Choudhary turns down Hooda’s demand
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 2
The All-India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary in charge of party affairs in Haryana, Mr Jai Kishan Choudhary, has turned down the demand of the Leader of Opposition, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, for convening an immediate meeting of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) for discussing the reasons behind the party’s defeat in the Fatehabad Assembly byelection.

Addressing a Balmiki sammelan here last evening, Mr Choudhary said there was no need for introspection by the Congress because the party had contested the byelection very keenly.

Denying any infighting within the Haryana Congress, Mr Choudhary said all prominent leaders of the party and MLAs had participated in the public rally in Fatehabad on May 15.

Mr Choudhary alleged that the Congress was defeated because the ruling Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) captured booths and cast at least 10,000 bogus votes. He said he had submitted a written report to the AICC President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, about the Fatehabad election.

In another snub to the dissidents in the Haryana Congress, Mr Choudhary said he expressed ignorance about the proposed Kaithal rally to be organised by anti-Bhajan Lal leaders on June 7.

He said he was asked by Mrs Gandhi to visit all 90 Assembly constituencies of Haryana to identify prospective candidates. He would submit his report to Mrs Gandhi. He said he was starting his tour from the Kalka constituency of which Panchkula was a part.

Mr Choudhary said the Congress had always fought for the Dalits, who, in turn, had been the backbone of the party. He criticised the INLD for its anti-Dalit policies and its failure to provide protection to the Dalits at Dulina and Harsola villages.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were Mr Chander Mohan, Kalka MLA; Mr Raj Kumar Balmiki, acting President of the Haryana Balmiki Sabha; Mr Pawan Valecha, General Secretary of the Haryana Youth Congress; and Mr Ramesh Kaushik, Mr Raj Kumar Saini and Mr Barjinder Kadian, all former ministers.

Haryana BJP to focus on Lok Sabha poll
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 2
Mr Ganeshi Lal who has been recently elevated as acting President of the Haryana BJP, today indicated that he would primarily focus on preparing the party for the next year’s Lok Sabha poll.

Talking to the TNS over phone from his residence at Sirsa, he said he would work towards enhancing the party’s support base in the state. He said that a ‘working group’ of 33 senior members of the party had been constituted for pursuing this objective. Its members with the help of workers, will try to enroll as many members of the party in the state as possible.

He said that he had already toured some of the districts of the state to take stock of the party’s position in these districts. He would be soon going to the remaining districts, Mr Ganeshi Lal said.

Though Mr Rattan Lal Kataria has not been formally stripped of the post of the president of the party in Haryana, most of Mr Kataria’s responsibilities have been passed over to him, Mr Ganeshi Lal said. According to him, Mr Kataria wanted to be relieved of the party president’s responsibility as he was an MP and needed to concentrate on his constituency.

On whether he would formally take over as the President of the party in Haryana when the organisational elections of the party would be held in September, Mr Ganeshi Lal said it would be decided by the electors.

Sukhna Nadi in need of proper bridge
H. S. Jaggi

Kalka, June 2
Residents here and of the adjoining villages have for the past more than four years, been demanding the construction of a bridge over ‘Sukhna Nadi’ falling between Rambagh and Tipra villages, but to no avail.

However, the administration, some time ago, laid a temporary road along the ‘nadi’ by carpeting it with earth, resulting in the stoppage of water.

Though the ‘nadi’ often remains dry, but during monsoon the flow of water becomes heavy creating a flood-like situation. It becomes impossible to cross it. During rainy season villages located across Sukhna Nadi are virtually cut off from the town. People fear that during the rainy season even this temporary path laid by the administration would be washed away by the heavy current of water. Some time ago causeways were constructed in the ‘Nadi’, but they were washed away during monsoon. The causeways were, however, again constructed but they did not long last, and they again met with the same fate.

A number of villages are located across the ‘nadi’, which include Tipra, Bitna, Kanguwal, Ramsar, Bheron ki Sair, which are directly connected with this town. Since almost all office such as, the main post office, electricity office, telephone office, tehsil, SMD’s office and the railway station are located in the town, consequently the residents of these areas have to frequently cross this ‘nadi’ for their day-to-day routine works in the town. In the absence of a bridge over the ‘nadi’, all these villages remain cut off from the town during rainy season, posing inconvenience to the residents, especially the daily-wage earners and employees.
