New Delhi, September 28
Shopkeepers at Mehrauli’s Sarai Market, which witnessed a medium intensity blast yesterday, downed their shutters today in protest against the inadequate security in the area. They said that they would continue their protest till proper security arrangements were made.

Shopkeepers, including owners of half a dozen shops that were damaged in the blast, alleged that there was no security in the area. The police never bothered to patrol or carry out random checks even when the city was on high alert.

Meanwhile, a contingent of armed police has been posted in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Senior police officers were monitoring the situation.

Police presence and patrolling has also been enhanced in other markets of the city. Besides, co-operation of market associations has been sought to ensure security of shoppers as well as shopkeepers.

Teams of Delhi police and some central intelligence agencies continued to look for clues at the blast site, which has been cordoned off since yesterday, even as curious onlookers thronged the narrow lane.

The police has once again appealed to people not to touch any abandoned, suspicious object and inform the PCR immediately.

The first victim in yesterday’s blast, a teenaged boy died when he picked up a black polythene bag containing a bomb. He had picked that up to return it to the two suspected terrorists riding a motorcycle, thinking that they had dropped it inadvertently.

BMW-II Case
Utsav Bhasin sent to jail
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 28
A city court today sent Utsav Bhasin, the 19-year-old son of a Haryana-based industrialist R.K. Bhasin to 14 days judicial custody in connection with the accident involving his BMW car and two motorcyclists, one of whom later died in the hospital.

Utsav had surrendered before the Delhi police yesterday after his bail plea was rejected by the Delhi High Court a day earlier. The police will now produce Utsav in the court on October 10.

Bhasin had approached the court for anticipatory bail after the Delhi police slapped additional charges against him under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Justice Veena Birbal rejected Bhasin’s plea, saying that granting him bail at this point of time may hamper the investigations and he might tamper with the evidence. “The testimony of Mrigank Srivastav (who survived the accident) also points out that it was a fatal accident and Section 304 has been rightly invoked against Utsav by the police, so I am inclined not to grant him anticipatory bail,” Birbal said.

Bhasin, who was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident on September 11, now faces stringent penal provisions as the police has amended the charges against him in the first information report (FIR). Earlier, the FIR had been filed under Sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt and endangering life). Bhasin was driving his BMW car when he hit two men on a motorcycle around 2.40 am near Moolchand flyover in South Delhi. While Anuj Singh, a BPO employee, succumbed to his injuries a day after the accident, Mrigank Srivastava, who was riding pillion, is recuperating.

World Heart Day
India to have 60% of world heart patients in coming years
Our Correspondent

Noida, September 28
Heart ailments’ situation in India is more serious than any other country in the world. The chances of heart attack in India have fairly increased in recent years due to various social and financial factors. According to World Health Organisation’s estimate, 60 per cent of world’s future heart patients will be from India.

And, so, it is very necessary that a nationwide awareness programme and checking (coronary screening) should be launched to bring down the incidences of heart attacks.

These views were expressed by eminent heart specialist, Dr Parshotam Lal, chairman, Metro Heart Institutes.

Dr Lal feels that the central government should plan an effective strategy to check heart ailments in the country.

Recipient of Padma Bhushan and Dr P.C. Roy National Award, Lal said that the incidence of heart attacks has assumed alarming proportions and the number was sadly increasing each day.

Dr. Lal added that according to an estimate, about 6 crore Indians are suffering from blockage of blood vessels.

He informed that Metro Hospital had developed a technique to decrease the blockage in heart vessels through a simple procedure, which is quite affordable. The technique has been named as Metro Coronary Screening.

Indians, Dr. Lal said, were more prone to heart ailments. Moreover, the increasing adaptation of western lifestyle, rising stress, smoking, wrong eating habits, lack of exercise, also play a significant role in increasing the number of heart patients and incidence of heart attacks.

While the risks of heart attack are decreasing in western countries, India is facing just its reverse, said Dr Lal.

This is the reason why we all, including central and state governments, should prepare ourselves fully to check heart ailments and face the future scenario successfully, added Lal.

Prank turns ugly
Engineering student plays prank, sends message to friend about blast. Friend informs police, which carried out a thorough search
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, September 28
A prank played by a fourth year engineering student on his friend, suggesting a bomb blast in posh market of Sector 15 here proved to be costly for him and caused several hours of ordeal for the local police.

Jatin Goyal, a resident of Sector 10, had sent an SMS to his friend, a resident of Sector 10, this morning cautioning him not to go to Sector 15 market as there would be a bomb blast there at 3 pm. The message also advised that the receiver should forward the contents to all. Goyal did not give any details about himself in the message.

The friend who received the alarming message called up police control room of the Delhi police on 100 and informed about the SMS. The Delhi police then conveyed the message to the local police.

The local police immediately swung into action and ordered shops in the markets of Sector 15 to be closed. As a precautionary measure other markets were also searched. The arrival of a huge police force in the market created a panic-like situation.

The Sector 15 market assumes significance as the residences of top district officials, including the deputy commissioner, the district police chief and the district and sessions judges is very near to it.

In the meantime, the police also tired to trace the source of the message. Both the sender and the receiver of the message were identified and questioned.

Following interrogation the police found that the message was a mere prank.

However, district police chief, Srikant Jadhav said that legal action would be initiated against the culprit. He declined to comment further saying that the police was trying to cross-question the culprit from various aspects.

Speed snuffs out promising engineer
Our Correspondent

Noida, September 28
The craze for speed claimed another life, a promising woman software engineer, on Friday night in Noida, while her colleague is struggling for his life in hospital. The victim and her friend were employed as software engineers in HCL’s Sector-60 office.

