Tamil Nadu take lead against Delhi New Delhi, April 27 Tamil Nadu, who earlier in the day took a 71-run first innings lead, after dismissing hosts Delhi for 256, thus consolidated their position with an overall lead of 159 runs with six wickets in hand, at the end of the third day’s play. The match is now keenly poised as there are two more days’ play to go. Delhi will have to inflict some quick blows tomorrow morning, if they hope to make a match of it. Sadagopan Ramesh, who hit an impressive 82 in the first innings, was unbeaten on 20 (57b, 75m, 3x4) while S. Sarath was not out on five (24b, 29m) at the draw of stumps. A brief spell of rain, accompanied by hailstorm, hold up of play, fading light and extended play made it an eventful day of action at the Kotla ground. Eighty minutes’ play was lost due to the snap rain and hailstorm which lashed the ground suddenly, immediately on resumption of play after the lunch break. Though the rain lasted only a brief while, the covers could not be brought on quickly, and as a result, 80 minutes’ play was lost — from 1.15 pm to 2.35 pm. When play resumed, the sun played hide and seek, and it looked as if Delhi would not be able to complete their quota of 38 overs. But the umpires allowed the
play to carry on, and Delhi completed their quota of overs, but only after ten minutes past six pm. The sudden
fluctuation in the weather, which brought down the temperature to a pleasant level, was an ideal setting for the Tamil Nadu batsmen to revel in. But with Sadangopan Ramesh unable to open the innings, as he was not on the field when the Delhi innings folded up, Tamil Nadu set off with a handicap, and their cause took a beating when Vidut Sivaramakrishnan perished off the third ball of Amit Bhandari, in the very first over, with no run on the board. Next man in, S Sriram, too went back after a very brief stay at the wicket, with Tamil Nadu tottering at 2 for 35. Sivaramakrishnan was forced to edge one into the hands of keeper Vijay Dahiya, after tentatively fending off the first two balls, while Sriram spooned a catch to Rahul Sanghvi at square leg off Sanjay Gill. He made 16 off 38 balls with two fours, after a 48-minute vigil. But Tamil Nadu suffered two debilitating blows when star batsman Hemang Badani and captain S. Suresh fell in the space of 29 runs. Badani went on his backfoot to tackle a cleverly disguised delivery from Virender Sehwag, only to be trapped in front of the wicket. He made five off 28 balls in 35 minutes’ of batting. Sehwag was brought into the attack when the light was failing and Delhi persisted with the medium-pacers. The Tamil Nadu batsmen appealed against the light, but when Sehwag was introduced from the far end, the game carried on. Suresh was going steady, and was digging his feet deep, when Delhi captain Vijay Dahiya introduced medium pacer N.S. Negi from the far end. Negi, who had played a stellar knock in the morning, gave a torrid time to Suresh with the first three balls of the 31st over, and then produced a deadly one, which kicked up to take an edge of Suresh’s bat and landed in the gloved hands of Vijay Dahiya. Four wickets down for 72 runs, Tamil Nadu looked in serious trouble, but Sadagopan Ramesh and S. Sarath played with circumspection, to see through the rest of the seven overs to enable the visitors hold the upper hand. The Delhi bowlers tried to put pressure on the Tamil Nadu batsmen as they repeatedly appealed for lbw, particularly when spinner Sarandeep was operating. Sarandeep got the ball to turn a bit, and succeeded in creating some confusion among the batsmen. He had the longest bowl — 11 overs — out of which eight were maiden, and conceded only four runs. The loss of quick wickets made Ramesh and Sarath extra cautious, and they played the waiting game, instead of taking unwanted risks. In the morning, Delhi, who resumed at 127 for four, with Mithun Manhas unbeaten on 20 and Vijay Dahiya on 19, could add only 129 more runs, that too due to the 62-run last-wicket partnership between N S Negi and Amit Bhandari. Negi cracked a vital 44 runs with two fours off 135 balls while Amit Bhandari, who hit three fours and one six, remained unconquered on 32. He hit the only six of the match when he hoisted spinner Dhandapani over the mid-off fence.

