BJP submits memo to Governor
Seeks dismissal of Chautala government
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 6
The Haryana BJP today turned the heat on its erstwhile ally the INLD, and demanded immediate dismissal of the Om Prakash Chautala-led state government.

In a memorandum submitted to the Haryana Governor, Babu Parmanand, here today, the BJP took up the issue of recent CBI raids on a number of places in the state in connection with the JBT teachers recruitment scam. It claimed that the facts of the case which had come to light so far clearly indicated that top state government functionaries were involved in the scam.

The memorandum said the state government had also recruited people against thousands of other positions. It was quite likely that extraneous considerations had played a role in the selection of candidates for these jobs too, the memorandum said. It urged the Governor that an impartial agency might be asked to look into all recruitments made during the INLD regime.

The memorandum took up the INLD’s rout in the recent Lok Sabha poll in the state, adding that not only all INLD candidates were defeated but the deposits of some of them were also forfeited. The LS elections outcome showed that the INLD had no moral right to rule the state and it should be immediately dismissed, the memorandum demanded.

It alleged that Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana, was trying to divide people of Haryana on caste lines. The CM’s outburst against Punjabis and trading castes was a pointer in this direction, stated the memorandum.

The Chautala Government’s acts such as the imposition of various taxes on people, retrenchment of employees and registering “false” cases against political opponents were also taken up.

A separate memorandum addressed to the President of India, which, too, was handed over to the Governor urged the President to intervene against the inclusion of six “tainted persons with criminal background” in the Congress-led Union Government.

The BJP delegation, which went to Raj Bhavan, included Mr Ganeshi Lal, president of the Haryana unit of the party, Mr I.D. Swami, a former union minister; Mr Krishan Pal Gurjar, leader of the BJP legislators in Haryana; Mr Krishan Singh Sangwan, Congress MP from Sonepat; Mr Rambilas Sharma, a former Education Minister of Haryana, among others.

Earlier in the day, BJP leaders participated in a state-level workers’ meeting at Agrasein Bhavan here. Most speakers, including Mr Krishan Singh Sangwan and Mr Rambilas Sharma, asserted the party would not enter into an alliance with any party for fighting the Assembly elections.

Mr Sangwan, said the BJP was, however, open to merger of smaller outfits into the party.

Mr Ganeshi Lal said if the BJP came to power in Haryana, all those employees who had been retrenched would be reinstated.

The meeting was also attended by Mr Ranjit Singh and Mr K.R. Punia who left the Congress and joined the BJP before the LS elections.

Change order that demeans women, says Brinda Karat
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, June 6
The All-India Democratic Women’s Association’s (AIDWA), general secretary Ms Brinda Karat today said that no political party that sidelined issues relating to poor and women could afford to remain in power for long. She said that the BJP-led NDA alliance had to loose power at the Centre because it neglected this vast section of the society in the implementation of its programmes and policies. Talking to mediapersons on the second and concluding day of the two-day 5th state-level convention of the AIDWA here today Ms. Karat said that women’s movements played major role in the exit of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from the Centre.

Ms Karat said that the new government at the Centre, the AIDWA has met the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) drafting committee, the Coordination Committee Chief Ms Sonia Gandhi and has also sought an appointment with Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh on issues concerning women. She said that the main concern of the AIDWA was that the government should place before the House the Bill regarding 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies. She said political leaders like Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav, who had been opposing this Bill, must realise that they were no more in opposition and if they had some opposition to the Bill they should spell out some alternative instead of opposing the Bill for the sake of opposition.

The two day convention of the Haryana unit of the AIDWA concluded today. Earlier, inaugurating the convention yesterday Brinda Karat called upon women to make a concerted effort to change the social order that provided the status of a second rate human being to women in the society.

Ms Shubha, a member of the central committee of the AIDWA, Ms Sumitra Chopra, president of the Rajisthan unit, Ms Jagmati Sangwan and Ms Manjit Rathi, president and secretary respectively of the Haryana unit of the AIDWA and Ms Jatinder Paul Kaur and Ms Anita Kranti, president and secretary respectively of the district unit of the AIDWA also spoke on this occasion. Sampat’s plea to Cong MPs on SYL canal
Tribune News Service

Hisar, June 6
Haryana Finance Minister Sampat Singh today appealed to Congress members of the Lok Sabha from Haryana to cooperate with the state government in getting the SYL Canal completed.

In an interview with The Tribune here he said the government would welcome their help on this issue irrespective of the differences in political ideology. So far as the SYL Canal issue was concerned, the INLD did not want to corner the glory of securing the apex court decision in its favour for political gains, so help from any quarters was welcome, he added.

“This canal is the lifeline of Haryana. The Indian National Lok Dal government believes this issue should not be politicised as it would cause further delay in completing the project. We, therefore, appeal to Congress MPs to extend us a helping hand. If they do so we are prepared to give them all credit for completion of this project,” he said.

Mr Sampat Singh said Congress MPs should meet Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and prevail upon him to honour the Supreme Court verdict and let work begin work on the project. They should also put pressure on the Congress high command and the Prime Minister to ensure that the Congress government in Punjab implemented the verdict, he said.

He dismissed Congress leader Shamsher Singh Surjewala’s statement that the late Mr Devi Lal and Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala kept silent on this issue whenever Mr Parkash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister of Punjab. He said it was Mr Devi Lal who as Haryana Chief Minister filed a suit in the court for completion of the project on April 30, 1979 when Mr Badal was heading an Akali government in Punjab.
