DPCC forms 24-member
poll panel
New Delhi, November 24 Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today approved various committees of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee for the elections, including Pradesh Election Committee, Manifesto Committee, Publicity Committee and Disciplinary Committee. The 24-member election committee includes the names of senior leaders like, Sheila Dikshit, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Haroon Yusuf, Ajay Maken, Pravesh Hashmi, Dr Janardhan Diwedi, Dr Karan Singh, Subhash Chopra, JP Aggarwal, Chaurdhary Prem Singh, Mukesh Sharma and Mahabal Mishra. Controversial figures and former Congress MPs Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar do not figure on any of the panels set up by the party. "Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the Pradesh Election Committee, Manifesto Committee, Publicity Committee and Disciplinary Committee for the Delhi Pradesh Congress for the ensuing assembly elections in Delhi," party general secretary in-charge of Organisation, Janardan Dwivedi, said in a statement here. Dikshit has been accommodated as a member of the Pradesh Election Committee (PEC) headed by Congress's Delhi unit chief, Arvinder Singh Lovely. Congress has set up a number of panels ahead of elections in Delhi, where it faces a difficult situation after having been virtually decimated in the 2013 assembly polls, when it managed to win just eight seats. AICC general secretary Ajay Maken, too, has been included in the 24-member PEC while the health minister in the erstwhile Dikshit government, AK Walia, has been made chairman of the Manifesto Committee. CLP leader Haroon Yusuf, who heads the 24-member Publicity Committee, also finds place on two other panels -- the Election Committee and Manifesto Committee. The party is yet to set up its campaign committee. A Disciplinary committee has also been set up headed by Abjit Singh Gulati. That the 76-year-old Dikshit, who had recently ruled out the possibility of her contesting elections this time, has been included only in the PEC is being seen as the party limiting her role this time. Dikshit, whose 15 years in office before she lost power make her the longest-serving Chief Minister Delhi has had, was trounced by Aam Aadmi Party's Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency in the elections last year. |
Two arrested for supply of party drugs in NCR
New Delhi, November 24 The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested Ramveer (39) and Amit Kumar (35), both are residents of Ghaziabad. The police said they seized 14 kilograms of pseudoephedrine worth Rs 70 lakh allegedly from the accused. On November 22, the Crime Branch was tipped off that Ramveer and his brother-in-law, Amit Kumar, are allegedly engaged in supplying pseudoephedrine in Ghaziabad and Delhi. The police were informed that the accused would come with a consignment of pseudoephedrine near a bus stand under the Geeta Colony flyover in east Delhi between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm on the same day. "At about 4:40 pm, a white Maruti SX4 bearing a Uttar Pradesh registration number plate arrived there from the Jamuna Bazar side. “The car driver was identified as Ramvir who started waiting near the bus stand. After about 10 minutes, a Mahindra XUV vehicle bearing a UP registration number plate also arrived there and its driver was identified as Amit Kumar. “The driver of Mahindra XUV got down with a bag and handed it over to Ramvir who checked the bag. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the two men proceeded to return but were apprehended by the police party," said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). Fourteen kilograms of micro-crystal pseudoephedrine was found in the bag, according to Yadav. "During their interrogation, the accused revealed that they had come near the Geeta Colony bus stand to deliver pseudoephedrine to one of their contacts but were caught. They said that they had come in contact with one Mayank Aggarwal and started purchasing the drug from him. Aggarwal and his wife were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau and a huge quantity of pseudoephedrine and other drugs were recovered from him," said Yadav. |
BJP seat-specific manifestoes on cards
New Delhi, November 24 General secretary Rekha Gupta interacted with the party leaders on the prominent issues which include regularisation of unauthorised colonies, return of e-rickshaws on roads and giving relief to consumers in water and power bills, the sources said. "It was an informal interaction to gauge the area-specific demands of local leaders," said a former
legislator. Some councillors also wanted the party leadership to stall the proposed hike in municipal taxes in the budgets of the three civic agencies ruled by the saffron party. Sources said the BJP is toying with the idea of releasing manifestoes on each constituency. "In some constituencies like Model Town, the party had released constituency-specific manifesto during the last elections. This experiment will be extended to other constituencies this time," said a BJP leader. Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay said the party is also likely to prepare a blueprint for revamping a number of government agencies. Upadhyay said the party's manifesto will also talk about bench marking of hospitals and schools under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, said Upadhyay. In another development, Upadhyay wrote a letter to Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and sought the Central government's help in lowering the conversion charges for shops. He said this will give relief to people who want to pay conversion charges for commercial use of private houses in the colonies which lack local commercial areas. The BJP also held booth-level meetings for Keshavpuram and Chandni Chowk districts. Parliamentarians Ramesh Bidhuri, Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma, Meenakshi Lekhi, Mahesh Girri, Vijay Goel and other senior members of the party participated in the exercise. |
Playschools told to admit 25% poor kids
New Delhi, November 24 A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw said if any school is found flouting this rule, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will initiate the process of cancellation of the lease. The court's direction came on a plea filed on behalf of NGO Justice for All by advocate Khagesh Jha, seeking directions of admitting 25 per cent of students from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category in aided and unaided schools that have been granted land at concessional rates. The bench slammed the government and the DDA for not devising any mechanism for ensuring compliance of the condition on the premise where land much below the market rate was allotted to schools. The Directorate of Education (DoE) of the Delhi government had washed off its hand from the responsibility of ensuring compliance by the schools. It had said that the issue of compliance was between the DDA as the agency which had allotted the land and the schools. And if the allottee of the land was in breach of any of the terms and conditions, it was for the DDA to take action. On the other hand, the DDA had informed the court that the government was the agency to check and monitor the activities of the educational institutions, and when the government has informed it about any violation of norms of admission of students from weaker sections, action for cancellation of allotment and determination of perpetual lease is taken. It was, however, said that no complaints were received from the government. "The aforesaid demonstrates a very unfortunate and sorry state of affairs," the court said on the conduct of the Delhi government and the DDA for not devising any mechanism for ensuring compliance of the condition of land given at concessional rates. "The people affected by such an attitude of the respondents (government and DDA) are most in need of education, and for providing which the scheme (allotment of land at concessional rates) was devised," the court said. It said people who were affected by the attitude of government and the DDA "have very little access to justice too".
