On the 10th day of Mamata Banerjee’s dharna and agitation at Singur, Tata Industries chairman Ratan Tata today announced their decision to shift the Nano motor plant from Singur to some other “safe state”.

Nanda guilty of homicide
New Delhi, September 2
A city court today held Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of former Admiral S.M. Nanda, guilty for mowing down six persons in the BMW hit-and-run case that took place in the wee hours of January 10, 1999, on the Lodhi road in the capital.

Home minister Shivraj Patil will visit the troubled areas of Orissa tomorrow for on-the-spot assessment of ground situation. Violence in the state continued for the 10th day in a row, with no signs of return of normalcy, despite positioning of 33 additional companies of paramilitary forces, including six of the Rapid Action Force.

The situation in Orissa’s riot-hit Kandhamal district continues to be volatile today with at least 80 houses being torched in fresh violence as the government accelerated relief and rehabilitation efforts for which Rs 2 crore have been sanctioned.

The beginning of Muslim's holy month of Ramzan brought a fresh lease of life into Kashmir today and the administration helped matters further by completely lifting the curfew as a goodwill gesture, driving people in thousands to markets as they attempted to bring their lives back on the tracks.

The thermal plant, for which the foundation stone was laid today at Banawala village, near Talwandi Sabo, is the fourth one coming up in the Malwa region and the third in the Bathinda region.
