LUCKNOW, Jan 11 — UP Government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the self-immolation by a Sikh youth yesterday and sent the SHO of the local Krishna Nagar police station to the lines, an official spokesman said today.

NEW DELHI, Jan 11 — Oil sector officers, who observed a nationwide indefinite strike causing an estimated loss of Rs 500 crore, today called it off after the government assured favourable consideration of their wage-related demands.

BJP gives new twist to calendar row
LUDHIANA, Jan 11 — The controversy over the introduction of the Nanakshahi calendar by the SGPC shows no sign of abating. The latest twist has been given by BJP leader and Punjab Minister for Local Bodies Balramji Das Tandon who has warned that its adoption will lead to serious repercussions in terms of jeopardising the Hindu-Sikh brotherhood, giving setback to the unity and integrity of the country.

Rain breaks dry spell in region
CHANDIGARH, Jan 11 — Moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches and mild rains at isolated places in the mid-hills of Himachal Pradesh, and drizzle in parts of Punjab and Haryana during the past 24 hours broke the prolonged dry spell besides causing fall in ground temperatures.
