Captial’s six unsafe high-rises to be sealed today

Close on the heels of the landmark verdict in the Uphaar case, six high-rise buildings in the national Capital, including Super Bazar in Connaught Place, will be sealed on Monday for their “failure” to adopt the safety norms issued by the Delhi Fire Service.

Penury drives family of six, including 4 kids, to suicide
Ghaziabad, April 27
Financial hardship drove a family of six to suicide in C Block, Indira Nagar Extension, Loni, on Saturday night. The head of the family, Mahender (35), poisoned his wife Madhu (32) and his four children — Monica (10), Ruchi, (8), Aradhna (6) and Vishal (4) .

Indiscriminate use of insecticides by farmers worries experts
Sonepat, April 27
The injudicious use of insecticides on vegetables and excessive application of fertilizers on wheat and paddy crops by the farmers is causing concern among the agriculture scientists, who fear that this was an open invitation to disease.

An elephant, in a sudden burst of frenzy, veered out of control and held up traffic on National Highway no 58 for more than 16 hours. The frenzied elephant was finally put in fetters at noon.

BJP to ‘go it alone’ in assembly poll

The BJP would go it alone in the assembly poll due in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi this year. BJP Organising Secretary Ram Piare Pandey said here last evening the BJP had decided to go it alone in the assembly poll in the four states in what is going to be the last and crucial trial of strength between the BJP and the Congress before the next Lok Sabha elections.

Man sent to jail for illegal detention of girl
Noida, April 27
A relative of a young girl, who had been illegally detained, has been arrested and sent to jail by the Sector 58 police, under Section 343/504 and 506 of the IPC. Asha Verma, SI in the Noida Control Room, is a resident of Sector 58. Pooja, the 20-year-old daughter of her brother-in-law, also lives with her in the quarter.

The members of the Haryana Ophthalmic Assistants Association are up in arms against the ‘unjustified’ reduction in their pay scale. The association has resolved to participate in the ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation slated for May 7 and 8.

Woman disappears
Sonepat, April 27

Mystery shrouds the disappearance of a woman since April 17. She left her house for Faridabad but failed to reach there. She was wearing gold ornaments worth Rs 15,000 and had Rs 10,000 cash with her.

Platinum jubilee celebration of Free Church

The year-long festivities organised to mark the platinum jubilee of the Free Church, Sansad Marg, came to an end here today. The combined multilingual service, lead by Reverend Karam Masih, was attended by a large congregation.

Woman gang raped, police on lookout for culprits
Sonepat, April 27
The police have launched a hunt for three persons, including one Virasat Khan, who were allegedly involved in a gang rape case. According to a report, the woman along with her husband was involved in a ‘committee business’. Virasat Khan, the accused, is a contractor and had deposited Rs 2 lakh with the committee.

Doctor among 2 held for faking driving licences
New Delhi, April 27
With the arrest of two persons, including a BAMS doctor, the North East district police today claimed to have busted a gang of cheats, who were involved in preparing fake driving licences. Three fake driving licenses and some equipments were seized from their possession.

An all-round performance by Pankaj Thakur (36 and 3 for 15) and a debonair half century by Akash Malhotra enabled Food Corporation of India defeat Air Sahara by 65 runs and entered the final of the 13th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Khalsa College ground on Sunday. FCI will take on ONGC in the final on April 30.

Shivam, Mohnish help Gyan Bharti win
New Delhi, April 27
Shivam Gupta cracked a strokeful half century and Mohnish Kumar, in a fiery spell, claimed three wickets for 11 runs to help Gyan Bharti South Delhi Academy beat R P Academy by two wickets and entered the semi-final of the second Rajdhani Cup Cricket Tournament at the Najafgarh Sports Club ground.

Delhi recorded a thumping 10-0 victory against Chandigarh in their opening match of the Under-21 National Football League Championship (North Zone qualifying round) for the M Dutta Roy Trophy at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, according to the Delhi Soccer Association.

Rajdhani beat Shalimar Club

A half century by Ravi Yadav and an all-round performance by Sanjay Verma (3 for 35 and 36) helped Rajdhani Sports beat Shalimar Club by one wicket and entered the quarter-final of the fourth Abhay Ram Gymkhana Cricket Tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Ravi Yadav was declared the man of the match.
