MDU suspends ex-CoE again
Suspension as per rules: Registrar On being questioned, MDU registrar S.P. Vats said a copy of the Vigilance Bureau inquiry report regarding the matter was recently sent to the university authorities by the higher education commissioner, Haryana, for comments and necessary
action. The MDU authorities took the matter to the EC, which, on the basis of the relevant university service and conduct rules, decided to place the said official under suspension. The university authorities also decided to chargesheet the official
Rohtak, July 5 The move may have been made in accordance with the laid down official procedure and norms, but it smacks of discriminatory approach on the part of the MDU authorities. The university administration had suspended the same official a few days ago on the grounds of wilful absence from duty. However, the official produced a copy of his leave application (bearing the diary number and the receiving official’s signatures) pertaining to the said "absence" period. Following this, the MDU authorities were left with no alternative but to revoke the suspension and reinstate the official. After the "failure" of the first move, the university authorities today suspended the deputy registrar once again, this time on the basis of the vigilance case against him. Interestingly, vigilance probes are going on against several MDU officials, but they have not been placed under suspension. A senior official of the MDU engineering wing had been suspended following a vigilance case against him, but was later reinstated by the university executive council even while the inquiry was on. Interestingly, this official was reinstated during the tenure of the present vice-chancellor and is doing his duty. There are several others who are on duty despite vigilance inquiries pending against them. Hence, the suspension of deputy registrar Sukhbir Singh first on the charge of wilful absence and shortly after on the basis of vigilance case does put a question mark on the uniformity in the functioning of the university administration, besides raising doubts over the "real" motive behind the move. |
Varsity adopts semester system
Rohtak, July 5 The EC also initiated disaffiliation proceedings against the Anupama Institute of Management and the Anupama College of Engineering, Bhora Kalan, Gurgaon. On the recommendation of the MDU academic council, the EC approved the adoption of the semester system of teaching and examination with provision for 20 per cent internal assessment at 22 teaching departments of the university. To ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the teaching departments following the implementation of the semester system, limited autonomy was proposed for the departments and their heads. Nineteen teaching posts were also created in the departments of computer science, chemistry mass communication and journalism, bio-sciences, bio-chemistry and genetics. A significant decision taken at today’s meeting was to start new study programmes in different departments. These include five-year integrated honours master’s courses in commerce, economics, mathematics; five-year MBA and six-year Master of Visual Art (Painting) courses after 10+2. Besides, amendments were made to the ordinances of various courses for the removal of anomalies therein. Another important decision was the bifurcation of the department of bio-chemistry and genetics and the trifurcation of the department of bio-sciences into the departments of botany, zoology and environmental sciences. Besides, the meeting also decided to set up a new department of microbiology. The EC was apprised of the agreement between the MDU and HCL Infosystems Ltd for installation of campus-wide integrated Internet and telephony system. The renewal of the agreement between MDU and the NBCC, which is constructing five buildings on the university campus, was also undertaken. New rules of house allotment committee were passed by the EC, which also implemented a set of rules against sexual exploitation as per the directions of the apex court. |
INLD in fix over SP’s support to Cong
Chandigarh, July 5 The SP’s decision to lend a “helping hand” to the Congress and support the Indo-US nuclear deal has landed INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala in a fix. Since the SP is the “mainstay” of the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) of which the INLD is also an “active” member, the party unit is now anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s meeting among the members of the UNPA. The big question before the INLD is whether or not to support the SP’s stance on the nuclear deal. Since the INLD’s main fight in Haryana has been and continues to be with the Congress party, insiders maintained that any kind of admission of support to the Congress was absolutely out of question. “Our party has opposed the Congress and its policies since the time Chaudhary Devi Lal was at the helm of affairs. Though the name of our party has changed over the years, we have stuck to our stand. At this juncture and in our position, we cannot accept the Congress at any cost,” a senior leader said. Though INLD’s extending support to the nuclear deal does not mean much since it has no MPs, it could, however, mean that the former may have to weigh its options just like another UNPA member, Telegu Desam Party’s N. Chandra Babu Naidu, who is also on a similar wicket in Andhra Pradesh. He, however, is learnt to have met leaders of the Left soon after the SP began deliberating its support for the Congress, indicating a weakening of the UNPA. INLD party leaders maintained that the SP’s decision to back the Congress would be the decision of the individual party and not that of the UNPA members. In such a situation, the UNPA would still remain intact and opposed to the policies and ideologies of the Congress and the BJP. However, if the INLD does decide to stick to its stand despite SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav hopeful of its other UNPA members supporting the deal, it remains to be seen the course such a stance will earn for the party. |
