Pathankot, January 8
Six members of a family from Mohali were killed in an accident on the Pathankot-Mukerian road, near Mirthal today. Sources said the family was coming back after paying obeisance at the Vashino Devi shrine. In the early hours today the Maruti 800 in which they were travelling collided head on with a truck. While five occupants of the car were killed on the spot, a girl was rescued from the damaged vehicle by the villagers and taken to the Pathankot Civil Hospital. However, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Those killed in the accident are Dr Surinder Singh, his wife Sunita, son Naveen Kumar, daughter-in-law Chanchala and daughters Punam and Kavita.
The driver of the truck managed to flee with the vehicle. The locals alleged that the vehicle with which the accident took place was an Army truck. Though the Maruti car was reduced to wreck, not much damage was caused to the truck. The driver of the truck fled with the vehicle taking advantage of the dark leaving victims in the car, the villagers alleged.
People from the surrounding areas gathered at the spot after hearing the sound of the
collision of the vehicles. However, before they could do anything all but one of the occupants of the car had died.
The bodies have been kept at the Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case and is looking for the missing truck. Police sources said that information was being gathered from the Army cantonments in the areas surrounding Pathankot to check their vehicles, which had plied on the Pathankot-Mukerian road in the early hours today. The possibility of the accident with some other truck was not being ruled out, they
said.
