asks people to change govt in Rajasthan Chandigarh, April 27 Mr Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana, was addressing a kisan sammelan at Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan. As all major changes in the country had been initiated in Rajasthan, the forthcoming assembly elections in the state, therefore, would provide an opportunity to the people to change the political scene by giving a massive mandate to the INLD. Mr Chautala regretted that even after 56 years of freedom, not even once a "son of a farmer" had become the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, expressing the hope that now the farming community would not be misled by those who had vested interests. He will address similar sammelans at Kishangarh (April 30) and Sikkar (May 11.) A number of Congress and BJP leaders, like Mrs Raj Kumar and Mr Om Prakash Sharma joined the INLD on the occasion. |
Avtar Singh confesses to being BTFK militant
Karnal, April 27 According to Haryana Police sources, Avtar Singh had also revealed during the interrogation that he joined hands with several Punjab militants to avenge the anti Sikh riots in 1984. Avtar Singh, in three-day police remand here along with three others arrested from north-west Delhi yesterday, has spent eight years in jail under TADA act where he came in contact with these smuggling weapons. As he was out of jail, taking advantage of his links with criminals, he indulged in the smuggling of automatic weapons of Pakistan and China make, Avtar Singh revealed during interrogation, the sources said. The other three, brought to Karnal yesterday, had been identified as Lucky Khanna, Muhammad Akil and Avtar’s second wife Sonia. Avtar Singh is reported to have also confessed that his second wife Sonia, whom he married on September 23, 2002, was a accomplice in all crimes he had committed. He also revealed that his accomplice Muhammad Akil had links with Muslim terrorist outfits and another accomplice Lucky Khanna extorted money for a gang in Delhi. Meanwhile, it is learnt that a intelligence agencies, team is coming to Karnal to interrogate these persons. UNI |
Sonia blamed for delay in
SYL canal construction Ambala, April 27 He said the Punjab Government had been delaying the construction of the SYL for its political interests. He said the Chief Minister, Punjab, belonged to the Congress and Mrs Gandhi could direct him to complete the construction of the canal. He said when Mr Devi Lal was the Chief Minister of Haryana and there was a coalition government at the Centre, the matter could be settled easily at that time but no efforts were made in this regard. Mr Beniwal said his party had been opposing the launching of casinos in the state. He announced that when the casinos would be started in the state, 25 party workers along with a few female activists would immolate themselves to protest against it. |

BJP to stage dharna
outside MC office Ambala, April 27 This was disclosed by the newly appointed coordinator of the BJP Joint Action Committee and former Deputy Speaker, Mr Faqirchand Aggarwal, while talking to mediapersons. Nealy 100 party workers would stage the dharna from 9 am to 1 pm daily and try to make the people aware of the undemocratic means being adopted by the Haryana government towards BJP leaders in the state. Mr Aggarwal pointed out that the issue of four shops, which allegedly led to the dismissal of Mr Dass had come up before the general House of the council and the rates of the shops were approved by the House. Hence, it was not fair to take action against Mr Dass. The BJP workers feel cheated by the government. Later, Mr Aggarwal said the party high command had been informed about the strategy and the state unit had given the green light in this regard. |
VC calls upon youth to develop skills Yamunanagar, April 27 He said that conflict of interests between advanced countries and the developing countries had accentuated the need for developing nations to evolve innovative skills and strategies to protect their interests. Dr Chawala stated that technology was being used as powerful tool to gain competitive advantage. The Vice-Chancellor said that the problems the younger generation had to face include not only the environmental pollution, global warming ozone depletion, etc. but also intolerance resulting in social tension, terrorism and threat of war involving atomic, chemical and biological weapons. He said that we can only hope that the great modern civilisation survived. Nearly 525 students were awarded degrees in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce and Sports Science. at the function. He lauded Mr Bhupinder Singh Jauhar, Chairman, Governing Body, Khalsa Institutions for his role in industries and education. 9 coop mills stop cane crushing Yamunanagar, April 27 However, three sugar mills in the private sector, the Asia’s biggest Saraswati Sugar Mills, here, Picidaly Sugar Mill, Bhadson, Karnal district, and the Nariangarh Sugar Mill, are in operation. These mills have not made payments for the past two days. More than Rs 200 crore of the farmers balance was pending with the government. Mr V.K. Sachdeva, Executive Director, Saraswati Sugar Mills, said the payment of farmers had been stopped four days back as they could not despatch their sugar because of the truckers’ strike. The payment would be made from May 4 till the end of season. |
Swami held on rape charge Ambala, April 27 According to available information, Kalyani Maharaj, who runs two ashrams, one in Karnal on the Kaithal road and the other in Ambala Cantonment, was booked for the alleged rape of an ashram inmate, who hailed from Shahpur village. The victim had in her complaint lodged with the police in February stated that Kalyani Maharaj had been raping her for the past one year and threatening to kill her if she told anybody about it. She, then ran away from the ashram but the police did not register any FIR. She later approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who upon her personal appearance in the court, issued a notice to the police to register an FIR in the case. Following this, Swami Kalyani Maharaj was booked under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC and the medical examination of the victim was also done at Ambala cantonment. The swami, who had been absconding, filed an anticipatory bail application in the Sessions Court here and also sought that his arrest be stayed but the same was dismissed. The police teams were sent to various places to arrest him. Police sources disclosed that he was arrested today on the basis of information provided by a police informer. The swami had earlier been booked in another rape case of a woman from Pingli village in Karnal. But following the intervention of the panchayat, he got out of the case by paying the woman Rs 5 lakh. The swami, who owns 20 acres of ancestral land, is married and has two sons. While the elder son is a BAMS doctor and provides treatment to the ashram inmates, the younger one is preparing for medical entrance test. His wife resides in the village. |

Army jawan cremated Karnal, April 27 Sanjeev Kumar was found dead on the Indian side of the LoC in the Baramula sector of Jammu and Kashmir on April 24. According to Army sources, there were speculations that the jawan might have committee suicide. But Sanjeev’s father, Mr Mohan Lal said the first telephonic information he had received from Baramula was that Sanjeev had died fighting terrorists who were trying to cross into India.

Fire destroys crops Ambala, April 27 While initially the villagers tried to control the fire themselves, later two fire tenders joined them. According to sources, fire is yet to be completely extinguished in some areas. The villagers here maintain that fire in the fields was caused by sparks from electricity supply lines passing over the area. Some farmers of Muzzafra village, who were working in the fields at that time, disclosed that strong winds led to short-circuiting in the wires near Kaula Minor and the sparks fell on the stubble which led to the fire. The fire, which began in Ahman village, spread to Muzaffra village, within an hour. The other villages affected are

Steps to face SARS threat Ambala, April 27 The Deputy Commissioner, Mr DD Gautam, said all necessary steps had been taken to keep suspected patients in isolation in the civil hospitals at Ambala Cantt and Ambala City. He said as a precautionary measure a special ward had been created. He said a control room had been set up in the office of the Civil Surgeon to monitor the feedback in this regard from all sub centres, primary health centres and community health centres. In addition to it, a team of senior doctors had been constituted to diagnose the suspected patients. |

Woman killed in mishap
Ambala, April 27 According to information, a constable who was recently transferred to Ambala had come to Markanda temple along with his wife, Sushma, and two other relatives. When he was going back to Yamunanagar, his car overturned. Sushma succumbed to her injuries while the constable and two other persons sustained injuries. Later, the injured was admitted to a private hospital at Yamunanagar.
