Suraj Bhan “open to joining active politics” Ambala, May 11 Talking to The Tribune, Dr Suraj Bhan observed that after having served as the Governor, it would be desirable to pursue non-controversial aspects. “There are a host of issues which I would like to pursue. The issues include farmers concerns, the SC/ BC issue and education,” he said. Dr Suraj Bhan, who has been the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and has held the dual charge of Bihar, said he would accept any responsibility which is given to him by the party high command. “The party will decide for me,” he said. He has been an MP from Ambala four times. “I have never changed my constituency and also I have never changed my party,” he stated. Dr Suraj Bhan pointed out that whether he was in active politics or not, a major issue which he felt could significantly improve the plight of the economically weaker sections was of wasteland distribution. “According to the Wasteland India Atlas 2000, there is 45 crore acres of wasteland in the country. But, about 10 crore acres is not wasteland but wasted land. There is land along the railway lines, national and state highways and also degraded forests. The land which can be put to use is about 20 crore acres,” he said. He stated that if the waste land was distributed, it would benefit about 4 crore families. “About 20-22 crore people will benefit from the exercise. Today, land has become a symbol of status and there is unemployment among the uneducated. Land is a state subject but when an effort can be made to link the rivers, then definitely a coordinated effort can be made towards distributing the waste land,” he said. Dr Suraj Bhan stated that in his opinion, the issue of land distribution was more important than that of reservation. “I believe that economic parameters should be adopted for distributing the wasted land. This will benefit the society on the whole and it will be non-controversial,” he said. He opined that education was also an important issue which needed to be paid close attention. “It has been observed that teachers of government schools send their children to public schools. It would eventually become that the only the poor children are going to government schools. I feel that the quality of education imparted in the government schools should be improved,” he said. Dr Suraj Bhan said that he had a good tenure as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. “Himachal Pradesh is a peaceful state and the people are peace-loving,” he stated. |
