nearly missed going to Beijing due to two shocking losses
in the qualifying rounds. At the Chicago World
Championships he was knocked out in the second round.
Another stunning second-round loss in the first Asian
Olympic Qualifiers added to his woes. Vijender was also
suffering from a stiff back at the time. |

EVER
since Sushil Kumar struck the 66 kg free-style wrestling
bronze medal in the Beijing Olympic Games, there has been
a ceaseless stream of visitors to the double-storeyed

is an almost theatrical element to the Bhiwani boxers’ recent
tryst in Beijing. An interesting element in the story is a
soldier’s love for boxing in the 1960s, which culminated in
Vijender Kumar’s Olympic bronze. This is also the story of
resilience of the people of this arid terrain who have managed
to succeed in spite of the many odds — poverty, deprivation,
hunger and unemployment — which have plagued India’s
"Little Cuba" for decades.
New breed of
MAGICIANS

of gaudily dressed performers with heavy make-up as stylish

MAGIC no longer
means producing rabbits from a hat or different coloured flowers
from a vase. Magic as an art and form of entertainment has
undergone a makeover with stylish, young magicians dressed in
designer wear, taking the centrestage to cast a spell on the
audience. Ugesh Sarcar and
Shankar Junior are the second generation of magicians who are
taking forward the legacy their fathers had set up but with a
difference.
