Shimla shivers at 2.5°C

Shimla, December 4
Shimla shivered under a severe cold wave today as it recorded the season’s coldest night so far at 2.5 degree Celsius even as the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti received light snowfall last night.

Shimla recorded this season’s lowest temperature of 2.5 degree Celsius last night which was two to three degrees below normal.

However, the maximum temperature recorded in the town was 17.2 degree Celsius, which was four to five degrees above normal.

Tourists and locals are enjoying the ice-skating that had already begun at the Shimla ice-skating rink since late last month.

Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Pangi and other high altitude areas continued to reel under severe cold wave conditions, while temperatures in the mid hills hovered around the freezing point.

The 13,050-feet high Rohtang Pass, which is normally closed for vehicular traffic in the first week of November, received another spell of light snowfall last night.

The Pass, which is also called the gateway to the district, was still open for vehicular traffic, while the Kunzum Pass linking Lahaul with Spiti was closed.

The twin tribal valleys of Lahual and Spiti and Pangi in Chamba district were experiencing severe cold with temperatures between minus eight to minus 15 degree Celsius.

The meteorological office predicted snowfall in higher reaches and light to moderate showers at many places in the state in the next 24 hours. — UNI
