Clashes over Srinagar shrine fire, 30 injured

Over 30,000 protesters converged on Jenab Sahib in the Soura area of Srinagar and clashed with the security forces after a fire broke out in the shrine that houses the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad. Thirty persons were injured, including some photo-journalists.

SP pledges support, UNPA cracks
New Delhi, July 5
The Samajwadi Party (SP) today formally announced its support for the Congress-led UPA government, marking the beginning of the disintegration of the fledgling United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA). The SP, which has of late been giving clear signal about its new-found love for the Congress, asserted that it was ready to make any “sacrifice” to keep communal parties out of power.

It is a topsy-turvy world of politics. Friends abandon you on the high seas; and confirmed rivals come to your rescue. Last week’s events in Delhi once again prove the validity of the age-old piece of cynical wisdom that in politics, or in diplomacy, there are no permanent friends or permanent enemies. Only interests endure. Last month, the mood at the Prime Minister’s House was sombre — with little hope left for the nuclear deal with the US to survive.

Jaswant confirms NDA plan to bring down govt last year
New Delhi, July 5
Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh today stirred a controversy when he virtually confirmed that the NDA had planned to bring down the UPA government in July 2007 by offering the Prime Ministership to any candidate of the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) in return for its support for Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the Presidential poll.

Iran offers talks without N-freeze
Tehran, July 5
Iran is ready to negotiate with world powers on its nuclear programme but without suspending its controversial uranium enrichment programme, a government spokesman said today. “Iran will not go back on its rights on the nuclear issue,” Gholamhossein Elham said, in the first comments from Tehran since it handed over a response yesterday to an international bid to end the nuclear standoff.

Admission to medical and dental colleges centralised
NRI seats kept out
Chandigarh, July 5
Punjab government today announced, admission to MBBS and other related courses against all seats, except NRI seats, in medical, dental and other colleges in Punjab will be made by centralised admission committee at the counselling to be held by it. It means, there will be no separate college level counselling for admission against management quota seats. Earlier, private colleges were authorised to hold counselling for admission against management quota seats.