The girl has been identified as Shalini Singh, 23, originally from Bagpat and her injured friend has been identified as Parth Pani, a resident of Sector-19. He hails from Orrisa.

The accident took place near Sector-23, while the victims were on their way to Shopprix mall on a bike. The bike, reportedly being driven at a high speed, hit a car, which was taking a turn from the cut on the road near the gate of Sector 23.

The occupants of the car, a young couple and their driver, rushed the two to hospital.

CEOs prefer teetotaler new recruits: Survey
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 28
If you are a young aspirant looking for an entry-level executive position in any of the multinationals, you better remain a teetotaler.

Over 55 per cent employers in medium and large industries in private sector prefer teetotaler young boys and girls to recruit at entry levels officers and executives in their establishments because their efficiency, productivity, competence and demeanor is found to be much more endearing over those who are regular consumers of alcohol.

This unique fact was discovered during a recent Assocham random survey of 375 CEOs in medium and large scale industries on “Impact of eating habits on recruitment at entry levels” as 206 CEOs polled expressed their preference for recruiting teetotalers.

According to them, the teetotalers of both the sexes are highly prolific, creative and fastidious in work and accomplish at given time the ambitious targets set for them by bosses in the hierarchy.

Accordingly, most of the companies have already taken a policy decision in their HR department to avoid as far as possible recruiting such young boys and girls that do not observe abstinence from alcoholic beverages as those “who take liquor are often found to be non committal, casual and lethargic”.

Quoting findings of the survey while releasing it here, Assocham secretary-general, D S Rawat said that in the survey it was also found that 45 per cent employers do not make any distinction between teetotalers and non-teetotalers as far as their recruitment policy at entry levels was concerned but they indirectly admit that those whose eating habits are continental, their temperament, patience and perseverance levels are much higher and are found to be tolerant and promote amity within the organisation.

Nearly 30 per cent, i.e. around 125 CEOs even said that teetotalers are found to be not that good in maintaining and establishing liaison and rapport for getting business and promote organisational interests wherever required.

Most of those young boys and girls that occasionally go out and take alcoholic beverages are good at making friends and diversify business interests but this applies only to those who take alcohol occasionally.

But once, one has made alcohol consumption a routine exercise, the efficiency, productivity, creativeness is eroded and recommend that as far as possible, CEOs should recruit those brighter youngsters whose eating habits are not vastly intercontinental.

Rawat said as far as Assocham is concerned, it does not insist on recruiting management trainees, young chartered accountants, business and management graduates who are teetotalers at entry level but if available “we would prefer those who abstain from taking alcoholic beverages as their intake certainly adversely affects the productivity, efficiency and
punctuality”.

New Delhi, September 28
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is presenting a group exhibition of paintings by some prominent contemporary artists, “Kalpana- Masterpieces of Figurative Indian Painting”, at the Terrace Garden of the Taj Mahal Hotel here on September 29. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Dr Karan Singh, president of the ICCR.

Curated by Anjolie Ela Menon, it has works of 14 painters — Jamini Roy, Bhupen Khakhar, Amrita Shergill, Ramachandran, M F Hussain , Arpita Singh, K G Subramanyan, Jogen Choudhary, F N Souza, Anjolie Ela Menon, Krishen Khanna, Manjit Bawa, Tyeb Mehta and Aparna Caur.

The 14 figurative painters who form the core of this exhibition are but a small fraction of the vast spectrum of artistic creativity nurtured in India today. Collectively, their work represents a confluence between tradition and modernity. Yet each of them stands apart for their distinct and unique visual signature and for the manner in which they have individually absorbed and synthesised diverse influences.
An artwork by Ranjeet Kant
An artwork by Ranjeet Kant

According to critics, figurative art has been an inherent part of the Indian aesthetic sensibility and has a hoary past that precedes Mohenjodaro and Harappa. Within this diverse body of extant work, the human figure in its myriad variations has been central to this unbroken continuum of the visual arts from the cave paintings in Bhimbetka to the present day.

“This ICCR presentation — hopefully the first in a series — stands out for celebrating masterly expression of the figurative. This exhibition is also novel in another way. It is an exhibition of beautifully produced reprints that rival the original. This process will certainly make it simpler and more cost-effective to exhibit some of the best specimens of contemporary Indian figurative art and open new channels for exchanges between artists and their audience” said Pavan K Varma , director-general, ICCR.

Metro installs cooling plants for tunnel workers
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 28
In its efforts to provide more comfortable working conditions to its workforce, the Delhi Metro has installed high-tech cooling plants in its under construction tunnels at Central Secretariat-Badarpur stretch.

These cooling plants will provide AC services to workers working 40 feet below the surface and operating tunnel-boring machines (TBMs).

These plants will keep the underground temperature somewhere near 25° Celsius, said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal. Besides, they will keep the shafts and the cutter heads of TBMs cool.

Generally, the underground temperature shoots up to more than 40° Celsius even during winters. Thus, making it difficult for workers to work as TBMs generally shut down operations when temperature crosses the 65° Celsius mark.

Such a cooling plant has already been installed at Jangpura, while another one will come up soon at Udyog Bhawan.

Each cooling plant will have two units, which will cater to four TBMs, scheduled to work on this corridor. Each cooling plant has a capacity of 150 TR (tons of refrigeration).

The first TBM was made operational at Jangpura on September 9. Another TBM will start working soon at the same site. The other two TBMs will be deployed at Udyog Bhawan-Khan Market stretch by November this year.

All tunneling activities on the corridor are expected to be completed by June 2009.

Each unit of the cooling plant has a pump and fan with a capacity of 7.5 HP.

These plants have been imported from Singapore and the pumps have been made in Germany.
