Sheikh Abdullah hailed as beacon of communal amity
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, December 4
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, paid rich tributes to the late Sher-i-Kashmir, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, on his birth anniversary falling tomorrow and said Jammu and Kashmir was fortunate to have had such a towering leader.

Mr Azad said the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was known through out the world as an honest, dedicated and secular personality who always worked for the welfare of the masses.

He described the late leader as a great son of the soil, who worked with eminent figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and other national and international leaders.

Mr Azad said late Abdullah was a visionary with a dream envisaging peace and progress for the people of the state.

“Time has come when every body should work to realise Sheikh Saheb’s cherished dream” he added.

Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah appeared on the political scene of the state when the people of Jammu and Kashmir were living under feudal and monarchical rule, he said.

Sheikh Abdullah led a democratic movement against feudalism and launched a struggle against monarchy. Sheikh Saheb succeeded in both aims through non-violence, he said.

The Chief Minister said Sheikh Saheb’s famous slogan of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh Itehaad chanted by him alongwith millions of Kashmiris, still held good and was a beacon light for all those who believed in mutual brotherhood, unity and secular concept.

It was under his leadership that people of the state rose against fundamentalism and when the entire sub-continent was on fire as a result of communal frenzy, Mahatma Gandhi saw a ray of light in Kashmir where Muslims came forward to protect their Hindu brethren.

The philosophy advocated by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah during his life time, for which he also made sacrifices, was philosophy of communal amity, humanism and dignity of humans.

Mr Azad said history bore testimony to the fact that most of the national leaders of the time, who were contemporaries of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, had established personal relationship with him and held him in high esteem.

The late Mrs Indira Gandhi, who herself became victim of fundamentalism, had always appreciated Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah for his true secularism and his sincere desire to make Jammu and Kashmir one of the ideal and progressive states of the country.

The Chief Minster said the late leader, whether in government or outside, always worked for the betterment of all the sections of the society.

Meanwhile, the Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, sought involvement of the people of this trouble-torn state in the dialogue process to resolve Kashmir issue.

He said the stand taken by various top leaders, including the Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf, over the resolution of Kashmir issue was on the lines of the National Conference.

Dr Farooq Abdullah was speaking on the occasion of a blood donation camp held at the party headquarters here today.

The National Conference had organised a number of programmes on the birth centenary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah that falls tomorrow.

Floral tributes would be paid at the mazar of the Sheikh at Naseem Bagh near Hazratbal tomorrow which would be followed by a public meeting.

Senior party leaders, including the patron and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, and the National Conference president, Omar Abdullah, would be attending the meeting.
