Terming the judgment of the trial court in the sensational Jyoti murder case a "grave miscarriage of justice", the Haryana Government, in its appeal before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has raised 20 points, which were "not considered while delivering the judgment".

A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today held a Chandigarh Police Sub-Inspector, his wife and son guilty in a graft case registered in May 2011.

While the Mohali police are yet to identify the killer(s) of six-year-old Mehram Singh, his mother Harinder Kaur reiterated that she suspected the role of her estranged husband Varinderpal Singh in the crime. Soon after Mehram’s bhog ceremony concluded at a gurdwara in Phase IX this afternoon, Harinder Kaur demanded that her husband should be brought back from Australia. “Bring back Varinder, who is abroad,” said Harinder Kaur when asked whom she suspected behind the crime.

"Need to answer the call of nature? Hold on, we are on the way." This is the reply traffic policemen on duty will get when they call for the services of mobile toilets, being introduced by the Chandigarh Traffic Police. The fully equipped mobile toilets, to be stationed at the Sector 29 Traffic Lines, will rush to the spot.

Attacked by stray cattle, woman dies
Mohali, November 12
A 39-year-old woman lost her life after being attacked by stray cattle here last night. The incident occurred at around 8 pm on the road separating Sector 68 and Phase IX. The deceased, Satwinder Kaur, a resident of Phase IX, was on her way back home from Kharar after meeting a relative when stray cattle came in front of her Activa scooter all of a sudden.

Service tax keeps contractors off auction

The auction of 17 paid parking lots, organised by the municipal corporation, today turned out to be a flop show as contractors refused to participate. The contractors were opposing MC’s decision not to include 12.36 per cent service tax in the reserve price of the parking lots.

The authorities are struggling to allot the newly developed parking lot spread over an area of 1,200 square feet having a capacity for more than 700 cars to smoothen the parking for the commuters at the railway station.

The UT Administration is sitting over the file proposing reduction in penalty for misuse of buildings and violation of building bylaws from Rs 500 per sq feet per month to Rs 210 per sq feet per month.

The Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) today in-principle approved restoration of Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19. The decision comes in wake of a recent survey by the UT engineering wing that found the centre crying for maintenance.

Staff shortage at CHC adds to residents’ woes 
Zirakpur, November 12
The Community Health Centre (CH), Dhakoli, is unable to cater to a population of around 1.50 lakh residents due to staff shortage being faced by them. Though the Punjab Government has set up the government-run 30-bedded CHC in 2011, the health authorities have failed to recruit requisite staff against the sanctioned strength even after three years.

Kirron’s tweet on cut in VAT on diesel evokes mixed reaction

Local MP Kirron Kher’s recent Twitter post on reduction in diesel prices in Chandigarh evoked mixed reactions from her followers. Kirron Kher, in her post on the micro-blogging site on November 11, had said, “I am happy that I have been able to bring down the price of diesel in Chandigarh by Rs 2. Congrats to everyone.”

Panjab varsity to intensify cleanliness campaign

Panjab University has decided to intensify the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on the university campus. PU Registrar Col GS Chadha (retd) today chaired a meeting of the newly constituted standing committee for proper implementation of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ on the university campus. The meeting identified areas on the campus that need urgent attention in this regard.

The medical committee of MCM DAV College for Women organised a wellness programme in collaboration with dietician Shreya’s Family diet clinic to foster among students a better understanding of food and health in daily lives. House show
Boys of Br Morrissey House, St John’s High School, Chandigarh, presented a house show on “Divinity in God’s creation” on Wednesday. Reverend brothers and parents were present on the occasion. The show began with the vandana recitation, followed by an English play, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” in which the value of honesty was exhibited. The show was made interesting with the humorous Hindi play, “Free Style Gawahi”. The show ended with a message of being united and living in peace and harmony through a Kashmiri dance.

Scuffle between accused, rape victim at court complex

High drama was witnessed at the District Court Complex in Sector 43 today when a rape victim and the accused allegedly entered into an altercation. The victim alleged that the accused slapped her and misbehaved with her.

Vehicle thefts reported 
Chandigarh, November 12
Four cases of vehicle thefts were reported in the city. Vishal Kataria, a resident of Sector 15, Chandigarh, reported that someone had stolen his vehicle from in front of his residence. A case has been registered.

Youth thrashed

High drama was witnessed at Sector 15 when two girls were eve-teased and their male counterparts were attacked by a group of youths. Sources stated that Nitish Negi, a resident of Sector 19, had come to Apni Mandi with his two female friends to purchase vegetables.

A Sector 27 resident was allegedly stabbed and robbed of his mobile phone by three unidentified youths in Sector 28 on late Wednesday evening.
