Centre blames Bihar govt

Purnia: A blame game after the unprecedented floods in Bihar came to the fore with the state government being accused by the Centre of not sending a scheme for works to be executed on the damaged dams on the Nepal section of the Kosi river. — PTI

Guwahati, September 2
The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim with floodwaters inundating more areas. The situation in Majuli in the bosom of Brahmaputra has turned for worse with about 90 per cent area of the world’s largest inhabited river island reeling under floodwaters.

According to an official estimate, floods have so far claimed 15 lives in the state and affected a population of over 10.30 lakh from over 1,100 villages spread over 12 districts of the state. The floods have damaged standing crop on 1.20 lakh hectares worth about Rs 41 crore. The total damaged caused to crop and property has been estimated at Rs 96 crore.

The Assam government has set up about 135 relief camps in affected areas while rescue teams assisted by the Army have evacuated about 27,000 marooned people from different parts of flood-affected areas.

However, relief operations have been hamstrung in Majuli island given that almost all government offices in the area are under floodwaters.
