Fatehabad poll: CM defends police
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 25
The Haryana Chief Minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, claimed today that the party’s victory in the Fatehabad byelection clearly indicated that the INLD would win the next assembly elections.

Mr Chautala, who was addressing his party’s office-bearers and workers here, told them to work with additional zeal to win the next elections with a massive margin. The people of Fatehabad had not only shown Mr Bhajan Lal, the Haryana Congress President; and the Haryana Vikas Party President, Mr Bansi Lal, who were projecting themselves as the future Chief Ministers, their true places, but also given a befitting reply to the attempts being made by the “so-called” Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) to vitiate the state’s peaceful atmosphere.

He claimed the INLD vote share in Fatehabad had been increasing since 1991.

Defending the police, Mr Chautala criticised the manner in which “certain political persons”, who had remained at high posts, had tried to take law into their hands and also behaved in a “shameful” manner with the police on the polling day.

Mr Chautala said his government’s “Sarkar Aapke Dwar” programme was being appreciated at the international level. With an eye on the people’s aspirations for jobs, Mr Chautala said government jobs could not be given to everyone. Still the government had been trying to provide maximum employment opportunities. Apart from recruiting 8,000 constables for the state police, constables for the Railway Police would also be recruited. About 7,000 youths would be appointed as “Gram Vikas Purush” to act as a link between the government and villagers.

Mr Chautala said another proposal to appoint “raksha purush” in each village was under consideration. The “raksha purush” would act like a chowkidar of the village and maintain a record of births and deaths and also of those coming to the village from outside. A total of about 25,000 youths would be provided employment. He asked the party workers to publicise the policies and programmes of the INLD to make the opposition’s disinformation campaign ineffective.

Land racket unearthed: 5 officials booked
Our Correspondent

Sirsa, May 25
A racket of illegal allotment of a piece of land worth Rs 1 crore has been unearthed by the SDM, Sirsa. He has directed the police to register a case against a naib tehsildar, a kanungo and three patwaris for taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to allot the land to eight persons.

According to information, the conspiracy to allot 25 acres of the land near Kasankhera village in the district was hatched by five officials of the Revenue Department. The land which was to be allotted to the landless families at a concessional price on instalments was allotted to the accused. After the exposure of the conspiracy, the police has questioned the patwari of the village and the patwari of the SDM looking after the surplus land. The naib tehsildar and two others are absconding.

Sources say there is a provision to allot surplus land of a village to landless people of that village and neighbouring village. According to the provision, there is a stipulated procedure of allotment, including making public announcements in that area to invite applications.

The applications are scrutinised by kanungo, the patwari and the naib tehsildar. The accused distributed the land after preparing fake documents. The sources said when the matter was brought into the notice of the SDM, Mr M.L. Kaushik, by the sarpanch, he deputed the Tehsildar to probe into the matter. After receiving the report, he directed the SHO to register the case.

Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail applications of three officials have been rejected by a Sirsa court.
