Medical education is no longer cheap. For many, who have been aspiring to become doctors, there is bad news. Some medical colleges in the state have hiked the fee to a level that will force many bright students from middle class families to abandon their pursuit towards a career in medicine.

‘Stop commercialisation of medical education’

The medical community, aspiring doctors and the parents have demanded immediate withdrawal of hike in the fee on medical education by some of the private institutions. They have appealed to the Central government to immediately intervene in this matter to stop the commercialisation of medical education for the benefit of meritorious students.

Panchayat poll: LBP to contest 8,000 seats
Ludhiana, June 2
The Lok Bhalai Party (LBP) will contest 8, 000 seats of sarpanches and panches all over the state during the panchayat poll to provide a third front based on ideology, said party chief and MP Balwant Singh Ramoowalia. He was in the city to preside over a workers conclave yesterday.

Labourers protest hike in royalty
Ludhiana, June 2
Members of the Lal Jhanda Mazdoor Union, working with sand miners, today sat on a dharna to protest against the hike in royalty of sand by the contractors outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The labourers were accompanied by their families.

Contractual workers’ sack decried
Machhiwara, June 2
The Local Bodies Department has come under criticism for terminating services of six sweepers, two octroi clerks and one plumber, who have been working on a contract basis at Nagar Panchayat here for the past eight years.

The proposal of following ‘‘no-satchel’’ scheme put forth by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for children of kindergarten and primary classes has failed to click in city schools.

DBA functioning in thick of controversy
Ludhiana, June 2
The functioning of the District Bar Association has come under a cloud following differences between the president and joint secretary. Mr Kapoor has condemned the role of the president for allegedly raising issues at DBA meetings not concerned with the Bar. He said that Mr Dhanda is president of the DBA and not president of the Bhartiya Vidya Mandir school managing committee.

Eight drug addicts cured
Ludhiana, June 2
Eight drug addicts who had been admitted to Aas Kiran, a de-addiction centre, more than two weeks ago for treatment, have left the centre after being cured. They remained under the supervision of the project director of Aas Kiran.

PCMS for rational transfer policy
Ludhiana, June 2
The Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) Association has demanded a rational transfer policy for doctors, conducive to the needs of the Health Department. It said, undue harassment of specialist doctors should be stopped.

The stage is set for the 54th Junior National Basketball Championship (boys and girls) which will be organised by the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) here at the Guru Nanak Sports Complex from June 7 to 14.
