the Australian dressing room was deeply disappointed at their dismal show against Rajasthan Cricket Association XI particularly because the RCA team was not even a Ranji team. He, however, said all was not lost as the Aussies bowlers would try to fold the opponents early tomorrow to make a statement.

He said there were no devils in the pitch, “The ball was not carrying, the bounce was low but there was not much spin”.

Praising Gajendra he said the young lad was a nice prospect. Interestingly, Gajendra had been practicing with the Australian team for the last one week. It seemed he too learnt tricks to nail them.

Katich said Gajendra bowled well to them in the nets also. He did not agree that Australians were susceptible to left arm spinners, “Your main bowlers , Harbhajan and Kumble are right armers and they have taken wickets against us. Left armers do not effect us specially but they do have the advantage of using the rough parts of the pitch and trouble batsmen.”

Saina crashes out in semis

New Delhi, September 27
Saina Nehwal's semi-final outing in the China Masters Super Series turned out to be a lopsided affair as the ace Indian shuttler crashed out of the event after suffering a straight-game defeat at hands of her new nemesis Zhou Mi in Changzhou today.

Seventh seed Sania, who won the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix gold tournament a fortnight ago, was no match for her Hong Kong rival and surrendered 4-21 19-21 in just 26 minutes.

Zhou had cut short Saina's campaign in the first round of the Japan Super Series event last week.

Zhou will take on local girl Lin Wang in the fight for the silverware. Lin prevailed over compatriot Yihan Wang 21-14 18-21 21-11 in the other semi-final.

Saina, who made it to the quarterfinals of Beijing Olympics, turned out to be an easy prey for sixth seed Zhou as the Indian could not match her opponent in any aspect of the game.

Zhou's played brilliantly at the net play and her smashes left the Indian gasping. The Hong Kong girl registered 11 smash winners, compared to five Saina.

Zhou's winners at the net ware also double the Indian's number. She won 15 points at the net in the entire match, while Saina could manage only seven. — PTI

Odafe brace sinks Mahindra

Margao, September 27
Odafe Okalie’s double strike in the second half guided Churchill Brothers to an impressive 2-1 win over Durand Cup champions Mahindra United in their opening match of the ONGC I-League here today. Churchill, who avenged their Durand Cup defeat, dominated the entire game took the lead in the 61st minute through Odafe Okolie.

Mahindra United found the equaliser in the 85th minute through substitute Sushil Kumar Shinde whose header ended up in the far corner of the net off a free kick taken by Douhou Pierre. Odafe then scored the winner in the 90th minute when he uncorked a 30-yard shot after a Zenith Genius shot deflected and fell on his path.

Churchill Brothers went into attacking mode from the start pushing Mahindra United into their own half for the most part of the first half. They used the flanks well and kept on probing more often with authority putting the rival defense into immense pressure. Odafe Okolie who was marked tightly by the Mahindra defence did manage to elude his markers on two occasions and tried to take a crack at the goal which keeper Subhasish Chowdhury collected in the 27th minute.

However, Mahindra United managed to restore parity much against the run-of-play when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Douhou Pierre, who took the free kick, directed the ball to substitute Sushil Kumar Singh whose header found the net. But Odafe who was in his element again found the net when he fired a 30-yard-shot to find the far post to give Churchill the perfect start and thus avenge their Durand Cup defeat.

London, September 27
Spain striker Fernando Torres recovered his scoring form with two goals in four minutes as Liverpool beat Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The victory put Liverpool on top of the Premier League with 14 points from six matches, at least until Arsenal play Hull City and Chelsea complete their match at Stoke City later on Saturday.

Everton’s misery was compounded when Tim Cahill was sent off 10 minutes from time for a second yellow card -- the 17th player to be sent off in the last 33 Merseyside derbies. Torres, who had not scored on his last six appearances for Liverpool, ended his famine after 59 minutes when he was left unmarked in the Everton box and volleyed home a perfect cross

from Robbie Keane. Four minutes later Keane played in Dirk Kuyt, whose shot was thwarted by an interception by Phil Jagielka but the ball bounced kindly for Torres who lashed it high into the net again giving goalkeeper Tim Howard no chance. Torres thought he had scored a hat-trick three minutes later when he chested down a cross and shot into the far corner, but referee Mike Riley had already blown for a foul by Kuyt.

Everton, who rarely looked like scoring, have now lost all three of their opening home league matches following earlier defeats to Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth. Liverpool in contrast, maintained their unbeaten start to the season after 10 matches in all competitions. — Reuters

Munaf fined for abusing Sehwag
Munaf PatelVADODARA: The BCCI on Saturday fined Rest of India pacer Munaf Patel 75 per cent of his match fees for being involved in an on-field verbal duel with Delhi skipper Virender Sehwag during the Irani Trophy match here. On Friday, Sehwag suddenly left for Delhi in the midst of the Irani Trophy match after lodging an official complaint with the match referee Ravinder Jadeja against Munaf. In a hearing on Saturday, the match referee found Munaf guilty of indiscipline and fined him 75 per cent of his match fees, and served him with a severe reprimand. The altercation took place on the second day, when Munaf abused Delhi opener Aakash Chopra during Delhi’s first innings. When Sehwag intervened, Munaf also abused him, which prompted the star batsman to lodge a complaint. It can be recalled that Munaf was earlier fined 75 per cent of his match fees in a One-day international during the recent tour of Sri Lanka. — UNI

Sehwag returned on ‘medical grounds’
New Delhi/Vadodara: Virender Sehwag on Saturday made it clear that the reason for his abrupt return home midway through the Irani Cup tie in Vadodara was "purely medical" and hit back at his detractors for questioning his commitment. Sehwag, who was captaining Delhi in the Irani Cup tie against Rest of India, said he returned home because of a severe bout of migraine and it had nothing to do with the Munaf Patel incident. Soon after he left for Delhi last night, rumours were rife that poor accommodation facilities and an onfield standoff with rival fast bowler Munaf Patel were the reasons behind the Delhi batsman's abrupt return. — PTI

Umpires give thumbs up to referral system
Dubai:
Several top cricketers may not think very highly of the recently-trialled umpire referral system but 65 of the world's top cricket officials have given a thumbs up to it, saying that the experiment should continue. "There was very positive feedback from the first trial (in the Sri Lanka v India series) and now we want to continue those trials and make a really in-depth analysis of the system," Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires member Steve Davis said. "We need to be open-minded when considering the system and we are committed to being objective and giving it a real good try," he added. The officials met in Dubai this week for an intensive three-day seminar designed to improve teamwork and raise the levels of performance. The meeting was attended by members of the Elite Panels of ICC Umpires and ICC Match Referees, members of the International Panel of ICC Umpires and the ICC Associate and Affiliate International Umpires' Panel as well as the five newly appointed Regional Umpire Performance Managers (RUPMs). "I think it went very well," said ICC Umpires' and Referees' Manager Vince van der Bijl. — PTI
