Chandigarh-Ambala NH-22 Bipin Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Dera Bassi, November 13 With the construction of this 1.14-km-long flyover, at a cost of Rs 90.90 crore, here, the major bottleneck in the smooth flow of the vehicular traffic on the highway will be removed in the next two years. This overbridge will be the fourth on the 40-km Chandigarh-Ambala Highway. The other three are at Zirakpur, Bhankharpur and Dappar villages. The proposed flyover at Dera Bassi will not only be helpful in bringing down the rate of accidents on the highway here but also provide uninterrupted journey to passengers heading towards Chandigarh apart from tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla and Manali. The project has been allotted to M/s Gawar Constructions Limited, a Hisar-based construction company, on the construction engineering procurement and construction (EPC) mode to complete the work in 24 months. Local MLA NK Sharma, who took up the case with the NHAI at the Punjab government level for public interest, said the flyover would provide a respite from frequent traffic jams and fatal accidents at Dera Bassi. Local traders apprehend that with the coming up of the flyover, their business would be adversely affected. The residents have welcomed the decision of the Punjab government. Ramneek Sehgal, executive director of the company, said ‘soil testing’, the first step of the project, had been completed. “The company has initiated steps to prepare the design of the flyover. It will be ready soon. After that the construction work will begin,” said Sehgal. He claimed that the company had set the target to complete the project before the stipulated time. Experts are of the opinion that the authorities should plan the flyover keeping in view the rapid growth in the number of vehicles and the population growth for the next 50 years. |
