Ten cops among 22 hurt in Pehowa clash Kurukshetra, May 17 Some of the injured policemen, including the Pehowa SHO Piara Singh
Nagra, were injured and have been admitted to the Kurukshetra civil hospital, it said. The police has registered cases against the demonstrators under various sections of the
IPC. No arrest has been made so far in the clash which took place yesterday. Haryana Youth Congress president Satwinder Singh Timmy has condemned the police action on the demonstrators of the Pehowa town, who were protesting against the alleged deteriorating law and order situation in the subdivision and had given a call for a
bandh. Mr Timmy said the demonstrators were holding a peaceful march till a relative of a ruling party leader had an altercation with the demonstrators at the main chowk of the city where the traffic was jammed due to the procession. The policemen resorted to a lathi charge to get the vehicular traffic moving and it was here that the demonstrators
went berserk and pelted stones on them. Two young boys, namely Sumit (6) and one and a half years old Abhishek of Ajrani village under the Pehowa subdivision were brutally murdered. There were some other incidents of loot and extortion also which had shaken the faith of people in the police. Various organisations of the city had given a call for the bandh which went off peacefully till the altercation between the relative of a ruling party leader and the demonstrators at the main chowk of the city. A DSP was not allowed to move out of a shop where he had taken shelter and was rescued by the police force which arrived from Kurukshetra under the DSP headquarters, Mr Anil Dhawan.

Rewari action at CM’s behest: Yadav Chandigarh, May 17 Narrating the sequence of events, Mr Yadav said at a press conference that the municipal committee of Rewari passed a resolution in April to
install a statue of his father, late Rao Abhey Singh near their residence. Subsequently, Mr Yadav met the Governor, Babu Parmanand, and requested him to unveil the statue at Rewari. The Governor agreed to the request and a letter was sent by the Raj Bhawan to the DC of Rewari to find out whether it would be proper on the part of the Governor to attend the function. Mr Yadav, who was accompanied by Congress functionary Rajender Singh, said that the DC informed the state government about the Raj Bhawan’s letter which set off a series of incidents aimed at jeopardising the ceremony. He said on May 9 the municipal committee sent people to the site to demolish a platform which was being erected for setting up the statue. They, however, faced resistance from the local people and returned without accomplishing their task. Then on May 11 around 400 policemen, led by SDM, Mahavir Kaushik, DSP, Om Prakash and SHO Eeswar Singh, surrounded his house and assaulted five people, including Mr Yadav’s gunmen and his brother in the presence of Mr Yadav. The cops also razed the platform on which the statue was to be erected, to the ground. At 1-30 a.m. on May 12, the police again came accompanied by labourers and removed the debris from the spot. Mr Yadav said that when he asked the SDM regarding the police action, he replied that chairman of the municipal committee had sought help from the district administration for razing the platform. The Congress leader added that though the municipal committee passed a resolution in April for setting up Rao Abhey Singh’s statue, that resolution was forgotten and the committee, acting under pressure from the government, adopted another resolution in May which stated that Rao Abhey Singh’s statue would be installed only after obtaining permission from the state government. Mr Yadav said that the organisation had now decided to
install a statue on the premises of a school at Sahranwas village on May 27. He said that he and Rajender Singh met the Governor at Raj Bhawan yesterday and requested him to take part in the function on May 27 and the Governor accepted the invitation. Asked whether the Governor himself felt humiliated as a result of the incident at Rewari, Mr Yadav said that the Governor was worried. He said further that the street in front of his ancestral house was named after his father following Abhey Singh’s death last year and it was approved by the district administration. But the statue installation triggered off a police action because the Governor was to take part in the function. Mr Yadav said that the Governor had annoyed the Chief Minister by refusing to be Mr Chautala’s rubber stamp. He said after an attempt was made to demolish the platform on May 9, he tried to talk to the CM at Chandigarh from Rewari but Mr Om Prakash Chautala avoided attending the phone. He alleged that Mr Chautala also bore grudge against him because of the way he attacked the government during Assembly sessions. |
Paper leaked due to varsity laxity Karnal, May 17 The envelopes containing the M.Com (Final) paper were opened in the morning shift itself by the Superintendent of the centre at 8.30 am. It was subsequently found out that the paper was to be held in the evening. The leakage had also occurred at other centres of Kurukshetra University. But the university chose to cancel the paper in the University College Centre only. Inquiries made by this reporter show that the faux pas occurred because of a mistake by the office of the Controller of Examinations. Frantic phone calls were made to other centres from the Controller’s office that the M.Com (Final) paper was scheduled to be held in the evening. But by that time the damage had already been done. The centre superintendent of University College, Mr Antil, maintains that he had opened the envelope as per the instructions of the university. The controller’s office, on the other hand, says it had issued instructions to all Principals and centre superintendents intimating the shifting of the paper from he morning to the evening shift on May 15. Inquiries made by The Tribune further show that in the original date sheet issued by the university, the paper was to be held in the morning shift on May 15. The Deputy Registrar (Conduct) issued a letter No CT-II/03/21071-171 dated May 14 addressed to all Principals/ superintendents-in-chief intimating them about the corrections in the date sheet. At serial No 1, it was mentioned that “the subject of M.Com has been shown in the morning session, which may kindly be re-corrected in the evening session on the relevant days of the examinations.” Surprisingly, this letter was received in a large number of university centres on the evening of May 15 or on May 16 morning. One of the Principals admitted that he was handed over this letter by a personal messenger of the university in the wee hours of May 17 morning. He said he was saved the embarrassment of opening the question paper envelope as he had per chance contacted the controller’s office on May 15 morning before the examination started. The letter also mentioned that “paper-I for M.Phil (Master of philosophy) has been shown in the date of May 20 which may kindly be considered as May 22.” Some of the Principals demanded that the M.Com (Final) paper should be cancelled as after the leakage at the University College Centre, there was every possibility that the contents of the question paper might have been conveyed to candidates at other centres too. It has also come to light that the work of distribution of question papers to various centres is being taken up casually by the conduct branch. For instance, the question papers relating to the examinations to be held on May 17 were received by the Principals of the three colleges in Karnal well after midnight on May 16. The university staff knocked at the door of a Principal’s house after midnight to hand over the papers. While he did received the question papers, another Principal asked the staff to wait till 5 am in the morning of May 17. The examination starts at 8.30 am. The Principal is reported to have received the question papers only on intimated
time. |