Mumbai beat Baroda by innings Vadodara, April 27 Baroda’s second innings lasted barely 127 minutes, with the team losing nine wickets for 106 runs off 43.2 overs to be all out on 122. Mumbai’s Sairaj Bahutule bowled a fine spell, bagging five wickets for a mere 21 runs. Mumbai, who have entered the final after a gap of three years, will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Tamil Nadu and Delhi. Baroda, who were bowled out for 130 in their first innings, conceded a 260-run lead to Mumbai who had scored 390. Resuming at overnight score of 16 for loss of captain Connor Williams (6), Baroda lost three wickets in quick succession to be reduced to 40 for four in no time. Overnight batsmen Satyajit Parab and Rakesh T Solanki lasted only five overs when play resumed this morning. Avishkar Salvi broke the partnership when he clean bowled Parab at 36. That opened the floodgates as Baroda failed to withstand the fine bowling of Bahutule, Agarkar and Powar and the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rakesh Solanki and Ajit Bhoite showed some determination and added 50 runs for the fifth wicket. Speedster Zaheer Khan delighted the home crowd by hitting two sixes. However, Baroda innings did not last long and match was over after lunch. Jayawardene steers Lanka to safety Colombo, April 27 The stylish right-hander, who scored a mere 20 runs in 10 matches at cricket’s showpiece in South Africa last month, hit an unbeaten 58 as the hosts replied strongly to New Zealand’s 515-7 declared.
Sri Lanka survived an uncertain period soon after lunch to close the third day’s play at 267-4 in their first innings, still 248 runs behind with six wickets in hand. New captain Hashan Tillakaratne made 71 not out in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 133 with Jayawardene after New Zealand had grabbed two crucial wickets in the post-lunch session. Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, who put on 103 for the third wicket before lunch, were separated in the space of 20 runs soon after resumption. Sri Lanka slipped from their lunch score of 114-2 to 134-4, but defiant batting from Jayawardene and Tillakaratne ensured against a middle-order collapse. The pair saw off the second new ball claimed under darkening skies before rain halted play 11.5 overs early. A watchful Jayawardena has so far hit eight boundaries against his captain’s 13. “We always knew it was a matter of time before Mahela would be back among the runs,” said Tillakaratne. “Had he not been there at the other end, it could have spelt trouble for us. I am happy that I have got runs too, but we still have a lot of work ahead in this match.” Scoreboard New Zealand (1st innings): 515-7 declared. Adams hastens Bangladesh collapse Chittagong, April 27 Bangladesh were left 60 runs short of making South Africa bat again as the left-arm spinner took 5 for 69 to help bowl out Bangladesh for 237 at the M.A. Aziz Stadium. It was the third five-wicket effort for Adams, who had taken 5 for 37 in the first innings. “It has been a great Test for me,” said Adams. “Going into the match I knew it would be a good game for me and as it turned out, I could extract both turn and bounce from the wicket.” Adams today took the wickets of former captain Akram Khan, Mashrafe bin Murtaza and Enamul Haque as Bangladesh, overnight 185 for 5, folded up just 55 minutes into the day. Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud conceded it was another disappointing performance from his side. “We could not make a match of it despite some good knocks from batsmen Habibul Bashar and Javed Omar,” said Mahmud, who led his side for the first time in Tests. Bashar (75) and Omar (71) were in a 131-run stand for the second wicket yesterday, the highest partnership for Bangladesh for any wicket. “But we were outplayed by a much better side. Jacques Rudolph’s innings in particular was a great one,” said Mahmud. Left-hander Rudolph (222 not out) got a rare double-century on debut and was declared man of the match. Serena Williams, Venus give USA 2-0 lead Lowell, April 27 World number three Venus overwhelmed Daja Bedanova 6-1, 6-0 yesterday before top-ranked Serena fought off a set point in the first set before steam rolling Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-1. “It has been great to be on a team as Americans and all competing together and not playing against each other,” Serena said. “It really brings us together.” Playing her first match since losing the final of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston to Justine Henin-Hardenne two weeks ago, Serena played a sloppy first set against lefty Benesova, who confused her with slice serves and rolling forehands. After Serena was broken to 4-4 when she committed one in a series of unforced backhand errors, the 21-year-old threw her racket to the ground in disgust. Benesova held for 5-4 and then had a set point on Williams’ serve but Serena cracked a service winner out wide. Williams then broke Benesova to 6-5 when the Czech made a backhand error. Williams needed four set points to close out the first set and won it when she whacked another service winner. “I was going for too much,” Serena said. “I think I should have just took some pace off the ball and tried to move her around, which I’ve been doing the past year and a half, as opposed to just blasting every ball.” Serena, who has won the last four grand slams, found her rhythm in the second set, breaking Benesova in the first game and rolling over her behind a huge first serve and bullet returns. “I’ve played against some guys and her serve is almost the same,” Benesova said.” Williams won the match when Benesova double-faulted. “I had to go into another gear,” Serena said. “I didn’t feel like going three sets today.”

