Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 18
Mr Pratap Singh, younger brother of Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, today took up cudgels on behalf of his family and declared to file a defamation case against Mr Bhajan Lal.

Mr Pratap Singh alleged at a press conference here today that Mr Bhajan Lal, chief of the HPCC, had used a “foul language” against the Devi Lal clan while campaigning at Fatehabad. Mr Bhajan Lal, according to Mr Pratap Singh, had talked about alleged extra-marital relationships in Devi Lal’s family.

“My father had disowned Om Prakash Chautala when the latter was caught at Delhi airport with a large number of wristwatches brought from Japan. Devi Lalji was at the PGIMS, Chandigarh when the news reached him and despite illness he hurriedly called a press conference and disowned Om Prakash”, Mr Pratap Singh said. Citing this incident, Mr Pratap Singh said only a father could disown his son.

Mr Bhajan Lal, according to Mr Pratap Singh, did not spare the three remaining sons of Devi Lal, including Jagdish, the youngest son, who is no more. Regarding Mr Pratap Singh, Mr Bhajan Lal had reportedly said that Devi Lal did not treat him as his son. Mr Pratap Singh said ironically when he had joined the Congress, his being a son of Devi Lal became a handicap for him. Mr Ranjit Singh, Devi Lal’s third son who is now with the Congress, and late Jagdish had also enjoyed their after affection, Mr Pratap Singh said.

He said he had video as well as audio tapes of Mr Bhajan Lal’s abusive speeches which would be presented in court as evidence. The speeches were also reported in the eveningers published from Fatehabad, Pratap Singh claimed, adding that he had already consulted lawyers in this connection.

Pratap Singh said he had also spoken to his brother, Mr Ranjit Singh, about the issue. “Ranjit Singh was initially campaigning for the Congress candidate round-the-clock but he withdrew quietly from the campaign after Mr Bhajan Lal started casting aspersions on our family”, Mr Pratap Singh claimed.

On why Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala had not joined issue with Mr Bhajan Lal on the speeches Mr Pratap Singh said Mr Chautala was insensitive to such allegations. “He and Mr Bhajan Lal may also be having a secret understanding”, Mr Pratap Singh alleged.

Karnal, May 18
The police here did not find Dr Parveen Togadia, International Secretary of the Vishawa Hindu Parishad (VHP), guilty of attacking two Congress workers and injuring them during a visit here on March 14. The police has rejected Congress leaders’ demand of registering a case against Dr Togadia under Sections 323, 324 of the IPC.

Two Congress workers, Gopal Krishan and Naresh, had alleged that on March 14 Dr Togadia came to Karnal to address a meeting in old Sabzi Mandi and some VHP workers had attacked them allegedly at the instance of Mr Togadia. Both were admitted to the Karnal Civil Hospital. The meeting was organised by the VHP.

The police had registered the complaint of the two Congress workers. Mr Rajesh Kumar, Station House Officer, investigated the complaint. The report of the SHO says that the “charges levelled by Congress workers against Dr Togadia have been found to be baseless and without truth”. The report, however, says that the Congress workers did receive injuries and were attacked by “some other elements”. The SHO has recommended that a case under Sections 323/324 be registered against unknown persons and investigations started. The SHO submitted his report to the District Police Chief on Dr Togadia on May 13.
