SYL canal: Haryana Cong MPs meet PM Chandigarh, June 8 Dr Manmohan Singh reportedly assured the MPs that he would take an appropriate decision for the implementation of the apex court’s verdict after consultation with all parties concerned as well as the Union Ministers for Law and Water Resources. He also reportedly assured his party MPs that no injustice would be done with Haryana The 15-minute meeting took place in Parliament House. The delegation comprised the former Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly and MP from Rohtak, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Ms Selja and Rao Inderjit Singh, both Union Ministers of State; Mr Kuldeep
Bishnoi (Bhiwani), Dr Arvind sharma (Karnal), Mr Atma Singh Gill (Sirsa), Mr Avtar
Bhadana (Faridabad), Mr Navin Jindal (Kurukshetra) and Mr Jai Prakash Barwala (Hisar). Mr Bishnoi had announced yesterday that the MPs had sought an appointment with the Prime Minister and the AICC President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to press Haryana’s case. The MPs received a call for the meeting with the Prime Minister this morning. Speaking for the delegation, Mr Hooda informed the Prime Minister that the construction of the SYL canal had been extra-ordinarily delayed primarily because of the attitude of the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, and his father, Mr Devi Lal, in opposing the Rajiv-Longowal accord, under which a provision was made for the canal. He told Dr Manmohan Singh that due to the non-completion of the canal, Haryana was unable to draw its share of water in the Punjab rivers. As a result of this, farmers of the state were unable to irrigate their fields and had to suffer economic loss because of low agricultural production. Mr Bishnoi said that Dr Manmohan Singh was sympathetic towards the demand of the Haryana MPs. Mr Hooda said the MPs would also meet the Union Minister for Water Resources, Mr Priya Ranjan Dass Munshi, and the Union Law Minister, Mr H.R. Bhardwaj, soon to advocate Haryana’s case. |

Cong
leader seeks HPSC dissolution Chandigarh, June 8 While the BJP recently urged the Governor to order a high-level probe in to all recruitments made under the Chautala regime, Mr Ajay Singh Yadav, the officiating leader of the Congress Legislature Party, today demanded immediate dissolution of the Haryana Public Service Commission as well as the Staff Selection Commission and transfer their functions to an impartial body headed by the Chief Justice of India. “The Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has recently announced that the government will fill 50,000 vacancies more in the state before completion of its tenure in February next. In view of the government’s track record, how can one expect that these jobs will go to meritorious candidates ?”, Mr Yadav asked. These vacancies apparently include the 102 posts announced by the HPSC for recruitment in the HCS and other state services. Such a huge number of vacancies announced by the HPSC is a sequel to the government move to increase the HCS cadre strength from 240 to 300. There is no corresponding move to increase the IAS cadre strength of 212. The government has also apparently given away the system of keeping aside at least 10 posts of SDO for directly recruited IAS officers. While the CM’s political adversaries are insisting for merit-based recruitments in the posts of HCS officers, DSPs, Excise and Taxation Officers, etc, announced by the HPSC, the IAS officers have their own reason to feel uncomfortable about the drive by the HPSC to recruit state service officers in large scale. The directly recruited IAS officers fear that with the induction of more officers recruited through the HPSC, a lion’s share of the postings will go to the latter. |
Probe licensing violations by Reliance: panel Rohtak, June 8 In a statement issued here today the association circle secretary, Mr Arvind Pal Dahiya, said the violation put other operators like the BSNL at a great disadvantage. He said the Communications Ministry doled out favours to Reliance and even forced private operators to withdraw the case they had filed against the former. The government even decided to compensate these operators for withdrawing the case. Mr Dahiya said the 1999 decision to shift from fixed licence fee to revenue sharing also needed to be reconsidered. The decision cost the exchequer Rs 4,400 crore which was to be realised from private operators as committed licence fee. The association leader said the participation of the private sector in the rural sector was non-existent. So far not a single telephone connection had been given by these operators in this sector. This was a violation of the New Telecom Policy, 1994, which stipulated that the private operators provide 20 per cent services in the rural sector. As against this the government has been pushing the BSNL to provide services in villages. |