Andre Agassi takes No 1 ranking Houston, April 27 Agassi’s victory last night gave him enough points to surpass Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and regain the top spot for the first time since Sept 10, 2000, when Agassi was replaced by Pete Sampras. “It feels amazing, I feel I’ve forgotten what it’s like,” said Agassi, who will be 33 on Tuesday. “There were a lot of nerves here tonight.” Agassi replaced Jimmy Connors as the oldest player to old the top ranking. Connors held the No 1 spot at 30 years, 10 months in 1983. Agassi also became the fifth player over 30 to hold the top rank. “I don’t think I could quite find the words,” Agassi said. “It’s the result of a lot of hard work and decision making, a lot of success in many different arenas against many different opponents. “It’s a bit overwhelming to have it come together at ne moment.” Agassi will play two-time champion Andy Roddick in finals today. Roddick rallied to a 4-6 6-1 6-2 victory over Olivier Mutis of France in the earlier semifinal and improved his record at Westside Tennis Club to 16-0. Asked if he had an eye on the Grand Slam this year, Agassi said: “I only have eyes for Andy.” Agassi breezed through his first three matches in less than an hour, but needed 1 hour, 5 minutes to beat Melzer, who went three hard sets late Friday night in reaching the semifinals.

Safin crushes Ferrero Barcelona, April 27 Safin, seeded fourth, will face another Spaniard in the final after Carlos Moya beat Argentina’s Agustin Calleri 7-6, 6-2. Moya’s victory was impressive enough but was overshadowed by Safin’s outstanding performance against Ferrero, who had reached the semifinals without dropping a set. Safin, who beat Ferrero in the Barcelona Open final three years ago, edged ahead in the first set at 5-4, leaving the Spaniard to serve to stay in contention. Ferrero, under pressure at 30-30, put a tired looking volley into the net and then double faulted to give his opponent the set in 35 minutes. What followed was simply brutal, as Safin tore Ferrero’s game to shreds. The Russian held his opening service game in the second set to love and moved 2-0 ahead with a backhand return winner on break point in the next. Safin then reeled off three love games to move 5-0 up and was only denied a 6-0 set win as Ferrero saved match point with an ace.

Mohammedan Sporting hold Haywards New Delhi, April 27 With today’s draw, Haywards are almost certain of getting through to the premier division next year while Sporting put themselves into a spot of bother. They now have to win their next encounter against State Bank of Travancore or atleast a draw to stay in the hunt. Much to the chagrin of the substantial Sunday crowd here, Sporting played defensive soccer, with their foreign recruits Eugene Gray and Awal Ibrahim failing to create an impact. Sporting coach Mohd Habib chose to rest Akbar Singh and play Khen Thang Paite in the starting line up probably to offset the fast Goan strikers Dudu Omagbemi and Amaechi Tochokwu. But his move did not pay off and he had to bring in Akbar in the first half itself. Though his forwards created some good moves, they could not score.
